Abstract

Disclosed are methods, devices, and systems for improved protective clothing such as helmets and protective headgear, including improvements in modular, semi-custom or customized helmet liners and/or inserts to enhance wearer comfort and reduce the deleterious effects of impacts between the wearer and other players and/or objects in all types of wearer activities (i.e., sports, military, equestrian, etc.).

Claims (38)

1 . A protective sport helmet comprising:

an outer shell;

a plurality of customizable deformable components positioned inside the outer shell, wherein one or more customizable deformable components of the plurality of customizable deformable components has at least one of a different shape and a different thickness than another deformable component of the plurality of customizable deformable components; and

a second layer positioned between the plurality of customizable deformable components and a head of a wearer, the second layer comprising a plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments, wherein the second layer comprises a strap of flexible material having a terminal end connected to a respective modular liner segment of the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments, wherein the at least one of the different shape and the different thickness of the one or more customizable deformable components of the plurality of customizable deformable components allows a portion of the second layer to accommodate one or more unique anatomical features of the wearer.

2 . The protective sport helmet of claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments include a rear pad; and

the one or more customizable deformable components comprises a curved piece of memory foam that alters a position, an orientation or an alignment of the rear pad to better fit an occipital region of the wearer.

3 . The protective sport helmet of claim 1 , wherein:

the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments include a rear pad; and

the one or more customizable deformable components comprises a curved piece of memory foam that allows the rear pad to better fit an occipital region of the wearer.

4 . The protective sport helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments include a front pad and two side pads.

5 . The protective sport helmet of claim 1 , wherein the one or more customizable deformable components comprise one or more curved pieces of deformable material.

6 . The protective sport helmet of claim 5 , wherein the flexible material comprises a fabric.

7 . The protective sport helmet of claim 5 , wherein the flexible material comprises an elastic band.

8 . The protective sport helmet of claim 5 , wherein the second layer comprises a plurality of straps of flexible material removably connected to respective modular liner segments of the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments.

9 . The protective sport helmet of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments include a front pad, two side pads, a back pad and a midline pad.

10 . The protective sport helmet of claim 5 , wherein the modular liner segments of the plurality of flexibly connected modular liner segments comprise foam pads.

11 . The protective sport helmet of claim 10 , wherein the foam pads comprise:

a foam layer; and

a skin contact layer overlying the foam layer.

12 . The protective sport helmet of claim 11 , wherein the foam layer comprises a medium density foam layer.

13 . The protective sport helmet of claim 11 , wherein the foam layer comprises an impact resistant polymer foam.

14 . The protective sport helmet of claim 11 , wherein the skin contact layer comprises a polymer.

15 . A protective sport helmet comprising:

an outer protective shell;

a modular liner component system comprising a plurality of padded regions comprising flexible connections between respective padded regions of the plurality of padded regions, wherein the modular liner component system comprises a strap of flexible material having an end removably connecting a front pad of the plurality of padded regions to an adjacent side pad of the plurality of padded regions; and

a pad assembly comprising a plurality of curved pieces of deformable material positioned inside the outer protective shell between the modular liner component system and the outer protective shell, wherein:

at least one of the plurality of curved pieces of deformable material has a different thickness than another curved piece of deformable material of the plurality of curved pieces of deformable material; and

the different thickness of the at least one of the plurality of curved pieces of deformable material is configured to allow at least a portion of the modular liner component system to accommodate one or more unique anatomical features of a wearer.

16 . The protective sport helmet of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of padded regions includes the front pad, a rear pad and two side pads.

17 . The protective sport helmet of claim 16 , wherein the modular liner component system comprises respective straps of flexible material connecting adjacent padded regions of the plurality of padded regions.

18 . A protective sport helmet comprising:

an outer protective shell;

a modular liner component system comprising a plurality of padded regions comprising flexible connections between respective padded regions of the plurality of padded regions, wherein the modular liner component system comprises respective straps of flexible material connecting adjacent padded regions of the plurality of padded regions; and

a pad assembly comprising a plurality of curved pieces of deformable material positioned inside the outer protective shell between the modular liner component system and the outer protective shell, wherein:

at least one of the plurality of curved pieces of deformable material has a different thickness than another curved piece of deformable material of the plurality of curved pieces of deformable material; and

the different thickness of the at least one of the plurality of curved pieces of deformable material is configured to allow at least a portion of the modular liner component system to accommodate one or more unique anatomical features of a wearer.

19 . The protective sport helmet of claim 18 , wherein the modular liner component system comprises a strap of flexible material having an end removably connecting a front pad of the plurality of padded regions to an adjacent side pad of the plurality of padded regions.
