Article of footwear with midsole having variable stiffness
An article of footwear comprising an upper and a sole assembly connected to the upper. The sole assembly may comprise a midsole with a variable stiffness that provides different stiffness gradients in different regions of the sole assembly. The midsole may comprise a core piece and a perimeter piece surrounding the core piece. The perimeter piece may include a recess for receiving the core piece. In some cases, the recess may not or need not extend into a medial midfoot region of the midsole.
1 . An article of footwear, comprising:
an upper; and
a sole assembly connected to the upper, the sole assembly comprising a midsole with a variable stiffness that provides different stiffness gradients in different regions of the sole assembly,
wherein the midsole comprises a core piece and a perimeter piece surrounding the core piece, wherein the perimeter piece includes a recess for receiving the core piece, wherein the recess does not extend into a medial midfoot region of the midsole, wherein the perimeter piece comprises a firmer material than the core piece,
wherein the midsole is softer in a midfoot region of the sole assembly than in a heel region or a forefoot region of the sole assembly.
2 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the perimeter piece is thinner than the core piece in the heel region of the sole assembly, and wherein the core piece is thinner than the perimeter piece in the midfoot region of the sole assembly.
3 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the core piece is thicker in the forefoot region and the heel region of the sole assembly than in the midfoot region of the sole assembly.
4 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the recess has a greater depth in the heel region of the sole assembly than in the midfoot region of the sole assembly.
5 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the recess has a greater depth in a lateral midfoot region of the midsole than in the medial midfoot region of the midsole.
6 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the midsole is firmer in the heel region and the forefoot region of the sole assembly than in the midfoot region of the sole assembly.
7 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the core piece comprises a firmer material than the perimeter piece.
8 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the core piece or the perimeter piece comprises a soft foam material with an Asker® C hardness of about 35 to 50.
9 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the core piece or the perimeter piece comprises a firm foam material with an Asker® C hardness of about 55 to 70.
10 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the midsole comprises a firm foam material and a soft foam material, wherein the firm foam material is a first percentage of a total height of the midsole, and wherein the soft foam material is a second percentage of the total height of the midsole.
11 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the first percentage and the second percentage vary across the midsole to provide the midsole with a midfoot region having a different hardness than a forefoot region or a heel region of the midsole.
12 . The article of footwear of claim 11 , wherein the forefoot region or the heel region of the midsole is firmer than the midfoot region of the midsole.
13 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the firm foam material and the soft foam material differ in height (i) longitudinally between a forefoot region and a rear foot region of the article of footwear or (ii) laterally between a medial side and a lateral side of the article of footwear.
14 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the soft foam material comprises between about 55 to 100 percent of the total height of the midsole in regions of higher plantar pressure, and wherein the firm foam material comprises between about 55 to 100 percent of the total height of the midsole in regions of lower plantar pressure.
15 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the soft foam material is a higher percentage of a total height of the midsole than the firm foam material in a heel region and a forefoot region of the midsole, and wherein the firm foam material is a higher percentage of the total height of the midsole than the soft foam material in a midfoot region of the midsole.
16 . The article of footwear of claim 10 , wherein the firm foam material is a higher percentage of a total height of the midsole than the soft foam material in a heel region and a forefoot region of the midsole, and wherein the soft foam material is a higher percentage of the total height of the midsole than the firm foam material in a midfoot region of the midsole.
17 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the midsole has (i) a first region with a first height gradient between a first higher plantar pressure point and a first lower plantar pressure point and (ii) a second region with a second height gradient between a second higher plantar pressure point and a second lower plantar pressure point, wherein the first height gradient is more gradual than the second height gradient.
18 . The article of footwear of claim 17 , wherein the first height gradient and the second height gradient are non-linear.
19 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the perimeter piece and the core piece comprise multiple foam pieces with substructures for additional support.
20 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the midsole has a sloped profile with different portions that are angled to match a plantar aponeurosis of a subject's foot.
