Abstract

A method for forming a passage in a ceramic matrix composite component incudes forming a core for a ceramic matrix composite component; embedding a hollow member into the core at a desired location for a passage in the ceramic matrix composite component; wrapping the core with a ceramic material; and inserting a rod through the hollow member and into the core.

Claims (7)

1 . A ceramic matrix composite component, comprising:

a ceramic material in which a cooling passage is cast, wherein the ceramic material comprises at least one layer of ceramic material, and wherein the cooling passage is cast transverse to and through the at least one layer of the ceramic material and through a separation of a plurality of unbroken ceramic fibers of the ceramic material.

2 . The ceramic matrix composite component as recited in claim 1 , wherein the ceramic matrix composite component is an airfoil of a gas turbine engine.

3 . The ceramic matrix composite component as recited in claim 2 , wherein the ceramic material forms a wall of the airfoil.

4 . The ceramic matrix composite component as recited in claim 1 , wherein a circumference of the cooling passage is defined by the unbroken ceramic fibers of the ceramic material.

5 . The ceramic matrix composite components as recited in claim 1 , wherein the ceramic fibers are selected from the group consisting of fibers of alumina, mullite, silicon carbide, silicon, zirconia or carbon.

6 . The ceramic matrix composite components as recited in claim 1 , wherein the cooling passage is arranged at an angle of about 45 degrees with respect to the at least one layer of ceramic material.
