Abstract

Disclosed are self-expanding medical implants for placement within a lumen of a patient. The implants comprise a woven or non-woven structure having a substantially tubular configuration, and are designed to be low-profile such that they are deliverable with a small diameter catheter. The implants have a high recoverability and desired mechanical properties.

Claims (31)

1 . An implant, comprising:

i) a therapeutic agent contained within one or more polymeric strands and a salt incorporated within at least one of said one or more polymeric strands; and

ii) an elastomeric polymeric coating at least partially coating said one or more polymeric strands, said coating conforming to the shape of the individual strands and when compressed applies a force in favor of radial expansion.

2 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein said elastomeric polymeric coating comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(lactic acid-co-caprolactone) (PLCL), poly(glycolide-co-caprolactone) (PGCL), and poly(lactic acid-co-dioxanone) (PLDO), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(p-dioxanone) (PDO), certain homopolymers such as poly trimethylene carbonate (PTMC), and copolymers and terpolymers thereof.

3 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein said one or more polymeric strands further comprise a plasticizer.

4 . The implant of claim 3 , wherein said plasticizer comprises polyethylene glycol (PEG).

5 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein said salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, or a barium salt.

6 . An implant, comprising:

i) a structure comprising one or more polymeric monofilaments and a salt; and

ii) a thermoset elastomer at least partially coating said one or more polymeric monofilaments, said thermoset elastomer comprising crosslinks.

7 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein said implant is a tubular structure.

8 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein said implant is woven.

9 . The implant of claim 6 , wherein said implant is adapted for placement in a lumen of a subject.

10 . A method of delivering an implant comprising:

a. providing;

i) an implant comprising a therapeutic agent contained within one or more polymeric strands and a salt incorporated within at least one of said one or more polymeric strands,

ii) an elastomeric polymeric coating at least partially coating said one or more polymeric strands, said coating conforming to the shape of the individual strands and when compressed applies a force in favor of radial expansion; and

b. placing said implant in contact with a lumen of a body, such that said therapeutic agent is eluted over time.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, or a barium salt.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said elastomeric polymeric coating comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(lactic acid-co-caprolactone) (PLCL), poly(glycolide-co-caprolactone) (PGCL), and poly(lactic acid-co-dioxanone) (PLDO), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(p-dioxanone) (PDO), certain homopolymers such as poly trimethylene carbonate (PTMC), and copolymers and terpolymers thereof.

13 . A method of delivering an implant comprising:

a. providing;

i) an implant comprising one or more polymeric monofilaments, a therapeutic agent and a salt;

ii) a thermoset elastomer at least partially coating said one or more polymeric monofilaments, said thermoset elastomer comprising crosslinks; and

b. placing said implant in contact with a lumen of a body, such that said therapeutic agent is eluted over time.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein said salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate.

15 . An implant, comprising:

i) a plurality of individual polymeric strands making up a framework;

ii) a therapeutic agent contained within said polymeric strands and a salt incorporated within at least one of said one or more polymeric strands; and

iii) an elastomeric polymeric coating that conforms to the shape of said individual polymeric strands and does not cover the framework of the implant.

16 . The implant of claim 15 , wherein said salt is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate.
