Directional streetlight control
Techniques for adjusting light direction and light intensity from streetlights in an environment. For example, a streetlight may include an adjustable light source that can be configured to cast light based on its specific installation environment, taking into account height (e.g., a height of a pole coupled with the streetlight relative to a surface of the environment), an angle in which the streetlight is coupled to the pole, a type of surface being lit (e.g., blacktop, concrete, grass, etc.), an amount of light present from surrounding fixtures (e.g., streetlights), and/or an intended area to illuminate (light only streets and sidewalks, light only parking lot, light only walking paths, etc.).
1 . A method, comprising:
receiving, at a streetlight device located in an environment, input data from a user device associated with a user, wherein the input data includes a selection from multiple illumination configurations based on at least one surface type from multiple surface types and geolocation data that comprises a plurality of geolocation coordinates corresponding to a plurality of positions along a perimeter of the environment;
generating a geofenced region based at least in part on a boundary defined by the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
storing the geofenced region in a memory of the streetlight device;
determining, based at least in part on the input data, a first type of area including a first surface type of the multiple surface types located within the environment; associating the first type of area with a first subset of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
configuring a first portion of a light source within the streetlight device to a first configuration from the multiple illumination configurations based at least in part on the first type of area, the first subset of geolocation coordinates, and the first surface type located within the geofenced region;
determining, based at least in part on the input data, a second type of area including a second surface type of the multiple surface types located within the geofenced region;
associating the second type of area with a second subset of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates; and
configuring a second portion of the light source within the streetlight device to a second configuration from the multiple illumination configurations based at least in part on the second type of area, the second subset of geolocation coordinates, and the second surface type located within the geofenced region, wherein the first configuration is different than the second configuration.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the first type of area is indicated by the user to be illuminated to a first light intensity and the second type of area is indicated by the user to be illuminated to a second light intensity, the first type of area being associated with a first section of the environment and the second type of area being associated with a second section of the environment.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the input data is received via an application stored on the user device and communicatively coupled to the streetlight device.
4 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising receiving, via the application, image data of the environment, the image data including a selection of portions of the environment to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending image data from the streetlight device to the user device, the input data including a selection of portions of the image data to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the input data includes the geolocation data of the user device and a selection of areas associated with the geolocation data to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the input data includes a grid overlay of the environment and a selection of portions of the grid overlay to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
8 . A method, comprising:
communicatively coupling an application operating on a user device with a streetlight device;
capturing an image of an environment using a camera of the user device;
presenting, via the application, the image of the environment with a grid overlay superimposed over the image of the environment;
receiving user input data on the grid overlay indicating portions of the grid overlay to be illuminated, wherein the user input data includes a selection from multiple illumination configurations based on at least one surface type from multiple surface types, the multiple surface types including at least one of:
a street;
a sidewalk;
a parking lot;
a walking path;
a no trespassing zone;
a residential area;
a landscaped area; or
a commercial business area;
receiving geolocation data while a user associated with the user device travels a perimeter of the environment, wherein the geolocation data comprises a plurality of geolocation coordinates corresponding to a plurality of positions along the perimeter of the environment;
generating a geofenced region based at least in part on a boundary defined by the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
associating the portions of the grid overlay indicated to be illuminated with corresponding subsets of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates; and
sending the grid overlay, the plurality of geolocation coordinates, and the user input data to the streetlight device.
9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein sending the grid overlay and the user input data to the streetlight device causes the streetlight device to:
configure a first portion of a light source within the streetlight device to a first configuration based at least in part on a first type of area located within the environment;
determine, based at least in part on the user input data, a second type of area located within the environment; and
configure a second portion of the light source within the streetlight device to a second configuration based at least in part on the second type of area located within the environment, wherein the first configuration is different than the second configuration.
10 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:
receiving sensor data including at least an image of a pole coupled to the streetlight device; and
determining a height of the pole based at least in part on the sensor data.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the grid overlay and the user input data is sent from the user device to the streetlight device via near field communication (NFC).
12 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising sending, via the application, instructions to the streetlight device to adjust at least one portion of a light source within the streetlight device.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the light source includes at least one of:
an adjustable shutter system;
an adjustable LED array; or
an adjustable micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) mirror chip array.
14 . A streetlight device, comprising:
one or more processors; and
one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions executable by the one or more processors, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the streetlight device to perform operations comprising:
receiving, at a streetlight device located in an environment, geolocation data and user input data from a user device associated with a user while the user travels a perimeter of the environment, wherein the geolocation data comprises a plurality of geolocation coordinates corresponding to a plurality of positions along the perimeter of the environment and, the user input data includes a selection from multiple illumination configurations based on at least one surface type from multiple surface types;
generating a geofenced region based at least in part on a boundary defined by the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
storing the geofenced region in a memory of the streetlight device;
determining, based at least in part on the user input data, a type of area including a surface type of the multiple surface types located within the geofenced region;
determining, based at least in part on the geolocation data, a location of the type of area located within the geofenced region;
associating the type of area with a subset of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates; and
configuring a portion of a light source within the streetlight device from a first configuration to a second configuration of the multiple illumination configurations based at least in part on the type of area, the surface type, the subset of geolocation coordinates, and the location of the type of area within the geofenced region.
15 . The streetlight device of claim 14 , further comprising receiving signal strength data from the user device and determining the location of the type of area based at least in part on the signal strength data.
16 . The streetlight device of claim 14 , wherein the type of area is indicated by the user to be illuminated to a first light intensity and the streetlight device is further configured to receive additional user input data identifying an additional type of area indicated by the user to be illuminated to a second light intensity.
17 . The streetlight device of claim 14 , wherein the user input data is received via an application stored on the user device and communicatively coupled to the streetlight device.
18 . The streetlight device of claim 17 , further comprising receiving, via the application, image data of the environment, the image data including a selection of portions of the environment to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
19 . The streetlight device of claim 14 , further comprising sending image data from the streetlight device to the user device, the user input data including a selection of portions of the image data to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
20 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium, comprising machine-readable instructions that, when executed by a processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising at least:
receiving, at the computing device located in an environment, input data and geolocation data from a user device associated with a user while the user travels a perimeter of the environment, wherein the geolocation data comprises a plurality of geolocation coordinates corresponding to a plurality of positions along the perimeter of the environment, wherein the input data includes a selection from multiple illumination configurations based on at least one surface type from multiple surface types;
generating a geofenced region based at least in part on a boundary defined by the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
storing the geofenced region in a memory of the computing device;
determining, based at least in part on the input data, a first type of area including a first surface type of the multiple surface types located within the geofenced region;
associating the first type of area with a first subset of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
configuring a first portion of a light source within the computing device to a first configuration from the multiple illumination configurations based at least in part on the first type of area, the first subset of geolocation coordinates, and the first surface type located within the environment;
determining, based at least in part on the input data, a second type of area including a second surface type of the multiple surface types located within the geofenced region environment;
associating the second type of area with a second subset of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates; and
configuring a second portion of the light source within the computing device to a second configuration from the multiple illumination configurations based at least in part on the second type of area, the second subset of geolocation coordinates, and the second surface type located within the geofenced region, wherein the first configuration is different than the second configuration.
21 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 20 , wherein the first type of area is indicated by the user to be illuminated to a first light intensity and the second type of area is indicated by the user to be illuminated to a second light intensity, the first type of area being associated with a first section of the environment and the second type of area being associated with a second section of the environment.
22 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium, comprising machine-readable instructions that, when executed by a processor of a computing device, cause the computing device to perform operations comprising at least:
communicatively coupling an application operating on the computing device with a streetlight device;
capturing an image of an environment using a camera of the computing device;
presenting, via the application, the image of the environment with a grid overlay superimposed over the image of the environment;
receiving user input data on the grid overlay indicating portions of the grid overlay to be illuminated, wherein the user input data includes a selection from multiple illumination configurations based on at least one surface type from multiple surface types, the multiple surface types including at least one of:
a street;
a sidewalk;
a parking lot;
a walking path;
a no trespassing zone;
a residential area;
a landscaped area; or
a commercial business area;
receiving geolocation data while a user associated with the computing device travels a perimeter of the environment, wherein the geolocation data comprises a plurality of geolocation coordinates corresponding to a plurality of positions along the perimeter of the environment;
generating a geofenced region based at least in part on a boundary defined by the plurality of geolocation coordinates;
associating the portions of the grid overlay indicated to be illuminated with corresponding subsets of geolocation coordinates from the plurality of geolocation coordinates; and
sending the grid overlay, the plurality of geolocation coordinates, and the user input data to the streetlight device.
23 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 22 , wherein sending the grid overlay and the user input data to the streetlight device causes the streetlight device to:
configure a first portion of a light source within the streetlight device to a first configuration based at least in part on a first type of area located within the environment;
determine, based at least in part on the user input data, a second type of area located within the environment; and
configure a second portion of the light source within the streetlight device to a second configuration based at least in part on the second type of area located within the environment, wherein the first configuration is different than the second configuration.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 22 , the operations further comprising sending image data from the streetlight device to a user device, the user input data including a selection of portions of the image data to be illuminated to a first light intensity or a second light intensity.
