Abstract

A power transmitter for wireless power transfer includes a control and communications unit configured to provide power control signals to a power supply external to the power transmitter for controlling a power level of a power signal configured for transmission to a power receiver, the power supply configured to configure a direct current (DC) power based on the power control signals. The power transmitter further includes an inverter circuit configured to receive the DC power from the power supply external to the power transmitter and convert the input power to a power signal. The power transmitter further includes a coil formed of wound Litz wire and including at least one layer, the coil defining, at least, a top face and shielding comprising a ferrite core and defining a cavity, the cavity configured such that the ferrite core substantially surrounds all but the top face of the coil.

Claims (55)

1 . A power transmitter for wireless power transfer, the power transmitter comprising:

an inverter configured to:

(i) receive direct current (DC) power from a power supply external to the power transmitter, and

(ii) convert the received DC power to an alternating current (AC) power signal;

a coil configured to transmit the AC power signal to a power receiver; and

a power transmitter controller configured to:

(i) provide, to the power supply external to the power transmitter, power control signals useable by the power supply for controlling the DC power supplied to the inverter, and

(ii) generate a pulse width modulation signal for configuring an AC frequency for the AC power signal, the pulse width modulation signal modified by a duty cycle alteration, the duty cycle alteration configured to shift a root mean square voltage of the AC power signal from an initial root mean square voltage to a shifted root mean square voltage, wherein the shifted root mean square voltage is less than the initial root mean square voltage, wherein the power supply is configured to configure the DC power based on the power control signals, and wherein the power supply comprises a voltage regulator and a power supply controller, wherein the power supply controller is configured to: (i) receive the power control signals, (ii) generate, based on the power control signals, voltage regulation instructions for altering a DC voltage of the DC power, and (iii) provide the voltage regulation instructions to the voltage regulator to control the DC voltage of the DC power, wherein the voltage regulation instructions include voltage step up instructions or voltage step down instructions for the voltage regulator, the voltage step up instructions or voltage step down instructions having a step level, the step level being a change in voltage at which the voltage regulator is configured to step up or step down the DC voltage of the DC power.

The power transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the power transmitter controller is further configured to provide the pulse width modulation signal to the inverter, and wherein the inverter is configured to convert the received DC power to the AC power signal based on the pulse width modulation signal.

3 . The power transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the power transmitter controller is configured to generate the pulse width modulation signal for configuring the AC frequency at an operating frequency band.

4 . The power transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the coil is formed of wound Litz wire and comprises at least one layer.

5 . The power transmitter of claim 4 , wherein the coil defines a top face, and wherein the power transmitter further comprises:

a shielding comprising a ferrite core and defining a cavity, the cavity configured such that the ferrite core substantially surrounds all portions of the coil except for the top face of the coil.

6 . The power transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the power transmitter controller is further configured to:

receive power request signals from the power receiver, and

determine the power control signals based on the power request signals.

7 . The power transmitter of claim 1 , wherein the duty cycle alteration is further configured to alter an amount of power transmitted to the power receiver over a period of time.

8 . A device comprising:

a power supply configured to generate a direct current (DC) power based on power control signals, the power supply comprising:

(i) a voltage regulator, and

(ii) a power supply controller configured to:

(a) receive the power control signals,

(b) generate, based on the power control signals, voltage regulation instructions for altering a DC voltage of the DC power,

(c) provide the voltage regulation instructions to the voltage regulator to control the DC voltage of the DC power, wherein the voltage regulation instructions include voltage step up instructions or voltage step down instructions for the voltage regulator, the voltage step up instructions or voltage step down instructions having a step level, wherein the step level is a change in voltage at which the voltage regulator is configured to step up or step down the DC voltage of the DC power; and

a power transmitter for wireless power transfer, the power transmitter comprising:

(i) an inverter configured to:

(a) receive DC power from the power supply, and

(b) convert the received DC power to an alternating current (AC) power signal;

(ii) a coil configured to transmit the AC power signal to a power receiver; and

(iii) a power transmitter controller configured to:

(a) provide, to the power supply external to the power transmitter, power control signals useable by the power supply for controlling the DC power supplied to the inverter, and

(b) generate a pulse width modulation signal for configuring an AC frequency for the AC power signal, the pulse width modulation signal modified by a duty cycle alteration, the duty cycle alteration configured to shift a root mean square voltage of the AC power signal from an initial root mean square voltage to a shifted root mean square voltage, wherein the shifted root mean square voltage is less than the initial root mean square voltage.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the power transmitter controller is further configured to provide the pulse width modulation signal to the inverter, and wherein the inverter is configured to convert the received DC power to the AC power signal based on the pulse width modulation signal.

10 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the power transmitter controller is configured to generate the pulse width modulation signal for configuring the AC frequency at an operating frequency band.

11 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the power transmitter controller is further configured to:

receive power request signals from the power receiver, and

determine the power control signals based on the power request signals.

12 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the duty cycle alteration is further configured to alter an amount of power transmitted to the power receiver over a period of time.

13 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the power supply comprises a Universal Serial Bus (USB) power supply.

14 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the power supply comprises a quick charge device.

15 . A system for wireless power transfer, the system comprising:

a power supply; and

a power transmitter, wherein the power supply is external to the power transmitter, and wherein the power transmitter comprises:

(i) an inverter configured to:

(a) receive direct current (DC) power from the power supply, and

(b) convert the received DC power to an alternating current (AC) power signal;

(ii) a coil configured to transmit the AC power signal to a power receiver; and

(iii) a power transmitter controller configured to:

(a) provide, to the power supply external to the power transmitter, power control signals useable by the power supply for controlling the DC power supplied to the inverter, and

(b) generate a pulse width modulation signal for configuring an AC frequency for the AC power signal, the pulse width modulation signal modified by a duty cycle alteration, the duty cycle alteration configured to shift a root mean square voltage of the AC power signal from an initial root mean square voltage to a shifted root mean square voltage, wherein the shifted root mean square voltage is less than the initial root mean square voltage, wherein the power supply is configured to configure the DC power based on the power control signals, and wherein the power supply comprises a voltage regulator and a power supply controller, wherein the power supply controller is configured to: (i) receive the power control signals, (ii) generate, based on the power control signals, voltage regulation instructions for altering a DC voltage of the DC power, and (iii) provide the voltage regulation instructions to the voltage regulator to control the DC voltage of the DC power, wherein the voltage regulation instructions include voltage step up instructions or voltage step down instructions for the voltage regulator, the voltage step up instructions or voltage step down instructions having a step level, the step level being a change in voltage at which the voltage regulator is configured to step up or step down the DC voltage of the DC power.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the DC voltage of the DC power is stepped up or stepped down for configuring the initial root mean square voltage of the AC power signal.

17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the step level is in a range of about 10 millivolts (mV) to about 500 mV.

18 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the power supply is configured to:

configure an input DC power to generate the DC power supplied based on the power control signals, and

provide the DC power to the inverter.
