Abstract

An article comprising: a carrier ( 12 ), activatable material ( 14 ) disposed on the carrier, one or more carrier extensions ( 16 ) extending from the carrier; wherein the article is adapted to provide sealing, baffling, or reinforcement within a structure's cavity.

Claims (46)

1 . An article comprising:

a) a carrier having a first end and a second end, the carrier comprising:

i) a first surface opposing a second surface;

ii) a central portion between the first end and the second end which forms a main body of the carrier;

iii) one or more fasteners integrally formed with the central portion and which project away from the central portion, wherein the one or more fasteners extend from the second surface;

iv) a plurality of extensions integrally formed with the central portion and which project away from the central portion in a same direction as the one or more fasteners and extend from the second surface;

b) an activatable material disposed on at least the first surface at the central portion of the carrier, while the one or more fasteners and the plurality of extensions are free of the activatable material;

wherein the first surface of the carrier is free of the one or more fasteners and the plurality of extensions projecting therefrom;

wherein each of the one or more fasteners is flanked by two or more of the plurality of extensions, and each of the one or more fasteners has a longitudinal axis that is parallel and offset from a longitudinal axis of each of the two or more of the plurality of extensions which it is flanked by;

wherein the longitudinal axis of the one or more fasteners extends from the second surface of the carrier toward an end of the one or more fasteners configured for insertion into one or more openings formed in a structure's cavity;

wherein the plurality of extensions are longitudinally spaced apart from the one or more fasteners along the carrier, such that the plurality of extensions do not come into contact with the one or more fasteners;

wherein the plurality of extensions have a height shorter than a height of the one or more fasteners, and wherein the height of each extension of the plurality of extensions is substantially equal; and

wherein the article is adapted to provide sealing, baffling, or reinforcement within the structure's cavity.

2 . The article of claim 1 , wherein one or more other extensions are integral with the central portion of the carrier, project from the first surface, and extend into the activatable material.

3 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the carrier is flexible.

4 . The article of claim 1 , wherein portions of the carrier are located in different planes from one another.

5 . The article of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more fasteners is located in a differing, non-parallel plane from at least another of the one or more fasteners.

6 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the activatable material extends beyond the first end, the second end, or both the first end and the second end of the carrier.

7 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the activatable material is located on both the first surface and the second surface of the carrier.

8 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the second surface is free of the activatable material.

9 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the carrier includes one or more hinges formed therein to impart flexibility to the carrier.

10 . The article of claim 9 , wherein the activatable material includes a break therein such that the carrier is free of the activatable material at the one or more hinges.

11 . The article of claim 1 , wherein the one or more fasteners include two or more fasteners.

12 . The article of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of extensions includes four or more extensions, with each of the two or more fasteners being flanked by at least two of the four or more extensions.

13 . An article comprising:

a) a carrier having a first end and a second end, the carrier comprising:

i) a first surface opposing a second surface;

ii) a central portion between the first end and the second end which forms a main body of the carrier;

iii) one or more fasteners integrally formed with the central portion and which project away from the central portion, wherein the one or more fasteners extend from the second surface;

iv) a plurality of extensions integrally formed with the central portion and which project away from the central portion in a same direction as the one or more fasteners and extend from the second surface;

v) a plurality of other extensions integrally formed with the central portion and which project away from the central portion in an opposite direction as the one or more fasteners and extend from the first surface;

b) an activatable material disposed on at least the first surface at the central portion of the carrier, while the one or more fasteners and the plurality of extensions are free of the activatable material;

wherein the plurality of other extensions are embedded in the active material;

wherein the first surface is free of the one or more fasteners and the plurality of extensions projecting therefrom;

wherein each of the one or more fasteners is flanked by two or more of the plurality of extensions, and each of the one or more fasteners has a longitudinal axis that is parallel and offset from a longitudinal axis of each of the two or more of the plurality of extensions which it is flanked by;

wherein the longitudinal axis of the one or more fasteners extends from the second surface of the carrier toward an end of the one or more fasteners configured for insertion into one or more openings formed in a structure's cavity;

wherein the plurality of extensions are longitudinally spaced apart from the one or more fasteners along the carrier, such that the plurality of extensions do not come into contact with the one or more fasteners;

wherein the plurality of extensions have a height shorter than a height of the one or more fasteners, and wherein the height of each extension of the plurality of extensions is substantially equal; and

wherein the article is adapted to provide sealing, baffling, or reinforcement within the structure's cavity.

14 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the carrier is flexible.

15 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the activatable material extends beyond the first end, the second end, or both the first end and the second end of the carrier.

16 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the activatable material is located on both the first surface and the second surface of the carrier.

17 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the second surface is free of the activatable material.

18 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the one or more fasteners include two or more fasteners.

19 . The article of claim 18 , wherein the plurality of extensions includes four or more extensions, with each of the two or more fasteners being flanked by at least two of the four or more extensions.

20 . The article of claim 13 , wherein the activatable material wraps about the first end, the second end, or both of the carrier.
