Abstract

An insertion and extraction system adapted to insert and extract a bit holder from a bore of a base block that includes a hydraulic cylinder, a bolt, a washer, and an extraction cup. The system can further include a nut adapted to engage the bolt. For insertion, the hydraulic cylinder is mounted to the bit holder, the washer is mounted adjacent the base block, the bolt is inserted through the hydraulic cylinder, through the bit holder, through the base block, and through the washer. The nut is threaded onto the bolt and a hose from a hydraulic pump is connected to the hydraulic cylinder. When the pump is activated, the bit holder is inserted into the base block. For extraction, the bit holder is mounted into the extraction cup, the hydraulic cylinder is mounted to the extraction cup, the bolt is inserted through the hydraulic cylinder, through the bit holder, and through the base block, the nut is threaded onto the bolt, and the hose from the hydraulic pump is connected to the hydraulic cylinder. When the pump is activated, the bit holder is extracted from the base block.

Claims (25)

1 . An insertion system for inserting a slotted shank bit holder into a base block, comprising:

a hydraulic cylinder comprising a hydraulic cylinder piston rod extending from a forward end of the hydraulic cylinder to a distal end of the hydraulic cylinder, the hydraulic cylinder adapted to be mounted on a forward end of a bit holder;

an end cover comprising a bore, the end cover adapted to be mounted on a rear face of the base block;

a bolt axially extending through the hydraulic cylinder piston rod and the bore of the end cover, the bolt comprising external threading adjacent a distal end of the bolt, the bolt adapted to axially extend through a bore of the bit holder and a bore of the base block;

the bore of the end cover extending from a front face of the end cover to the rear face of the end cover, the bore of the end cover adapted to receive the distal end of the bolt; and

the bore of the end cover comprising a tapered forward segment adjacent the front face of the end cover, a generally semi-cylindrical middle segment adjacent the tapered forward segment, and a generally cylindrical distal segment adjacent the generally cylindrical middle segment.

2 . An insertion system for inserting a slotted shank bit holder into a base block, comprising:

a hydraulic cylinder comprising a hydraulic cylinder piston rod extending from a forward end of the hydraulic cylinder to a distal end of the hydraulic cylinder, the hydraulic cylinder adapted to be mounted on a forward end of the bit holder;

an end cover comprising a bore, the end cover is mountable on a rear external face of the base block;

a bolt axially extending completely through the hydraulic cylinder piston rod, a bore of the bit holder, a bore of the base block, and the bore of the end cover, the bolt comprising external threading adjacent a distal end of the bolt;

the bore of the end cover extending from a front face of the end cover to the rear face of the end cover, the bore of the end cover adapted to receive the distal end of the bolt; and

the bore of the end cover comprises a tapered forward segment adjacent the front face of the end cover, a generally semi-cylindrical middle segment adjacent the tapered forward segment, and a generally cylindrical distal segment adjacent the generally cylindrical middle segment.

3 . The insertion system of claim 2 , further comprising:

a nut comprising internal threading mounted adjacent a rear face of the end cover, the nut adapted to engage the external threading of the bolt.

4 . The insertion system of claim 2 , the bore of the end cover comprising internal threading adapted to engage the external threading of a shank.

5 . The insertion system of claim 2 , further comprising:

at least one of a manually operated hydraulic pump and a pneumatically operated hydraulic pump comprising a hose connected to a threaded port of the hydraulic cylinder.

6 . The insertion system of claim 2 , the end cover further comprising a pair of flat vertical sides matching vertical sides of the base block and extending from a top portion of the end cover to a distal portion of the end cover.

7 . The insertion system of claim 2 , the front face of the end cover adapted to nearly match a distal profile adjacent a distal end of the bore of the base block.

8 . An insertion system for inserting a bit holder onto a base block, comprising:

a hydraulic cylinder comprising a piston extendable from a forward end of the hydraulic cylinder, the hydraulic cylinder mountable on a forward portion of the bit holder;

an end cover adapted to be mountable on a rear external face of the base block;

said hydraulic cylinder and said end cover each comprising a bore extending therethrough, said bores adapted to be alignable with at least one of the bit holder bore of the bit holder and a base block bore of the base block;

a shank comprising at least one of a radially enlarged end of the shank and a threaded portion adjacent an opposing end of the shank, the shank comprising a bolt that includes an enlarged head at one end and a nut mountable on an opposing end of said shank, said shank adapted to be extendable through at least one of the bit holder bore and the base block bore.

9 . The insertion system of claim 8 , further comprising a pressure pump operatively connected to the hydraulic cylinder.
