Abstract

A combination washer/dryer having a cabinet defining an interior, a tub provided within the interior, and a drum rotatably provided within the tub and defining a treating chamber, an induction coil carried by the tub and generating a magnetic field encompassing at least a portion of the container, and a cooling element providing on at least one of the tub or closure to form a cooled surface in fluid communication with the treating chamber.

Claims (41)

1 . A laundry treating appliance comprising:

a tub defining a tub interior, the tub having a peripheral wall and a sump;

a drum located within the tub interior and rotatable about a horizontal axis, the drum at least partially defining a laundry treating chamber with an access opening;

a closure configured to selectively close the access opening;

a motor operably coupled to the drum;

a water supply assembly;

a heating system; and

a condenser having a cooled surface proximate the drum and in fluid communication with the laundry treating chamber, wherein the condenser is configured to condense vapor that contacts the cooled surface of the condenser.

2 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein the condenser is provided on the peripheral wall of the tub or the closure.

3 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein the cooled surface is perpendicular to the horizontal axis.

4 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein the cooled surface defines a portion of the laundry treating chamber.

5 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein a water vapor path to the cooled surface includes passage through at least one of a drum perforation or a vent.

6 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein a water vapor path to the cooled surface is free of travel through a drum perforation and a vent.

7 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein the condenser comprises a header comprising multiple spray nozzles in fluid communication with the water supply assembly and configured to form a cooling water layer proximate the drum.

8 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 7 , wherein the multiple spray nozzles comprise a water curtain flowing down a portion of the peripheral wall to the sump.

9 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein the water supply assembly is a variable water supply assembly.

10 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 9 , wherein a flow rate of water provided by the variable water supply assembly is based on at least one of an amount of water vapor present or a rate of water vapor generated.

11 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 1 , wherein cooling water provided to the cooled surface is recirculated via a recirculation system.

12 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 11 , further comprising a heat exchanger and wherein the cooling water provided to the cooled surface is recirculated via a recirculation system fluidly coupled to the recirculation system.

13 . A laundry treating appliance comprising:

a tub defining a tub interior, the tub having a peripheral wall and a sump;

a drum located within the tub interior, the drum at least partially defining a laundry treating chamber with an access opening;

a closure configured to selectively close the access opening;

a motor operably coupled to the drum;

a water supply assembly;

a heating system; and

a cooled surface defining a portion of the laundry treating chamber and wherein the cooled surface is configured to condense vapor that contacts the cooled surface.

14 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 13 , wherein the cooled surface is perpendicular to a horizontal axis of the drum.

15 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 13 , further comprising at least one sensor and a controller operably coupled to the at least one sensor and a portion of the water supply assembly and wherein the water supply assembly is a variable water supply assembly and wherein the controller controls a flow rate of water provided by the variable water supply assembly based on at least one of a sensed amount of water vapor present or a sensed rate of water vapor generated.

16 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 13 , wherein cooling water provided to the cooled surface is recirculated via a recirculation system.

17 . A laundry treating appliance comprising:

a tub defining a tub interior, the tub having a peripheral wall and a sump;

a drum located within the tub interior and rotatable about a horizontal axis, the drum at least partially defining a laundry treating chamber with an access opening;

a closure configured to selectively close the access opening;

a motor operably coupled to the drum;

a water supply assembly;

a heating system; and

a cooled surface located transverse to the horizontal axis of the drum, wherein the cooled surface is configured to condense vapor that contacts the cooled surface and wherein a water vapor path to the cooled surface is free of travel through a drum perforation and a vent.

18 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 17 , further comprising at least one sensor and a controller operably coupled to the at least one sensor and a portion of the water supply assembly and wherein the water supply assembly is a variable water supply assembly.

19 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 18 , wherein the controller controls a flow rate of water provided by the variable water supply assembly based on at least one of a sensed amount of water vapor present or a sensed rate of water vapor generated.

20 . The laundry treating appliance of claim 19 , wherein cooling water provided to the cooled surface is recirculated via a recirculation system.
