Abstract

A display device comprising: a see-through display assembly comprising an at least partially transparent display configured to display to a user an augmented reality (AR) image comprising a virtual reality (VR) image presented over a scene of a patient; and a pantoscopic tilting assembly configured to pivotably adjust a pantoscopic tilt angle of the see-through display assembly.

Claims (65)

1 . A display device, comprising:

a see-through display assembly comprising an at least partially transparent display configured to display to a user an augmented reality (AR) image comprising a virtual reality (VR) image presented over a scene of a patient; and

a pantoscopic tilting assembly configured to pivotably adjust a pantoscopic tilt angle of the see-through display assembly and comprising:

an arc-shaped slot that pivotably couples a portion of the see-through display assembly to a portion of a frame, the frame operably coupled to the display device; and

a detent mechanism comprising a detent configured to selectively retain the see-through display assembly in a predefined position.

2 . The display device of claim 1 , wherein the detent mechanism further comprises a spring-loaded pin or ball.

3 . The display device of claim 2 , wherein the detent mechanism further comprises a guide member slidably engaged with the arc-shaped slot, the guide member configured to apply a force to the spring-loaded pin or ball to move the spring-loaded pin or ball from a first detent to a second detent.

4 . The display device of claim 2 , wherein the arc-shaped slot defines a virtual hinge that comprises an axis of rotation that is configured to be aligned with a center of an eyeball of a user.

5 . The display device of claim 2 , wherein the display device is a head-mounted display device and further comprises a head mounting assembly configured to retain a frame in a position on a head of a user, the head mounting assembly comprising at least one of a strap, a temple arm, or a forehead support.

6 . The display device of claim 5 , wherein the head mounting assembly comprises an adjustable strap assembly that comprises the strap, the strap being a first side strap that has a first end coupled to a first end of the frame, and the adjustable strap assembly further comprises:

a second side strap having a first end coupled to a second end of the frame; and

an adjustment mechanism configured to adjust a position of a second end of the first side strap with respect to a second end of the second side strap, in order to adjust a circumferential size defined by the first side strap, the second side strap, and the frame.

7 . The display device of claim 6 , wherein:

each of the first side strap and the second side strap comprises a rack, and

the adjustment mechanism of the head mounting assembly comprises:

a pinion engaged with the rack of the first side strap and with the rack of the second side strap; and

a knob configured to cause rotation of the pinion in order to adjust the circumferential size defined by the first side strap, the second side strap, and the frame.

8 . The display device of claim 7 , wherein the adjustment mechanism of the head mounting assembly further comprises a tension mechanism that resist rotation of the knob until a threshold force is overcome.

9 . The display device of claim 6 , wherein:

the head mounting assembly further comprises a forehead support, and

the forehead support comprises:

a first end pivotably coupled to the first side strap;

a second end pivotably coupled to the second side strap; and a central support coupled to the frame.

10 . The display device of claim 5 , wherein the head mounting assembly further comprises a forehead support, the forehead support comprising:

a first temple housing pivotably coupled to a first end of the frame and slidably coupled to the head mounting assembly; and

a second temple housing pivotably coupled to a second end of the frame and slidably coupled to the head mounting assembly.

11 . The display device of claim 10 , further comprising one or more processors configured to render images for display by the at least partially transparent display, wherein at least one of the one or more processors is positioned within the first temple housing or the second temple housing.

12 . The display device of claim 11 , wherein each of the first temple housing and the second temple housing includes a heat-dissipating fin.

13 . The display device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a flashlight assembly detachably coupled to the frame,

wherein the frame further comprises a flashlight mounting socket, and

wherein the flashlight mounting socket comprises:

a first rod that defines a pivot axis; and

a second rod positioned parallel to the first rod, and

wherein the flashlight assembly comprises:

a first recess shaped to engage and pivot about the first rod of the flashlight mounting socket;

a second recess shaped to engage the second rod of the flashlight mounting socket, the second recess being oriented such that the first recess cannot disengage the first rod when the second recess is engaged with the second rod; and

a movable latch configured to selectively retain the second recess in engagement with the second rod.

14 . The display device of claim 13 , the display device further comprising a spring that biases the movable latch toward a position that retains the second recess in engagement with the second rod.

15 . The display device of claim 13 , the flashlight assembly further comprising:

a flashlight;

a mounting base that comprises the first recess, the second recess, and the movable latch; and

one or more arms that pivotably couple the flashlight to the mounting base.

16 . The display device of claim 13 , wherein the flashlight mounting socket comprises a first electrical contact configured to electrically couple to a corresponding second electrical contact of the flashlight assembly.

17 . The display device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a processor configured to:

receive one or more anatomical images of the patient and signals indicative of at least a position of the see-through display assembly relative to the scene of the patient; and

render the AR image to the see-through display assembly,

wherein the see-through display assembly is configured to rotate relative to a frontal plane of the user for setting the pantoscopic tilt angle of the see-through display assembly.

18 . A computer-implemented method for displaying to a user an augmented reality (AR) image comprising a virtual reality (VR) image presented over a scene of a patient, comprising:
