Abstract

A banknote deposit-withdrawal system ( 300 ) for assisting in a financial transaction includes an opening ( 415 ) to receive banknotes in an orientation where the short edge of the banknotes is the leading-edge. A transportation mechanism ( 303 ) transports received banknotes to a separation area in the short edge leading-edge orientation. A separator mechanism ( 22014 ) separates banknotes from bulk in the separation area and transports banknotes serially to a sensing unit ( 1402 ) in a long edge leading-edge orientation. The sensing unit validates the authenticity of inserted banknotes in the long edge leading-edge orientation. After authentication, if rejected, banknotes are returned to the user in short edge leading-edge orientation. After authentication banknotes deemed genuine are sent to storage units ( 1406 ) in the long edge leading-edge orientation. The opening ( 415 ) is operated in a single banknote insertion mode, a bulk banknote insertion mode, a rejection of unacceptable banknote mode, and a banknote dispense mode.

Claims (21)

1 . A banknote deposit-withdrawal system for performing deposit of banknotes to assist in a financial transaction, the banknote deposit-withdrawal system comprising:

a transportation path;

an acceptance module with an opening to receive the banknotes in bulk in a short leading edge orientation, wherein the acceptance module includes a surface of the transportation path and a movable platform disposed above the surface of the transportation path, and the banknotes are received into the opening between the surface of the transportation path and a bottom surface of the movable platform positioned in a first position, and wherein the opening includes a movable shutter configured to move to a plurality of different positions each corresponding to one of three distinct operating modes, wherein the three distinct operating modes includes a single banknote insertion mode, a bulk banknote insertion mode, and a banknote rejection mode, and wherein the movable shutter moves to the plurality of different positions each corresponding to the one of the three distinct operating modes to vary a size of the opening based on the one of the three distinct operating modes;

a separation area disposed in the transportation path beyond the acceptance module that receives the banknotes in bulk in the short leading edge orientation;

a separator in the separation area to separate the banknotes from bulk and to provide individual banknotes serially along the transportation path in a long leading edge orientation; and

a sensor disposed within a sensing module for validating an authenticity of the banknotes received into the sensing module in the long leading edge orientation,

wherein the transportation path transports rejected banknotes in the long leading edge orientation from the sensing module back to a top surface of the movable platform,

wherein the movable platform moves to a second position after collecting the rejected banknotes, and

wherein the rejected banknotes are presented from the opening to a user in bulk in the short leading edge orientation.

2 . The banknote deposit-withdrawal system of claim 1 , wherein the transportation path is further configured to move accepted banknotes to a banknote storage module in a substantially forward direction.

3 . The banknote deposit-withdrawal system of claim 1 , wherein the transportation path is further configured to move inserted banknotes in a substantially forward direction between modules.

4 . The banknote deposit-withdrawal system of claim 1 , wherein the transportation path is further configured to move rejected banknotes in a substantially forward direction.

5 . A banknote deposit-withdrawal system for performing deposit of banknotes to assist in a financial transaction, the banknote deposit-withdrawal system comprising:

a transportation path;

an acceptance module with an opening to receive the banknotes in a short leading edge orientation and operable in three distinct operating modes including a single banknote insertion mode, a bulk banknote insertion mode, and a banknote rejection mode, wherein the acceptance module includes a surface of the transportation path and a movable platform disposed above the surface of the transportation path and the banknotes are received into the opening between the surface of the transportation path and a bottom surface of the movable platform, wherein the opening includes a movable shutter configured to move to a plurality of different positions and to vary a size of the opening for each of the three distinct operating modes,

a separation area disposed in the transportation path beyond the acceptance module that receives the banknotes in the short leading edge orientation;

a separator in the separation area to separate the banknotes from bulk and to provide individual banknotes serially along the transportation path in a long leading edge orientation; and

a sensor disposed within a sensing module for validating an authenticity of the banknotes received into the sensing module in the long leading edge orientation,

wherein in bulk banknote insertion mode, the banknotes are received in bulk into the opening with the movable platform and the movable shutter each positioned in a first position, and transported along the transportation path in the short leading edge orientation to the separation area,

wherein in banknote rejection mode, rejected banknotes transported along the transportation path in the long leading edge orientation from the sensing module are received onto a top surface of the movable platform, the movable platform and movable shutter each move to a second position after collecting the rejected banknotes, and the rejected banknotes are dispensed from the opening in bulk in the short leading edge orientation.

6 . The banknote deposit-withdrawal system of claim 5 , wherein in the single banknote insertion mode, the banknotes are received serially into the opening with the movable platform and the movable shutter each positioned in a third position and transported along the transportation path in the short leading edge orientation to the separation area.
