Remote hydraulic valve control system
A remote hydraulic system for controlling a valve of a wellhead or frac manifold includes a remote hydraulic skid, control skid, and power supply skid. The remote hydraulic skid includes a hydraulic reservoir, a hydraulic pump, an accumulator, a hydraulic manifold operatively coupled to the accumulator, and a hydraulic valve operatively coupled to the hydraulic manifold. The hydraulic valve is operatively coupled to the valve of the wellhead or frac manifold by a hydraulic line. The control skid includes an interface and is operatively coupled to the remote hydraulic skid. The power supply skid is coupled to the remote hydraulic skid to provide the power necessary to drive the hydraulic pump on the remote hydraulic skid. The remote hydraulic skid is positioned within a hazardous zone around the wellhead, while the control skid and power supply skid are positioned outside of the hazardous zone.
1 . A hydraulic system, comprising:
a hydraulic skid, wherein the hydraulic skid is configured to be positioned within a threshold distance from a well that defines a hazardous zone and comprises:
a hydraulic manifold configured to receive hydraulic fluid pumped from a supply reservoir;
a first control valve fluidly connected between the hydraulic manifold and an opening fluid port on a hydraulic valve in a frac tree, a frac manifold, or a wellhead assembly that is fluidly connected to the well; and
a second control valve fluidly connected between the hydraulic manifold and a closing fluid port on the hydraulic valve in the frac tree or the wellhead assembly that is fluidly connected to the well;
a power supply skid configured to be positioned outside of the threshold distance from the well and to supply power to pump hydraulic fluid from the supply reservoir to the hydraulic manifold on the hydraulic skid, wherein the power supply skid comprises the supply reservoir and a supply pump configured to pump hydraulic fluid from the supply reservoir to the hydraulic manifold on the hydraulic skid;
a return pump, wherein:
the hydraulic skid comprises a return reservoir configured to store hydraulic fluid returned from the opening fluid port on the hydraulic valve, the closing fluid port of the hydraulic valve, or both; and
the return pump is configured to pump hydraulic fluid from the return reservoir on the hydraulic skid to the supply reservoir on the power supply skid; and
a control skid configured to be:
positioned outside of the threshold distance from the well;
operatively coupled to the first control valve on the hydraulic skid to enable the control skid to control supply of hydraulic fluid to the opening fluid port on the hydraulic valve via the first control valve; and
operatively coupled to the second control valve on the hydraulic skid to enable the control skid to control supply of hydraulic fluid to the closing fluid port on the hydraulic valve via the second control valve.
2 . The hydraulic system of claim 1 , wherein the control skid is configured to:
open the first control valve on the hydraulic skid such that the hydraulic manifold is fluidly connected to the opening fluid port on the hydraulic valve to facilitate transitioning the hydraulic valve toward an open state; and
open the second control valve on the hydraulic skid such that the hydraulic manifold is fluidly connected to the closing fluid port on the hydraulic valve to facilitate transitioning the hydraulic valve toward a closed state.
3 . The hydraulic system of claim 1 , wherein the supply pump on the power supply skid is configured to be fluidly connected to the hydraulic manifold on the hydraulic skid via a single fluid conduit.
4 . The hydraulic system of claim 1 , wherein the control skid comprises:
an electronic display configured to display a graphical user interface that presents a visual indication of a current state of the hydraulic valve; and
a user input device configured to enable an operator to instruct the hydraulic system to transition the hydraulic valve from the current state to a target state.
5 . The hydraulic system of claim 4 , wherein the electronic display is configured to:
identify the hydraulic valve with a first color when the hydraulic valve is in an open state; and
identify the hydraulic valve with a second color when the hydraulic valve is in a closed state.
6 . The hydraulic system of claim 1 , wherein the threshold distance extends between 25 and 150 feet from the well.
7 . The hydraulic system of claim 1 , wherein the hazardous zone is identified as a Class I or Class II location as defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC).
8 . A method, comprising:
positioning a hydraulic skid within a threshold distance from a well;
fluidly connecting a control valve on the hydraulic skid to a fluid port on a hydraulic valve in a frac tree, a frac manifold, or a wellhead assembly that is fluidly connected to the well;
positioning a power supply skid outside of the threshold distance from the well;
operatively coupling the power supply skid to the hydraulic skid to enable the power supply skid to power a supply pump to pump hydraulic fluid from a supply reservoir to a hydraulic manifold on the hydraulic skid, wherein the control valve on the hydraulic skid is fluidly connected between hydraulic manifold and the fluid port on the hydraulic valve, positioning the power supply skid outside of the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the supply reservoir and the supply pump outside of the threshold distance from the well, and operatively coupling the power supply skid to the hydraulic skid comprises fluidly coupling the supply pump on the power supply skid to the hydraulic manifold on the hydraulic skid via a fluid conduit;
positioning a return pump outside of the threshold distance from the well, wherein positioning the hydraulic skid within the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning a return reservoir within the threshold distance from the well;
fluidly coupling the fluid port on the hydraulic valve, another fluid port on the hydraulic valve, or both to the return reservoir on the hydraulic skid;
fluidly coupling the return pump between the return reservoir on the hydraulic skid and the supply reservoir on the power supply skid to enable the return pump to return hydraulic fluid from the return reservoir to the supply reservoir;
positioning a control skid outside of the threshold distance from the well; and
operatively coupling the control skid to the control valve on the hydraulic skid to enable the control skid to control supply of hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic manifold to the fluid port on the hydraulic valve and, thus, transitioning of the hydraulic valve between an open state and a closed state.
9 . The method of claim 8 , comprising fluidly connecting another control valve on the hydraulic skid between the hydraulic manifold and another fluid port on the hydraulic valve or another hydraulic valve in the frac tree, the frac manifold, or the wellhead assembly.
10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein:
positioning the hydraulic skid within the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the hydraulic skid within 25 feet of the well;
positioning the power supply skid outside of the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the power supply skid more than 25 feet from the well; and
positioning the control skid outside of the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the control skid more than 25 feet from the well.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein:
positioning the hydraulic skid within the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the hydraulic skid within a Class I or Class II location as defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC);
positioning the power supply skid outside of the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the power supply skid outside of the Class I or Class II location; and
positioning the control skid outside of the threshold distance from the well comprises positioning the control skid outside of the Class I or Class II location.
12 . A hydraulic system, comprising:
a hydraulic skid configured to be disposed within a threshold distance from a well, wherein the hydraulic skid comprises:
a control valve that is configured to be fluidly coupled to a first fluid port on a hydraulic valve in a frac tree, a frac tree, or a wellhead assembly that is fluidly connected to the well; and
a return reservoir configured to receive hydraulic fluid from the first fluid port on the hydraulic valve or a second fluid port on the hydraulic valve;
a power supply skid configured to be positioned outside of the threshold distance from the well, wherein the power supply skid comprises:
a supply reservoir having an input coupled to an output of the return reservoir to receive hydraulic fluid from the return reservoir; and
a supply pump fluidly coupled between the supply reservoir and the control valve on the hydraulic skid, wherein the supply pump is configured to pump hydraulic fluid from the supply reservoir to the control valve; and
a control skid configured to be:
positioned outside of the threshold distance from the well; and
operatively coupled to the control valve on the hydraulic skid to enable the control skid to control supply of hydraulic fluid to the first fluid port on the hydraulic valve.
13 . The hydraulic system of claim 12 , wherein the hydraulic skid comprises:
a hydraulic manifold fluidly connected between the supply pump on the power supply skid and the control valve; and
another control valve fluidly connected between the hydraulic manifold and the second fluid port on the hydraulic valve, wherein:
the hydraulic manifold is configured to distribute hydraulic fluid received from the supply pump on the power supply skid between the control valve and the another control valve;
the control valve is configured to supply hydraulic fluid received from the hydraulic manifold to the first fluid port on the hydraulic valve to facilitate transitioning the hydraulic valve toward an open state; and
the another control valve is configured to supply hydraulic fluid received from the hydraulic manifold to the second fluid port on the hydraulic valve to facilitate transitioning the hydraulic valve toward a closed state.
