Claims (55)

1 . An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a housing comprising an access door;

a security monitoring circuit supported by the housing;

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

cause a display device to display a plurality of ranked positions and a player identifier associated with at least one of the ranked positions,

cause the display device to display an opportunity for a general player to place a wager on a total duration the player identifier will be associated with the at least one of the ranked positions, and

responsive to the wager being placed and following an opening of the access door being detected via the security monitoring circuit:

store data associated with a display state of the electronic gaming machine comprising the plurality of ranked positions and the player identifier associated with the at least one of the ranked positions,

disable any determination of whether the player identifier was associated with the at least one of the ranked positions for at least the wagered on total duration, and

following at least a closing of the access door detected via the security monitoring circuit:

load the stored data to reconstitute the display state of the electronic gaming machine,

enable a determination of whether the player identifier was associated with the at least one of the ranked positions for at least the wagered on total duration, and

responsive to the determination being that the player identifier was associated with the at least one of the ranked positions for at least the wagered on total duration, cause the display device to display an award for the general player.

2 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the award comprises a first amount based, at least in part, on a first total duration the player identifier was associated with a first ranked position over a period of time, and the award comprises a second, different amount based, at least in part, on a second, different total duration the player identifier was associated with the first ranked position over the period of time.

3 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 2 , wherein the award comprises a third amount based, at least in part, on the first total duration the player identifier was associated with a second ranked position, the third amount being different from the first amount.

4 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the award comprises a first amount based, at least in part, on a first total duration the player identifier was associated with a first ranked position over a quantity of games played, and the award comprises a second, different amount based, at least in part, on a second, different total duration the player identifier was associated with the first ranked position over the quantity of games played.

5 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 4 , wherein the award comprises a third amount based, at least in part, on the first total duration the player identifier was associated with a second ranked position, the third amount being different from the first amount.

6 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to cause the display device to display a ranked position movement notification associated with the player identifier.

7 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein at each point in time of the total duration, the ranked position associated with the player identifier is based on at least one event occurring in association with that point in time.

8 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein at each point in time of the total duration, the ranked position associated with the player identifier is based on a plurality of events that occurred over the total duration.

9 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 1 , wherein the general player is associated with the player identifier prior to the wager being placed.

10 . An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a housing comprising an access door;

a security monitoring circuit supported by the housing;

a processor; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

cause a display device to display a leaderboard comprising at least a first ranked position associated with a first player identifier and a second, different ranked position associated with a second, different player identifier,

cause the display device to display an opportunity for a general player to place a wager associated with an activity of the leaderboard, the general player being distinct from any player associated with any player identifier associated with any of the ranked positions, and

responsive to the wager being placed and following an opening of the access door being detected via the security monitoring circuit:

store data associated with a display state of the electronic gaming machine comprising at least the first ranked position associated with the first player identifier and the second, different ranked position associated with the second, different player identifier,

disable any determination of whether the wagered on activity of the leaderboard occurred, and

following at least a closing of the access door detected via the security monitoring circuit:

load the stored data to reconstitute the display state of the electronic gaming machine,

enable a determination of whether the wagered on activity of the leaderboard occurred, and

responsive to the determination being that the wagered on activity of the leaderboard occurred, cause the display device to display an award for the general player.

11 . The electronic gaming machine of claim 10 , wherein the wager associated with the activity of the leaderboard comprises any of: a wager on a length of time the first player identifier will remain associated with the first ranked position, a wager on a quantity of games the first player identifier will remain associated with the first ranked position, a wager on a length of time the second, different player identifier will remain associated with the second, different ranked position, a wager on a quantity of games the second, different player identifier will remain associated with the second, different ranked position, a wager on a duration before a third player identifier is associated with the first ranked position, and a wager on a duration before the third player identifier is associated with the second, different ranked position.

12 . A method of operating an electronic gaming machine, the method comprising:

displaying, by a display device, a plurality of ranked positions and a player identifier associated with at least one of the ranked positions,

displaying, by the display device, an opportunity for a general player to place a wager on a total duration the player identifier will be associated with the at least one of the ranked positions, and

responsive to the wager being placed and following an opening of the access door being detected via the security monitoring circuit:

storing, by a processor, data associated with a display state of the electronic gaming machine comprising the plurality of ranked positions and the player identifier associated with the at least one of the ranked positions,

disabling, by the processor, any determination of whether the player identifier was associated with the at least one of the ranked positions for at least the wagered on total duration, and

following at least a closing of the access door detected via the security monitoring circuit:

loading, by the processor, the stored data to reconstitute the display state of the electronic gaming machine,

enabling, by the processor, a determination of whether the player identifier was associated with the at least one of the ranked positions for at least the wagered on total duration, and

responsive to the determination being that the player identifier was associated with the at least one of the ranked positions for at least the wagered on total duration, displaying, by the display device, an award for the general player.

13 . The method of claim 12 wherein the award comprises a first amount based, at least in part, on a first total duration the player identifier was associated with a first ranked position over a period of time, and the award comprises a second, different amount based, at least in part, on a second, different total duration the player identifier was associated with the first ranked position over the period of time.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the award comprises a third amount based, at least in part, on the first total duration the player identifier was associated with a second ranked position, the third amount being different from the first amount.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the award comprises a first amount based, at least in part, on a first total duration the player identifier was associated with a first ranked position over a quantity of games played, and the award comprises a second, different amount based, at least in part, on a second, different total duration the player identifier was associated with the first ranked position over the quantity of games played.
