Abstract

A surgical system having a surgical instrument having a connection portion including a connector connectable to a robot arm for mounting of the surgical instrument to the robot arm so that the instrument can be robotically manipulated by the robot arm to adjust a position of the instrument via a first communication from a remote central processing unit to the robot arm. A remotely actuated power pack is loadable into a compartment of the instrument for powering the instrument. The power pack has a first motor and a first engagement member operatively connected to the first motor and removably engageable with a first movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument, the power pack effecting movement of the first movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a first function of the instrument.

Claims (27)

1 . A surgical system comprising:

a surgical instrument having a distal portion, a connection portion, and a compartment, the connection portion including a connector connectable to a robot arm for mounting of the surgical instrument to the robot arm so that the instrument can be robotically manipulated by the robot arm to adjust the position of the instrument; and

a power pack loadable into the compartment of the instrument for powering the instrument, the power pack having a first motor and a first engagement member removably engageable with a first movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument, the power pack effecting movement of the first movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a first function of the instrument, the power pack communicating with a central processing unit remote from the Instrument, wherein the power pack controls both movement of the robot arm and movement of the first engagement member to effect the first function;

wherein the power pack includes a second motor and a second engagement member operatively connected to the second motor, wherein the second engagement member is removably engageable with a second movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the device to effect movement of the second movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a second function of the instrument.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the remote central processing unit selectively activates the first and second motors.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the power pack includes a third motor and a third engagement member operatively connected to the third motor and the third engagement member is removably engageable with a third movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument to effect movement of the third movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a third function of the instrument.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first function is articulation of the instrument.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first function is closing of jaws of the instrument to clamp tissue between the jaws.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the second function is firing a plurality of surgical fasteners supported in the instrument.

7 . A surgical stem comprising:

a power pack and a surgical instrument, the power pack having a connection portion connectable to a robot arm for mounting of the power pack to the robot arm, the power pack having a first motor and a first engagement member operatively connected to the first motor and removably engageable with a first movable member of the surgical instrument; and

the surgical instrument or the power pack, the power pack effecting movement of the first movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a first function of the instrument, the power pack communicating with a central processing unit remote from the instrument, wherein a position of the instrument is robotically manipulated by the robot arm to adjust the position of the instrument and the power pack controls movement of the first engagement member to effect the first function.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the power pack has a plurality of motors and a plurality of engagement members, each engagement member operatively connected to one of the motors to effect a different function of the instrument.

9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the system includes a plate connected to the robot arm, and the power pack is connected to the plate for connection to the robot arm.

10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the power pack includes a second motor and a second engagement member operatively connected to the second motor, wherein the second engagement member is removably engageable with a second movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument to effect movement of the second movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a second function of the instrument.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the power pack includes a third motor and a third engagement member operatively connected to the third motor, and the third engagement member is removably engageable with a third movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument to effect movement of the third movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a third function of the instrument.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first function is closing jaws of the instrument to clamp tissue and the second function is firing surgical fasteners of the instrument.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first function is articulation of the instrument and the second function is clamping tissue.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the first function is articulation of the instrument and the second function is firing surgical fasteners of the instrument.

15 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the robot arm is manipulated by a first communication from a remote central processing unit to the robot arm and the power pack has a second communication independent of the first communication for remote actuation of the power pack to control movement of the first engagement member.

16 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the first function is one of instrument articulation, closing jaws of the instrument to clamp tissue or firing surgical fasteners.

17 . A surgical system comprising:

a surgical instrument having a distal portion, a connection portion, and a compartment, the connection portion including a connector connectable to a movable arm for mounting of the surgical instrument to the movable arm so that the movable arm can be manipulated by a user to adjust a position of the instrument; and

a power pack loadable into the compartment of the instrument for powering the instrument, the power pack having a first motor and a first engagement member operatively connected to the first motor and removably engageable with a first movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument, the power pack effecting movement of the first movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a first function of the instrument, the power pack communicating with a remote central processing unit for remote actuation of the power pack.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the power pack includes a second motor and a second engagement member operatively connected to the second motor and, wherein the second engagement member is removably engageable with a second movable member of the instrument when the power pack is loaded into the instrument to effect movement of the second movable member from a first position to a second position to effect a second function of the instrument.
