Abstract

A coating composition includes a coating resin, a triazine ultraviolet light absorber of Formula (I), and a hindered light amine stabilizer, where Formula (I) has the structure:

Claims (29)

1 . A coating composition comprising:

a coating resin; and

two or more triazine ultraviolet light absorbers of Formula (I);

wherein:

Formula (I) has the structure:

R 1 is a substituted C 1 -C 18 alkyl or C 3 -C 18 branched chain alkyl and wherein the substituent is OH or OC(O)R 5 , and

R 5 is a C 9 branched chain alkyl;

each R 3 is independently H,

the two or more triazine ultraviolet light absorbers are covalently linked to the coating resin through R 1, wherein the covalent link is between the coating resin and the one or more OH, or —OC(O)R 5 of R 1 ; wherein the coating resin is covalently linked to the R 1 group of Formula (I) wherein the covalent linkage is selected from the group consisting of —OC(O)NH—, and —OC(O)NR 5 —; wherein the triazine ultraviolet light absorber of Formula (I) is present from about 0.1 wt. % to about 25 wt. % on a total solids basis; and the coating resin is present in the coating composition from 30 to 90 percent by weight based on the solids content.

2 . A multi coat paint system comprising:

a. one or more primer layer,

b. one or more pigmented coating layer disposed thereon, and

c. one or more coating layers comprising the coating composition of claim 1 .

The coating composition of claim 1 , wherein the coating resin is selected from the group consisting of a thermoset acrylic melamine resin, an acrylic urethane resin, an acrylic resin with carbamate pendant groups crosslinked with melamine, and an acrylic polyol resin crosslinked with melamine containing carbamate groups.

4 . A coating composition comprising:

a coating resin; and

triazine ultraviolet light absorbers comprising a mixture of

or a mixture of

wherein neoC 9 H 19 is C 9 branched chain alkyl;

wherein the triazine ultraviolet light absorbers are present from about 0.1 wt. % to about 25 wt. % on a total solids basis; and the coating resin is present in the coating composition from 3 0 to 90 percent by weight based on the solids content.

The coating composition of claim 1 further comprising another ultraviolet light absorber selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole, a hydroxyphenyl-s-triazine, a benzophenone, an ester of a benzoic acid, an acrylate, a malonate, an oxamide, and a mixture of any two or more thereof.

6 . A method of stabilizing a coating composition on a substrate toward ultraviolet radiation, the method comprising applying the coating composition of claim 1 to the substrate.

7 . The transparent coating layer of claim 1 , wherein the triazine ultraviolet light absorber is selected from the group consisting of:

wherein neoC 9 H 19 is C 9 branched chain alkyl.

8 . A multi coat paint system comprising:

a. one or more primer layer,

b. one or more pigmented coating layer disposed thereon, and

c. one or more coating compositions according to claim 4 .

9 . The coating composition of claim 1 wherein the coating composition is UV curable.
