Abstract

Compositions comprise an amount of cinnamaldehyde that is orally tolerable, thus avoiding an unpleasant mouth feeling, and also tolerable in the gastrointestinal tract. The cinnamaldehyde is supplemented by zinc, and the combination can be effective to increase at least one of energy expenditure, sympathetic nervous system activity, or fat oxidation. The composition comprising the combination of cinnamaldehyde and zinc can be used in a method to support weight management or promote weight loss, a method for preventing obesity or overweight, and a method for treating obesity or overweight. The composition can improve one or more of insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, cognitive performance, cognition, mood or memory. The composition can achieve a therapeutic effect selected from the group consisting of blood vessel dilation, reduced blood pressure, increased delivery of blood flow to tissues in the body, stimulation of protein synthesis, increased release of growth factors, enhanced immune function, and combinations thereof.

Claims (13)

1 . A method for treating hypertension in an elderly individual in need thereof by increasing TRPA1 activity in the elderly individual, the method comprising administering to the elderly individual a food product comprising cinnamaldehyde and zinc,

the food product is selected from the group consisting of a beverage, a cereal bar, a dairy bar, a soup, a breakfast cereal, muesli, a cookie, a biscuit, a cracker, a dairy product, a capsule, a pastille and a liquid,

wherein the cinnamaldehyde is present in the food product at a flavouring concentration from 31.87 ppm to 350 ppm,

the cinnamaldehyde and the zinc are present in the food product at a cinnamaldehyde:zinc ratio of 1:0.03 to 1:0.005, and

the elderly individual has a chronological age of 65 years or older.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the food product is administered to the elderly individual at least once a day for at least one week.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the food product is administered to the elderly individual in an effective amount to reducing a risk and/or a severity of hypertension in the elderly individual.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the food product further comprises a component selected from the group consisting of protein, carbohydrate, fat and combinations thereof.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the food product consists essentially of the cinnamaldehyde and the zinc.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the zinc is in a form selected from the group consisting of zinc chloride, zinc sulfate, zinc lactate, zinc citrate and mixtures thereof.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the cinnamaldehyde: zinc ratio is 1:0.03.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the food product is administered to the elderly individual at least once a day for at least one month.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the food product is administered to the elderly individual at least once a day for at least one year.
