Abstract

An oscillating power tool includes a housing, a motor, a tool holder driven oscillatingly, a flange threadedly coupled to a plunger, and a lever pivotable between a clamping position and a release position. The flange is configured to be movable in an axial direction. The flange is configured to clamp the output element onto the tool holder in the clamping position and configured to be displaced a first distance from the tool holder in the release position. The lever includes a cam surface including a substantially flat surface configured to engage the plunger in the release position. In the release position, a gap is disposed between the lever and the housing to allow the lever to be rotated past the release position. The lever is configured to displace the flange a second distance from the tool holder, larger than the first distance, when rotated past the release position.

Claims (42)

1 . An oscillating power tool comprising:

a housing;

a motor disposed within the housing;

a tool holder driven about an output axis by the motor, the tool holder having a holder locating feature projecting therefrom and a tapered groove defined therein; and

an adapter having

a first adapter face,

a second adapter face generally opposite the first adapter face,

an aperture extending through the first adapter face and the second adapter face, the aperture configured to receive the holder locating feature,

a first adapter locating feature projecting from the first adapter face and selectively locatable in the tapered groove of the tool holder, and

a second adapter locating feature projecting from the second adapter face and selectively locatable in the tapered groove of the tool holder.

2 . The oscillating power tool of claim 1 , wherein the holder locating feature is tapered.

3 . The oscillating power tool of claim 2 , wherein the first adapter locating feature is tapered.

4 . The oscillating power tool of claim 3 , wherein the second adapter locating feature includes a radially extending arm that is tapered.

5 . The oscillating power tool of claim 2 , wherein the aperture is a slot extending radially inward from an outer edge of the adapter.

6 . The oscillating power tool of claim 1 , wherein a gap is defined between an outer surface of the tool holder and the first adapter face as the first adapter locating feature is located in the tapered groove of the tool holder.

7 . The oscillating power tool of claim 6 , wherein the gap is defined between the outer surface of the tool holder and the second adapter face as the second adapter locating feature is located in the tapered groove of the tool holder.

8 . The oscillating power tool of claim 1 , wherein the holder locating feature has a base and a base width, and wherein the aperture has a width corresponding to the base width such that the base width of the holder locating feature is greater than the width of the aperture.

9 . An oscillating power tool comprising:

a housing;

a motor disposed within the housing, the motor having a motor shaft;

an elastomeric member surrounding a portion of the motor and engaging a portion of the housing; and

a drive mechanism driven by the motor, the drive mechanism configured to convert rotational motion of the motor shaft into oscillating motion of an output element for engaging a workpiece,

wherein the elastomeric member engages an inwardly protruding rib of the housing.

10 . The oscillating power tool of claim 9 , wherein the elastomeric member is a rubber band.

11 . The oscillating power tool of claim 9 , further comprising a gear case supported by the housing, and wherein the drive mechanism is positioned within the gear case.

12 . The oscillating power tool of claim 11 , further comprising a motor mount assembly connecting the motor to the housing, wherein the motor mount assembly is further connected to the gear case.

13 . The oscillating power tool of claim 12 , wherein the motor mount assembly includes a motor plate having a central opening and a motor plate bearing positioned within the central opening and surrounds the motor shaft, the motor plate bearing engages the gear case to axially align the motor with the gear case.

14 . The oscillating power tool of claim 9 , wherein the motor has a proximal end and a distal end opposite the proximal end, and wherein the elastomeric member is closer to the distal end than to the proximal end.

15 . An oscillating power tool comprising:

a housing;

a motor disposed within the housing;

a spindle driven oscillatingly by the motor about an output axis, the spindle configured to operably couple to an output element for engaging a workpiece with the output element;

a clamping mechanism configured to operably couple the output element to the spindle, the clamping mechanism including

an upper shoulder disposed within the spindle,

a lower shoulder disposed within the spindle,

a plunger at least partially disposed within the spindle such that the plunger rests against the upper shoulder, the plunger displaceable in a direction away from the upper shoulder, and

a spring disposed between the lower shoulder and the plunger, the spring biasing the plunger toward the upper shoulder; and

a lever pivotable between a clamping position, in which the lever is disengaged from the plunger, and a release position, in which the lever displaces the plunger away from the upper shoulder.

16 . The oscillating power tool of claim 15 , wherein the upper shoulder is formed on an inner surface of the spindle and the lower shoulder is formed on an intermediate member coupled to the spindle.

17 . The oscillating power tool of claim 15 , further comprising a gear case supported by the housing, and wherein the spindle is coupled to the gear case by way of a first bearing and a second bearing to allow the spindle to oscillate with respect to the gear case.

18 . The oscillating power tool of claim 15 , wherein the plunger has a flange that rests against the upper shoulder such that the spring is disposed between the flange of the plunger and the lower shoulder.

19 . The oscillating power tool of claim 15 , wherein the clamping mechanism further includes a tool holder configured to be driven oscillatingly about the output axis and a clamp shaft having a flange configured to transfer a clamping force from the spring to urge the output element towards the tool holder.
