Non-line-of-sight deposition of coating on internal components of assembled device
Described herein is a method of depositing a conformal, optically transparent coating onto a surface of one or more internal components that are enclosed within an assembled device including an optical encoder using a non-line-of-sight deposition process without altering a structure of the assembled device or impacting functionality of the assembled device. Also described is an assembled device including an optical encoder, where one or more internal components enclosed within the optical encoder and a coating deposited onto a surface of the internal components, where the coating is a conformal, optically transparent coating that is resistant to corrosion by at least one of fluorine-, chlorine-, sulfur-, hydrogen-, bromine-, or nitrogen-based acids and that does not negatively impact functionality of the internal components.
1 . A method comprising:
loading an assembled device comprising an optical encoder into a deposition chamber, wherein the assembled device comprises one or more internal components that are enclosed within an interior of the optical encoder and an optical window in a wall of the optical encoder, and wherein the one or more internal components capture a position of an object external to the assembled device in accordance with a type associated with the optical encoder; and
depositing a conformal, optically transparent coating onto a surface of the internal components using a non-line-of-sight deposition process without altering a structure of the assembled device or impacting functionality of the assembled device, wherein the conformal, optically transparent coating penetrates an exterior of the assembled device through one or more openings of the assembled device that expose the interior of the assembled device to an external environment.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein depositing the conformal, optically transparent coating onto the surface of the internal components comprises:
injecting a precursor for the conformal, optically transparent coating into the deposition chamber, wherein the precursor penetrates the exterior of the assembled device through the one or more openings of the assembled device.

The method of claim 1 , wherein depositing the conformal, optically transparent coating onto the surface of the internal components comprises performing a chemical vapor deposition process of a poly (p-xylylene) polymer in a vacuum, and wherein the conformal, optically transparent coating comprises a poly (p-xylylene) polymer coating.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the internal components comprise one or more optical components.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more optical components comprise at least one of an optical lens or a laser head.
6 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more optical components are configured to at least one of emit light that exits the assembled device through the optical window or receive light that enters the assembled device through the optical window.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the conformal, optically transparent coating has an approximately uniform thickness of between about 0.1 microns to about 20 microns, and wherein the coating coats an entire interior of the assembled device.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the conformal, optically transparent coating has a thickness of between about 4 microns to about 5 microns.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the conformal, optically transparent coating is resistant to corrosion by at least one of fluorine-based acids, chlorine-based acids, sulfur-based acids, hydrogen-based acids, bromine based-acids, or nitrogen-based acids.
10 . An article comprising:
an assembled device comprising an optical encoder, the optical encoder comprising:
one or more internal components enclosed within an interior of the optical encoder, wherein the one or more internal components capture a position of an object external to the assembled device in accordance with a type associated with the optical encoder; and
an optical window in a wall of the optical encoder; and
a coating deposited, by a coating process, onto a surface of the internal components enclosed, wherein the coating is a conformal, optically transparent coating that is resistant to corrosion by at least one of fluorine-based acids, chlorine-based acids, sulfur-based acids, hydrogen-based acids, bromine-based acids, or nitrogen-based acids and that does not negatively impact a functionality of the internal components of the optical encoder.
11 . The article of claim 10 , wherein the coating comprises a poly (p-xylylene) polymer coating.
12 . The article of claim 11 , wherein the coating comprises C 16 H 14 Cl 2 .
13 . The article of claim 10 , wherein the internal components comprise one or more optical components.
14 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the one or more optical components comprise at least one of an optical lens or a laser head.
15 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the one or more optical components are configured to at least one of emit light that exits the assembled device through the optical window or receive light that enters the assembled device through the optical window.
16 . The article of claim 10 , wherein the coating has an approximately uniform thickness of between about 0.1 microns to about 20 microns, and wherein the coating coats an entire interior of the assembled device.
17 . The article of claim 10 , wherein the coating has a thickness of between about 4 microns to about 5 microns.
18 . An article comprising an assembled device comprising an optical encoder, wherein the optical encoder comprises one or more internal components enclosed within an interior of the optical encoder and an optical window in a wall of the optical encoder, wherein the one or more internal components capture a position of an object external to the assembled device in accordance with a type associated with the optical encoder, and a coating deposited onto a surface of the internal components enclosed within the optical encoder, wherein the coating is a conformal, optically transparent coating, the article having been manufactured by a process comprising:
loading the assembled device into a deposition chamber; and
depositing the coating onto the surface of the internal components using a non-line-of-sight deposition process without altering a structure of the assembled device or impacting functionality of the assembled device, wherein the coating penetrates an exterior of the assembled device through one or more openings of the assembled device that expose the interior of the assembled device to an external environment.
19 . The article of claim 10 , wherein the coating is not deposited onto the optical window.
20 . The article of claim 10 , wherein the type associated with the optical encoder comprises one or more of an optical linear encoder type or an optical rotary encoder type.
