Bipod with sling stud mount
An interface for coupling a bipod to a sling stud of a firearm forend. The interface can include two pawls that pivot to release or grasp the sling stud. The pawls can be biased upward via a detent that rides within a vertical aperture in a pivot holder. The pivot holder can move up and down within a vertical aperture in a mounting plate of the interface, and via this movement the pawls may be forced open or closed. A bottom surface of one or both pawls can include an irregular surface different portions of which interface with a top of the detent depending on a vertical position of the pivot holder within the aperture in the mounting plate.
1 . A firearm assembly comprising:
a firearm having a firearm forend, the firearm forend having a sling stud; and
a bipod configured for removable coupling to the firearm forend and the sling stud, the bipod comprising:
a housing;
a first knob configured to secure the bipod to the sling stud when rotated in a first direction; and
a second knob configured to secure or release at least one degree of freedom of movement between the firearm and the housing.
2 . The firearm assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first knob rotates about a first axis and the second knob rotates about a second axis, the first and second axes both intersecting a barrel of the firearm.
3 . The firearm assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second knob is configured to secure or release cant and pivot degrees of freedom between the firearm and the housing.
4 . The firearm assembly of claim 1 , wherein the bipod is configured to couple to the sling stud via two spring-loaded pawls.
5 . The firearm assembly of claim 4 , wherein rotation of the first knob in the first direction causes the two spring-loaded pawls to close on the sling stud.
6 . The firearm assembly of claim 5 , wherein rotation of the first knob in the first direction causes a pivot holder to move along an axis passing through the sling stud, in turn causing the two spring-loaded pawls to close on the sling stud.
7 . A method of operating a bipod comprising:
arranging a firearm forend interface in contact with a firearm forend;
aligning a pair of spring-loaded pawls with a sling stud of the firearm forend;
rotating a first knob in a first direction thereby causing the pair of spring-loaded pawls to close upon the sling stud;
further rotating the first knob in the first direction to pull the firearm forend interface and the firearm forend together;
rotating a second knob in the first direction to loosen an interface in a housing of the bipod;
pivoting or canting the firearm forend relative to the housing; and
rotating the second knob in a second direction to tighten the interface and prevent further pivoting or canting,
wherein the housing is coupled to the first knob via the firearm forend interface.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein rotating the first knob in the first direction causes a pivot axis of the pair of spring-loaded pawls to move toward the firearm forend interface and wherein rotating the first knob in the second direction causes the pivot axis of the pair of spring-loaded pawls to move away from the firearm forend interface.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the rotating the first knob causes a pivot holder encircling at least a portion of the pair of spring-loaded pawls to move along an axis passing through the sling stud.
