Abstract

A military vehicle includes a battery structure. The battery structure includes walls and battery cells positioned within the walls. The battery structure is coupled with the military vehicle and includes a partition. The partition divides the battery structure into a first inner volume and a second inner volume. The plurality of battery cells are positioned within the first inner volume. The battery structure also includes at least one of a fluid, a crushable structure, or a compressible material positioned within the second inner volume. During an impact event, the fluid, the crushable structure, or the compressible material are configured to absorb kinetic energy transferred from the battery cells to the at least one of the fluid, the crushable structure, or the compressible material due to a mass of the plurality of battery cells.

Claims (18)

1 . A military vehicle comprising:

a battery structure comprising a plurality of walls and a plurality of battery cells positioned within the plurality of walls, the battery structure coupled with the military vehicle and comprising:

a partition configured to divide the battery structure into a first inner volume and a second inner volume, wherein the plurality of battery cells are positioned within the first inner volume;

a fluid, a crushable structure, and a compressible material positioned within the second inner volume, wherein the fluid, the crushable structure, and the compressible material form layers within the second inner volume and are configured to absorb kinetic energy transferred from the plurality of battery cells to the at least one of the fluid, the crushable structure, or the compressible material due to a mass of the plurality of battery cells, in response to an impact event.

2 . The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises a non-Newtonian fluid and the second inner volume is a sealed inner volume such that the fluid is limited from flowing out of the second inner volume into the first inner volume.

3 . The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the crushable structure comprises a plurality of layers that are configured to undergo plastic deformation during the impact event to absorb the kinetic energy of the plurality of battery cells.

4 . The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the compressible material is a crushable foam that is configured to undergo plastic deformation during the impact event to absorb the kinetic energy of the plurality of battery cells.

5 . The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the fluid, the crushable structure, and the compressible material are configured to absorb the kinetic energy transferred from the plurality of battery cells when the military vehicle lands on a surface after being dropped out of an aircraft.

6 . The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are configured to provide electrical energy for transporting the military vehicle.

7 . A military vehicle comprising:

a battery structure configured to store a plurality of battery cells, the battery structure configured to provide protection for the plurality of battery cells during a low velocity aerial delivery of the military vehicle, the battery structure comprising:

a partition upon which the plurality of battery cells rest;

a layer of crushable structure positioned beneath the partition, the crushable structure configured to crush as the military vehicle contacts a ground surface and the plurality of battery cells are decelerated, the crushable structure crushed by the plurality of battery cells;

a layer of compressible material, the compressible material configured to compress to absorb kinetic energy from the plurality of battery cells when the military vehicle contacts the ground surface; and

a fluid positioned beneath the layer of the crushable structure and the layer of compressible material, the fluid being a non-Newtonian fluid configured to absorb impact of the plurality of battery cells when the military vehicle contacts the ground surface.

8 . The military vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the battery structure further comprises:

a plurality of layers of the crushable structure positioned beneath the partition, wherein a number of the plurality of layers is configured based on a weight of the plurality of battery cells so that the plurality of layers of the crushable structure can provide sufficient energy absorption from the plurality of battery cells when the military vehicle contacts the ground surface.

9 . The military vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the battery structure is configured to facilitate the low velocity aerial delivery of the military vehicle without damage to the plurality of battery cells when the military vehicle contacts the ground surface.
