Abstract

An autonomous pile driving system comprises an arm of an autonomous offroad vehicle (AOV) configured to hold and drive a pile, a chute configured to stabilize the pile as the pile is being driven. The autonomous pile driving system further comprises a controller configured to identify a location in the geographic area where a pile is to be driven (e.g., installed) and position the chute at the location. The controller aligns the pile secured by the AOV with an opening of the chute and inserts the pile into the chute by actuating an arm (or other suitable component) of the AOV securing the pile.

Claims (41)

1 . A pile driving system comprising:

an arm of an autonomous off-road vehicle (AOV) configured to hold and drive a pile; and

a controller system configured to:

identify a location of a chute positioned at a location at which the pile is to be driven;

align the pile with the chute at the identified location;

insert the pile into the chute by actuating the arm of the AOV and driving the pile through the chute and into the ground.

2 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein the pile driving system comprises:

a first AOV comprising the arm configured to hold and drive the pile; and

a second AOV configured to position the chute at the identified location.

3 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein the pile driving system comprises one AOV, the one AOV comprising the arm configured to hold and drive the pile and a second arm configured to position the chute at the identified location.

4 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein the autonomous pile driving system is configured to generate a set of instructions for a vehicle to move to the identified location.

5 . The pile driving system of claim 4 , wherein the chute has a mobile base and positioning the chute at the identified location comprises:

navigating the vehicle to push or pull the chute to the identified location.

6 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein aligning the pile with the chute at the identified location further causes the controller to:

determine a localized position of the pile in a coordinate space relative to the chute based on measurements collected by one or more sensors.

7 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein the chute comprises an opening in a bottom surface and a top surface of the chute and the pile is aligned with the opening in the top surface.

8 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein the chute comprises an inner ring, the inner ring configured to:

expand during alignment of the pile and the chute; and

contract once the pile is lowered into the chute, wherein the contracted inner ring secures the pile as the pile is driven through the chute into the ground at the identified location.

9 . The pile driving system of claim 1 , wherein the chute comprises:

an incline sensor configured to measure an incline of the ground at the identified location; and

a leveling mechanism configured to support the chute in response to the incline sensor measuring an incline at the identified location.

10 . A method comprising:

identifying, by an autonomous pile driving system, a location at which a pile is to be driven;

identifying, by the autonomous pile driving system, a chute positioned at the identified location;

aligning, by the autonomous pile driving system, the pile with the chute at the identified location; and

inserting, by the autonomous pile driving system, the pile into the chute by actuating the arm of the AOV and driving the pile through the chute and into the ground.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the pile is held and driven by an arm of a first AOV and the chute is positioned at the identified location by a second AOV.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein, the pile is held and driven by a first arm of the AOV and the chute is positioned at the identified location by a second arm of the AOV.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the autonomous pile driving system is configured to generate a set of instructions for a vehicle to move to the identified location.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the chute has a mobile base and positioning the chute at the identified location comprises:

navigating the vehicle to push or pull the chute to the identified location.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein aligning the pile with the chute at the identified location comprises:

determining a localized position of the pile in a coordinate space relative to the chute based on measurements collected by one or more sensors.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the chute comprises an opening in a bottom surface and a top surface of the chute and the pile is aligned with the opening in the top surface.

17 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the chute comprises an inner ring configured to:

expand during alignment of the pile and the chute; and

contract once the pile is lowered into the chute, wherein the contracted inner ring secures the pile as the pile is driven through the chute into the ground at the identified location.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the chute comprises:

an incline sensor configured to measure an incline of the ground at the identified location; and

a leveling mechanism configured to support the chute in response to the incline sensor measuring an incline at the identified location.
