Abstract

A portable information handling system includes a battery having a pattern that aids in detection of battery swell, such as by capture of a visual image of the battery and pattern with a camera for comparison against a threshold of the pattern distortion that indicates excessive battery swell. For instance, the pattern is parallel lines of a strain gauge that detects strain introduced by battery swell. Distortion of the parallel lines by expansion of the battery due to swelling is detected by changes in distance between the parallel lines and confirmed with distances measured between the camera and the pattern by an infrared depth camera.

Claims (43)

1 . A system for evaluating information handling system battery swell, the system comprising:

a camera operable to capture visual images in a field of view;

a test station configured to accept an information handling system aligned with the field of view; and

a processor interfaced with the camera and the test station, the processor operable to accept the visual images from the camera; and

a non-transitory memory interfaced with the processor and storing instructions that when executed on the processor cause:

capture of visual images of a battery of the information handling system with the camera; and

analysis of the battery in the visual images to detect a battery swell of a predetermined amount, the battery having a pattern with an undistorted initial state visible at an outer surface, the visual images depicting the pattern with distortions introduced by the battery swell;

wherein the pattern has plural parallel visible lines visible at an outer surface that distort to have a predetermined distortion at the predetermined amount.

2 . The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a depth camera operable to detect distances to an upper surface of the battery;

instructions that when executed on the processor cause comparison of distances to the battery upper surface to detect the battery swell of the predetermined amount.

3 . The system of claim 2 wherein the depth camera comprises an infrared camera operable to capture three dimensional visual images of the battery.

4 . The system of claim 1 further comprising the instructions that when executed on the processor cause a comparison of distance between the parallel lines in the visual image to detect the predetermined amount.

5 . The system of claim 1 wherein the battery pattern of plural parallel lines comprise a resistive conductor having first and second leads, the resistive conductor having an increase in resistance from strain when the battery swells.

6 . The system of claim 5 further comprising instructions that when executed on the processor cause retrieval from the information handling system of strain measured by the battery pattern during use of the information handling system.

7 . The system of claim 1 further comprising the pattern of plural lines visible at an outer surface of the battery, the plural lines having a curved appearance when the battery swell is less than the predetermined amount, a parallel appearance when the battery swell is the predetermined amount, and a curved appearance when the battery swell is greater than the predetermined amount.

8 . The system of claim 1 wherein the battery comprises plural cells and each cell has the pattern.

9 . A method for evaluating information handling system battery swell, the method comprising:

coupling a pattern to a battery, the pattern having an undistorted initial state;

capturing visual images of the pattern with a camera;

analyzing the pattern to determine swelling of the battery by detecting distortions of the pattern compared to the undistorted initial state;

coupling as the pattern a set of plural parallel lines;

detecting battery swell when the plural parallel lines distort to have a curved relationship with each other; and

comparing a distance between each of the parallel lines due to the distortion to detect an amount of battery swell.

10 . The method of claim 9 further comprising:

capturing the visual images with a depth camera that determines distances to plural points on the battery from the camera; and

confirming the battery swell with the distances.

11 . The method of claim 9 wherein the depth camera comprises an infrared camera operable to capture three dimensional visual images of the battery.

12 . The method of claim 9 wherein the battery pattern of plural parallel lines comprise a resistive conductor having first and second leads, the resistive conductor having an increase in resistance from strain when the battery swells.

13 . The method of claim 12 further comprising:

detecting a predetermined resistance to current passing through the resistive conductor; and

in response to the predetermined resistance, determining a battery swell event.

14 . The method of claim 9 further comprising:

coupling as the pattern a set of plural curved lines; and

detecting battery swell when the plural curved lines distort to have a parallel relationship with each other.

15 . The method of claim 13 wherein the battery comprises plural cells and each cell has the pattern.

16 . The method of claim 15 further comprising highlighting distortion of the plural lines with colors coupled to the battery.

17 . A method for evaluating information handling system battery swell, the method comprising:

coupling a pattern to a battery, the pattern having an undistorted initial state;

capturing visual images of the pattern with a camera;

analyzing the pattern to determine swelling of the battery by detecting distortions of the pattern compared to the undistorted initial state;

coupling as the pattern a set of plural curved lines; and

detecting battery swell when the plural curved lines distort to have a parallel relationship with each other.
