Abstract

Methods and apparatuses to deliver at least a portion of an advertisement to a viewer at normal playback speeds after receiving a command from the viewer to fast-forward through an advertisement faster than normal playback speeds are described. In one example, a portion of the advertisement may be delivered to be played at normal playback speeds, and the remaining portion may be delivered to be played at a playback speed that is faster than the specified playback speed so that the combination of the portions delivered at normal and faster playback speeds is delivered to the user at the specified playback speed. In another example, at least a portion of the first advertisement may be delivered at normal playback speeds, and one or more other advertisements may be delivered to the viewer simultaneously with the first advertisement with the audio information muted based on the specified playback speed.

Claims (64)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, from a computing device, a command for controlling playback of a media content, wherein the command for controlling playback comprises at least one of a pause, fast-forward, or skip command;

sending, to the computing device and based at least in part on the received command for controlling playback of the media content, a plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device with a user selectable option for playback of an advertisement of the plurality of advertisements without simultaneous playback of the plurality of advertisements or the media content;

receiving, from the computing device, a selection of the user selectable option;

causing, based at least in part on the received selection of the user selectable option, at least a portion of the selected advertisement to be played at the computing device without simultaneous playback of the plurality of advertisements or the media content; and

providing, to the computing device for display, the media content for playback.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a number of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display based at least in part on a playback speed associated with the command for controlling playback of the media content.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending, to the computing device, a first subset of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the first subset of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device;

receiving, from the computing device, a first request for playback of a first selected advertisement from the first subset of the plurality of advertisements;

causing, based at least in part on the first request for playback of the first selected advertisement from the plurality of advertisements, at least a portion of the first selected advertisement from the first subset to be displayed at the computing device without simultaneous display of the plurality of advertisements;

sending, to the computing device, a second subject of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the second subset of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device;

receiving, from the computing device, a second request for playback of a second selected advertisement from the second subset of the plurality of advertisements; and

causing, based at least in part on the second request for playback of the second selected advertisement from the plurality of advertisements, at least a portion of the second selected advertisement from the second subset to be displayed at the computing device without simultaneous display of the plurality of advertisements.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of advertisements shares at least one content element in common with the media content.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a duration of the at least a portion of the selected advertisement corresponds to a level of user interest in the selected advertisement.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of advertisements comprises a different version or media segments of a common advertisement content.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of advertisements shares a common advertising source.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of advertisements comprises content associated with a common product or service.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting an audio track associated with one of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display;

causing a portion of the audio track to be played during the simultaneous display of the plurality of advertisements.

10 . A device comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the device to:

receive, from a computing device, a command for controlling playback of a media content, wherein the command for controlling playback comprises at least one of a pause, fast-forward, or skip command;

send, to the computing device and based at least in part on the received command for controlling playback of the media content, a plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device with a user selectable option for playback of an advertisement of the plurality of advertisements without simultaneous playback of the plurality of advertisements or the media content;

receive, from the computing device, a selection of the user selectable option;

cause, based at least in part on the received selection of the user selectable option, at least a portion of the selected advertisement to be played at the computing device without simultaneous playback of the plurality of advertisements or the media content; and

provide, to the computing device for display, the media content for playback.

11 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the device to:

determine a number of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display based at least in part on a playback speed associated with the command for controlling playback of the media content.

12 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the device to:

send, to the computing device, a first subset of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the first subset of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device;

receive, from the computing device, a first request for playback of a first selected advertisement from the first subset of the plurality of advertisements;

cause, based at least in part on the first request for playback of the first selected advertisement from the plurality of advertisements at least a portion of the first selected advertisement from the first subset to be displayed at the computing device without simultaneous display of the plurality of advertisements;

send, to the computing device, a second subset of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the second subset of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device;

receive, from the computing device, a second request for playback of a second selected advertisement from the second subset of the plurality of advertisements; and

cause, based at least in part on the second request for playback of the second selected advertisement from the plurality of advertisements, at least a portion of the second selected advertisement from the second subset to be displayed at the computing device without simultaneous display of the plurality of advertisements.

13 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the one or more processors, further cause the device to:

select an audio track associated with one of the plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display;

cause a portion of the audio track to be played during the simultaneous display of the plurality of advertisements.

14 . A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium having non-transitory, computer-readable instructions encoded thereon that, when executed by control circuitry, cause the control circuitry to:

receive, from a computing device, a command for controlling playback of a media content, wherein the command for controlling playback comprises at least one of a pause, fast-forward, or skip command;

send, to the computing device and based at least in part on the received command for controlling playback of the media content, a plurality of advertisements for simultaneous display of at least a portion of each of the plurality of advertisements at the computing device with a user selectable option for playback of an advertisement of the plurality of advertisements without simultaneous playback of the plurality of advertisements or the media content;

receive, from the computing device, a selection of the user selectable option;
