Transversely expandable minimally invasive intervertebral cage
Disclosed herein are systems and methods for intervertebral body fusion that provide more robust support within the disc space. Intervertebral body fusion devices can have a unitary monolithic body including a plurality of body segments interconnected with each other by flexure members. Devices be configured to be inserted through an opening in a compressed configuration and then expanded within the disc space to an expanded configuration. In the expanded configuration, devices can have a greater mediolateral or transverse to the disc space footprint. This wider footprint provides greater support for the vertebrae relative to the size of the opening through which the device is inserted.
1 . An expandable intervertebral body fusion device, comprising:
a unitary monolithic body, the body including:
an anterior body segment and an opposing posterior body segment defining a maximum anterior to posterior width of the body;
one or more mediolateral body segments extending between the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment along both a lateral side and a medial side of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment, the one or more mediolateral body segments defining a maximum mediolateral width of the body;
a plurality of mediolateral flexure members connecting adjacent mediolateral body segments; and
a plurality of end flexure members connecting each of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment to adjacent mediolateral body segments,
wherein the body is configured to be mediolaterally expanded from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration by interaction of an expansion tool with the unitary monolithic body causing the one or more mediolateral body segments on the lateral side and the one or more mediolateral body segments on the medial side to generally move away from each other and expand an opening between the one or more mediolateral body segments such that the body forms a greater mediolateral footprint in the expanded configuration than in the compressed configuration,
wherein in the expanded configuration, the mediolateral flexure members are on an exterior of the unitary monolithic body and the end flexure members are on an interior of the unitary monolithic body, and wherein the mediolateral body segments contact one another at a perimeter of the opening between the one or more mediolateral body segments, and the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment each contact adjacent mediolateral body segments at an outer perimeter of the unitary monolithic body,
wherein the anterior body segment defines a generally planar distal surface, a pair of angled surfaces extending rearwardly from the distal surface, and rear surfaces facing generally opposite of the distal surface, and wherein the rear surfaces are configured to nest against adjacent mediolateral body segments when the body is in the expanded configuration, and
further comprising a threaded opening formed in at least one of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment configured to interface with an expansion element configured to be rotated to expand the body to the expanded configuration.
2 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 1 , further comprising a threaded opening formed in at least one of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment configured to interface with a stabilizing element configured to stabilize the body when the body is expanded.
3 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 1 , wherein there are three mediolateral body segments along each of the lateral side and the medial side.
4 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 1 , wherein in the expanded configuration the body has a generally polygonal shape.
5 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 4 , wherein in the expanded configuration the body has a generally octagonal shape.
6 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 1 , wherein in the expanded configuration the mediolateral footprint is approximately doubled in width from the compressed configuration.
7 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 1 , wherein the body is expanded transversely to a disc space to expand the disc space.
8 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 1 , wherein as the body is expanded from the compressed configuration to the expanded configuration, the mediolateral flexure members bend differently than the end flexure members.
9 . An expandable intervertebral body fusion device, comprising:
a unitary monolithic body, the body including:
an anterior body segment and an opposing posterior body segment defining a maximum anterior to posterior width of the body;
one or more mediolateral body segments extending between the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment along both a lateral side and a medial side of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment, the one or more mediolateral body segments defining a maximum mediolateral width of the body;
a plurality of mediolateral flexure members connecting adjacent mediolateral body segments; and
a plurality of end flexure members connecting each of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment to adjacent mediolateral body segments,
wherein the body is configured to be mediolaterally expanded from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration by interaction of an expansion tool with the unitary monolithic body causing the one or more mediolateral body segments on the lateral side and the one or more mediolateral body segments on the medial side to generally move away from each other and expand an opening between the one or more mediolateral body segments such that the body forms a greater mediolateral footprint in the expanded configuration than in the compressed configuration,
wherein as the body is expanded from the compressed configuration to the expanded configuration, the mediolateral flexure members bend differently than the end flexure members, and wherein the mediolateral body segments contact one another at a location inward of the mediolateral flexure members relative to the opening between the one or more mediolateral body segments, and the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment each contact adjacent mediolateral body segments at an outer perimeter of the unitary monolithic body,
wherein the anterior body segment defines a generally planar distal surface, a pair of angled surfaces extending rearwardly from the distal surface and rear surfaces facing generally opposite of the distal surface, and wherein the rear surfaces are configured to nest against adjacent mediolateral body segments when the body is in the expanded configuration, and
further comprising a threaded opening formed in at least one of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment configured to interface with a stabilizing element configured to stabilize the body when the body is expanded.
10 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 9 , further comprising a threaded opening formed in at least one of the anterior body segment and the posterior body segment configured to interface with the expansion tool configured to be rotated to expand the body to the expanded configuration.
11 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 9 , wherein there are three mediolateral body segments along each of the lateral side and the medial side.
12 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 9 , wherein in the expanded configuration the body has a generally polygonal shape.
13 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 12 , wherein in the expanded configuration the body has a generally octagonal shape.
14 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 9 , wherein in the expanded configuration the mediolateral footprint is approximately doubled in width from the compressed configuration.
15 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 9 , wherein the body is expanded transversely to a disc space to expand the disc space.
16 . The expandable intervertebral body fusion device of claim 9 , wherein in the expanded configuration, the mediolateral flexure members are on an exterior of the unitary monolithic body and the end flexure members are on an interior of the unitary monolithic body.
