UWB-based intent detection for seamless access
A method according to an embodiment includes receiving UWB data by an access control device, performing predictive analysis on the UWB data to generate expected location data associated with a location of a mobile device, determining a velocity of the mobile device and a heading of the mobile device based on the UWB data, determining whether the mobile device is on course to a passageway associated with the access control device based on the velocity and the heading of the mobile device, performing state estimation to determine whether the mobile device is within a secure distance threshold from the passageway, wherein the secure distance threshold dynamically changes based on the velocity of the mobile device, and inferring ingress intent of a user of the mobile device in response to determining that the mobile device is within the secure distance threshold and on course to the passageway.
1 . A method, comprising:
receiving, from an ultra wideband (UWB) subsystem of an access control device, UWB data indicative of a distance of a mobile device from the access control device and an angle of arrival of a UWB signal from the mobile device, wherein the access control device comprises a light display positioned on an outer surface of the access control device and having a plurality of light segments;
performing, by the access control device, predictive analysis on the UWB data to generate expected location data associated with a location of the mobile device;
determining, by the access control device, a velocity of the mobile device and a heading of the mobile device based on the UWB data;
determining, by the access control device, whether the mobile device is on course to a dynamic target associated with a passageway secured by the access control device based on the velocity and the heading of the mobile device, wherein a width of the dynamic target is a function of a velocity of the mobile device and an angle of the mobile device relative to a center of the dynamic target;
performing, by the access control device, state estimation to determine whether the mobile device is within a secure distance threshold from the passageway, wherein the secure distance threshold dynamically changes based on the velocity of the mobile device;
inferring, by the access control device, ingress intent of a user of the mobile device in response to determining that the mobile device is within the secure distance threshold and on course to the passageway;
selecting, by the access control device, a number of the plurality of light segments to illuminate based on the distance of the mobile device from the access control device; and
illuminating, by the access control device, the selected number of light segments.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising calibrating the UWB data with a distance offset and an angle calibration.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising filtering the UWB data to remove burst noise.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the velocity of the mobile device comprises determining an average velocity of the mobile device.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the velocity of the mobile device comprising determining the velocity of the mobile device based on historical location data calculated for the mobile device.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the UWB data comprises signal noise ratio (SNR) data and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) data, and further comprising:
adapting a filter response of at least one of a dead reckoning filter or a path prediction filter based on the SNR data and the NLOS data; and
applying the at least one of the dead reckoning filter or the path prediction filter to generate the expected location data.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a Kalman filter to detect outlier data in the UWB data and removing the outlier data from the UWB data to generate filtered UWB data; and
wherein performing the predictive analysis on the UWB data to generate the expected location data comprises performing the predictive analysis on the filtered UWB data to generate the expected location data.
8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a Kalman filter to detect outlier data in the UWB data and replacing the outlier data in the UWB data with predicted data to generate filtered UWB data; and
wherein performing the predictive analysis on the UWB data to generate the expected location data comprises performing the predictive analysis on the filtered UWB data to generate the expected location data.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the velocity of the mobile device comprises determining a historical average velocity of the mobile device stored in association with a MAC address of the mobile device.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein inferring ingress intent of the user of the mobile device further comprises determining whether the mobile device has maintained a consistent heading toward the passageway for at least a threshold period of time elapsed.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein inferring ingress intent of the user of the mobile device further comprises determining whether the mobile device has maintained a consistent heading toward the passageway for at least a threshold distance traversed by the mobile device.
12 . An access control device, comprising:
an ultra wideband (UWB) subsystem configured to perform a ranging session with a mobile device and generate UWB data indicative of a distance of the mobile device from the access control device and an angle of arrival of a UWB signal from the mobile device;
a light display positioned on an outer surface of the access control device and having a plurality of light segments;
a processor; and
a memory comprising a plurality of instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by the processor, causes the processor to:
receive the UWB data from the UWB subsystem;
perform predictive analysis on the UWB data to generate expected location data associated with a location of the mobile device;
determine a velocity of the mobile device and a heading of the mobile device based on the UWB data;
determine whether the mobile device is on course to a dynamic target associated with a passageway secured by the access control device based on the velocity and the heading of the mobile device, wherein a width of the dynamic target is a function of a velocity of the mobile device and an angle of the mobile device relative to a center of the dynamic target;
perform state estimation to determine whether the mobile device is within a secure distance threshold from the passageway, wherein the secure distance threshold dynamically changes based on the velocity of the mobile device;
infer ingress intent of a user of the mobile device in response to determining that the mobile device is within the secure distance threshold and on course to the passageway;
select a number of the plurality of light segments to illuminate based on the distance of the mobile device from the access control device; and
illuminate the selected number of light segments.
13 . The access control device of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the processor to calibrate the UWB data with a distance offset and an angle calibration.
14 . The access control device of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the processor to filter the UWB data to remove burst noise.
15 . The access control device of claim 12 , wherein to determine the velocity of the mobile device comprises to determine an average velocity of the mobile device.
16 . The access control device of claim 12 , wherein to determine the velocity of the mobile device comprising to determine the velocity of the mobile device based on historical location data calculated for the mobile device.
17 . The access control device of claim 12 , further comprising a lock mechanism configured to unlock in response to inferred ingress intent of the user.
18 . The access control device of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of instructions further causes the processor to:
select a color of illumination for the light-ring segments based on whether the angle of arrival of the UWB signal from the mobile device is within a predefined angle threshold; and
illuminate the selected number of light-ring segments with the selected color of illumination.
19 . A method, comprising:
receiving, from an ultra wideband (UWB) subsystem of a mobile device, UWB data indicative of a distance of the mobile device to an access control device and an angle of arrival of a UWB signal from the access control device, wherein the access control device comprises a light display positioned on an outer surface of the access control device and having a plurality of light segments;
performing, by the mobile device, predictive analysis on the UWB data to generate expected location data associated with a location of the mobile device relative to the access control device;
determining, by the mobile device, a velocity of the mobile device and a heading of the mobile device based on the UWB data;
determining, by the mobile device, whether the mobile device is on course to a dynamic target associated with a passageway secured by the access control device based on the velocity and the heading of the mobile device, wherein a width of the dynamic target is a function of a velocity of the mobile device and an angle of the mobile device relative to a center of the dynamic target;
performing, by the mobile device, state estimation to determine whether the mobile device is within a secure distance threshold from the passageway, wherein the secure distance threshold dynamically changes based on the velocity of the mobile device;
inferring, by the mobile device, ingress intent of a user of the mobile device in response to determining that the mobile device is within the secure distance threshold and on course to the passageway;
select a number of the plurality of light segments to illuminate based on the distance of the mobile device from the access control device; and
illuminate the selected number of light segments.
