Wave producing method and apparatus
A method and apparatus for generating a wave in a body of water may include altering a flow of water as it is urged through an inlet, contoured passage, and outlet. For example, a primary flow of water may be altered so that one or more secondary flows are created at angles to the direction of primary flow.
1 . An apparatus for generating a wave in a body of water, the apparatus comprising:
an inlet configured to receive a flow of water;
an outlet configured to discharge a wave including the water from the flow of water; and
a contoured passage coupled between the inlet and the outlet;
wherein the outlet includes:
a trough shaping edge and an opposing shaping edge opposite the trough shaping edge, the opposing shaping edge disposed downstream of the trough shaping edge.
2 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the contoured passage includes a first interior wall adjacent to the opposing shaping edge and a second interior wall adjacent to the trough shaping edge, the first interior wall extending past the second interior wall.
3 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the trough shaping edge is convex relative to an interior of the outlet.
4 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the opposing shaping edge is concave relative to an interior of the outlet.
5 . The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the trough shaping edge is disposed above the opposing shaping edge.
