Abstract

Tissue modification instruments. In some embodiments, the instrument may comprise a shaft extending along an axis. A tissue treatment tip may be positioned at a distal end of the shaft. The tissue treatment tip may comprise one or more energy delivery elements configured to deliver tissue-modification energy. The tissue treatment tip may comprise a non-branching tip that extends away from the axis to define a tissue treatment region that is wider than a width of the shaft. The tissue treatment tip may comprise a terminal end, which may be positioned at the distal end of the instrument in some embodiments or may be positioned proximal of the distal end of the instrument.

Claims (23)

1 . A tissue modification instrument for delivery of tissue-modification energy during a surgical procedure, comprising:

a shaft extending along an axis;

a tissue treatment tip at a distal end of the shaft, the tissue treatment tip comprising a plurality of discrete energy delivery elements facing an upper tissue plane and/or a plurality of discrete energy delivery elements facing a lower tissue plane and configured to deliver pulsed tissue-modification energy towards the upper and/or lower tissue planes, wherein each of the energy delivery elements comprises either a conical frustum having a recessed apical cavity or a cylindrical frustum having a recessed apical cavity, wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises a non-branching tip that comprises one or more bends that extend the tissue treatment tip away from the axis and one or more bends that extend the tissue treatment tip towards the axis to define a tissue treatment region that is wider than a width of the shaft, and wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises a terminal end.

2 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises an anfractuous tip.

3 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein a cross-sectional size of the tissue treatment tip is at least substantially identical to a cross-sectional size of at least a portion of the shaft extending along the axis adjacent to the tissue treatment tip.

4 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 3 , wherein a cross-sectional size of the tissue treatment tip is at least substantially identical to a cross-sectional size of the shaft along an entire length of the shaft.

5 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the one or more energy delivery elements comprises a plurality of discrete energy delivery termini.

6 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the one or more energy delivery elements is configured to deliver at least one of electrosurgical, LASER, intense pulse light, resistive heat, radiant heat, thermochromic, ultrasound, and microwave.

7 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises an upper surface, a lower surface, and opposing side surfaces, wherein the opposing side surfaces comprise one or bends, and wherein each of the one or more bends are smooth and lack any sharp points or edges.

8 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 7 , wherein the tissue treatment tip defines an at least substantially circular shape extending from the shaft.

9 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 7 , wherein the tissue treatment tip defines a shape having three at least substantially straight, interconnected segments defined by the tissue treatment tip with an opening between the terminal end and the shaft.

10 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 9 , wherein a corner between two adjacent segments of the three segments forms a distal tip of the tissue modification instrument.

11 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises a first set of energy delivery elements of a first polarity and a second set of energy delivery elements of a second polarity.

12 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 11 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises a first arm and a second arm positioned opposite from the first arm, wherein the first set of energy delivery elements is positioned on the first arm, and wherein the second set of energy delivery elements is positioned on the second arm.

13 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises a first portion spaced apart from a second portion, wherein the first portion comprises a first set of energy delivery elements, and wherein the second portion comprises a temperature sensor configured to sense a temperature of tissue treated using the first set of energy delivery elements.

14 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 13 , wherein the first portion is positioned on a first arm of the tissue treatment tip, wherein the second portion is positioned on a second arm of the tissue treatment tip, and wherein the first arm is spaced apart from the second arm.

15 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the terminal end is configured to be positioned through an entrance wound having an at least substantially identical length as a cross-sectional width of the terminal end.

16 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a space defined between the terminal end of the tissue treatment tip and a distal end of the shaft.

17 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises a cross-sectional perimeter that is at least substantially identical to a cross-sectional perimeter of the shaft.

18 . The tissue modification instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue treatment tip comprises:

a first bend that extends the tissue treatment tip away from the axis;

a second bend that extends the tissue treatment tip towards the axis; and

a third bend that extends the tissue treatment tip away from the axis and rearward towards a proximal end of the tissue modification instrument to define a tissue treatment region that is wider than a width of the shaft.
