Abstract

A method of securing a pipe in a hanger includes supporting the pipe with a suspension member; inserting a threaded rod through the suspension member; placing a lock tab washer on the threaded rod; threading a nut on the threaded rod; preventing the lock tab washer from rotating with respect to the suspension member by folding a first tab of the lock tab washer over a side edge of the suspension member; and preventing the nut from rotating with respect to the lock tab washer by folding a second tab of the lock tab washer over a circumferential side of the nut.

Claims (18)

1 . A method of securing a pipe in a hanger, the method comprising:

supporting the pipe with a suspension member comprising an upper clevis and a lower clevis joined to the upper clevis by a threaded rod;

inserting the threaded rod horizontally through the upper clevis and the lower clevis;

placing a lock tab washer on the threaded rod such that the threaded rod extends through a washer hole of the lock tab washer, the lock tab washer defining a first tab and a second tab, the first tab and the second tab provided along a common longitudinal axis;

threading a nut on the threaded rod;

preventing the lock tab washer from rotating with respect to the suspension member by folding the first tab of the lock tab washer over a side edge of the suspension member, wherein folding the first tab of the lock tab washer over the side edge of the suspension member comprises folding the first tab over a side edge of the upper clevis and a side edge of the lower clevis; and

preventing the nut from rotating with respect to the lock tab washer by folding the second tab of the lock tab washer about a fold line proximal to a relief notch over a circumferential side of the nut;

wherein the first tab has a width greater than a diameter of the washer hole, and the second tab has a width less than the diameter of the washer hole.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein threading the nut on the threaded rod further comprises tightening the nut against the lock tab washer to sandwich the lock tab washer between the nut and an outer surface of the suspension member.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein sandwiching the lock tab washer between the nut and the outer surface of the suspension member comprises sandwiching the lock tab washer between the nut and an outer surface of the upper clevis.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein when folded the first tab and the second tab are oriented perpendicular to at least one surface of the suspension member.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the lock tab washer is sized to be seen from a floor when the hanger is suspended from a ceiling.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first tab is distal to the second tab across the washer hole, the first and the second tabs extending in opposite directions from the washer hole.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the lock tab washer is symmetric about the common longitudinal axis extending between the first tab and the second tab, and through the washer hole.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first tab and the second tab extend in opposite directions relative to each other, and wherein the washer hole is formed through the lock tab washer, and is arranged on a plane perpendicular to each of the first tab and the second tab, when the first tab and the second tab are folded.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the relief notch defines a recessed and curvilinear edge joining a shoulder of the lock tab washer with an edge of the second tab.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first tab defines a first end of the lock tab washer and the second tab defines a second end of the lock tab washer, and wherein each of the first end and the second end is curvilinear.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the lock tab washer is covered in plastisol.
