Abstract

A garment and sensor system for determining a posture of an individual, the garment and sensor system including a garment, a retention element coupled to the garment, and a sensor module configured to be coupled to the retention element, the sensor module including a sensor configured to generate orientation data and a transceiver configured to transmit the orientation data generated by the sensor, wherein the garment and sensor system is configured to determine a posture of at least a portion of the individual and to display a graphical comparison of the posture to a target posture.

Claims (28)

1 . A system for determining a force characteristic associated with an individual, the system comprising:

a sensor module configured to be physically coupled to the individual, the sensor module comprising an acceleration sensor;

a garment to couple the sensor module to the individual, the garment comprising a textile material, wherein at least a portion of the sensor module is configured to flex with the textile material; and

an interface configured to receive, via a display of a portable electronic device, data representative of a mass of at least a portion of the individual;

the system being configured to determine at least one of an orientation or magnitude of a force based on acceleration data received from the acceleration sensor and the data representative of the mass.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the data representative of the mass is data representative of the mass of only a portion of the individual.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the force characteristic is representative of a force applied by the individual.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the orientation or magnitude of the force comprises a force in multiple, discrete directions.

5 . The system of claim 1 , the interface being configured to provide an output conveying the at least one of the orientation or magnitude of the force.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the system is configured to display a graphical comparison of the at least one of the orientation or magnitude of the force to one or more past values.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is inseparably coupled to the textile material.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the sensor module comprises a flexible printed circuit board (PCB).

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is sewn to the textile material.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is retained within the garment by braiding.

11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is printed on the garment.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is laminated on or between layers of the garment.

13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor module is encapsulated within the garment.

14 . The system of claim 1 , the sensor module further comprising a power source, the power source comprising a thin-film battery.

15 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a waterproof membrane, wherein at least a portion of the sensor module is sealed inside the waterproof membrane.

16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the garment comprises a thermoplastic polymer patch, and at least a portion of the sensor module is printed on the thermoplastic polymer patch.

17 . A method for determining a force characteristic associated with an individual, the method comprising:

providing a garment coupled to a sensor module to the individual, the sensor module comprising an acceleration sensor, at least a portion of the sensor module being printed on a thermoplastic polymer patch of the garment; and

entering, via a display of a portable electronic device, data representative of a mass of at least a portion of the individual; and

receiving, via the display of the portable electronic device, at least one of an orientation or magnitude of a force determined based on acceleration data received from the acceleration sensor and the data representative of the mass.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the entering the data representative of the mass comprises entering data representative of the mass of only a portion of the individual.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the force characteristic is representative of a force applied by the individual.

20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the received at least one of the orientation or magnitude of the force comprises a force in multiple, discrete directions.

21 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising receiving, via the display of the portable electronic device, a graphical comparison of the at least one of the orientation or magnitude of the force to one or more past values.
