Wireless power and data transfer system with out of band communications hand off
A method of operating a power and data transfer system includes determining, by a wireless transmission system, presence of a wireless receiver system. The method further includes starting wireless power and data transfer via the wireless transmission system, if presence of the wireless receiver system is detected. The method further includes determining if power at a load associated with the wireless receiver system exceeds a threshold for out of band communications. The method further includes, if the power at the load exceeds the threshold for out of band communications, handing over wireless data transfer to an out of band communications system that is in operative communication with the wireless transmission system.
1 . A method of operating a wearable electronic device that includes (i) a load, (ii) a wireless receiver system that comprises at least one receiver antenna operating at an operating frequency, and (iii) an out-of-band communications system, the method comprising:
receiving a wireless power and data transmission by the wireless receiver system, the wireless power and data transmission starting based on a wireless transmitter system determining presence of the wireless receiver system;
transmitting a power level at the load by the wireless receiver system to the wireless transmitter system;
receiving an out-of-band communications requests by the out-of-band communications system of wearable electronic device from an out-of-band communication system that is in operative communication with the wireless transmitter system, the out-of-band communications requests based on the wireless transmitter system determining the power level at the load exceeds a threshold for out-of-band communications;
transmitting a communications address associated with the out-of-band communications system of the wearable electronic device to the out-of-band communication system in operative communication with the wireless transmitter system;
connecting the out-of-band communication system of the wearable electronic device to the out-of-band communication system in operative communication with the wireless transmitter system; and
receiving out-of-band wireless data by the out-of-band communications system of the wearable electronic device based on the wireless transmitter handing over wireless data transmission to the out-of-band communication system in operative communication with the wireless transmitter system.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the communications address is a media access control address (MAC address).
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the out-of-band communication system in operative communication with the wireless transmitter system and the out-of-band communications system of the wearable electronic device are both Bluetooth communications systems.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising ending the receiving of the out-of-band wireless data by the out-of-band communications system of the wearable electronic device when a data transfer operation is complete.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the operating frequency of the at least one receiver antenna is one of about 6.78 megahertz (MHz) or 13.56 MHz.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless receiver system further comprises a power conditioning system configured to (i) receive the wireless power and data transmission from the at least one receiver antenna, (ii) convert the received wireless power and data transmission to a DC power signal, and (iii) provide the DC power signal at least to the load.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the wireless receiver system further includes a receiver controller, the method further comprising:
decoding the DC power signal, by the receiver controller, to extract a first data signal compliant with a wireless power and data transfer protocol;
decoding the first data signal compliant with the wireless power and data transfer protocol to extract a first asynchronous serial data signa;
encoding a second asynchronous serial data signal as a second data signal compliant with the wireless power and data transfer protocol; and
altering the DC power signal to encode the second data signal compliant with the wireless power and data transfer protocol into wireless power and data transmission; and
receiving out-of-band communications at the out-of-band communications system of the wearable electronic device in accordance with an out-of-band communications protocol.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the second data signal continues transmission by the out-of-band communications system of the wearable electronic device when the out-of-band communications system in operative communication with the wireless transmitter system takes over wireless data transmission, and wherein the second data signal includes wireless power transfer related data.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the out-of-band communications protocol s a Bluetooth protocol.
