Abstract

A mechanical controller provides four-axis control of a vehicle's position and movement. For example, the controller provides control of a vehicle's operations through a lateral axis, longitudinal axis, directional axis, and a grip axis (e.g., operating a thumbwheel of the mechanical controller that provides additional control inputs to the vehicle). The mechanical controller can provide independent force feel mechanisms in each of the lateral, longitudinal, and directional axes of movement. Additionally, the mechanical controller may provide a redundant force feel mechanism (e.g., for increased safety). For example, redundant springs and dampers may be incorporated in each axis's force feel mechanism. The mechanical controller may include a plunger and spring assembly to provide a force feel mechanism in the lateral and longitudinal axes. In addition to this spring force, surfaces of a contact region between the plunger and a plunger actuating plate may be shaped to produce force feel characteristics.

Claims (40)

1 . A system comprising:

a shaft;

a gimbal including support bearings that hold the shaft, the gimbal configured to allow the shaft to move about a longitudinal axis and a lateral axis; and

a force feedback structure coupled to the gimbal, the force feedback structure comprising:

a first plate and a second plate configured to contact each other, the first plate being coupled to the shaft and the second plate being coupled to a spring assembly that presses the plates together, wherein movement of the shaft changes the location where the plates contact each other, and shapes of the plates generate resistances for movement of the shaft about the longitudinal axis and the lateral axis, the first plate comprising:

a depression or slot in a central region of the first plate, the depression or slot generating a zero-force null position of the shaft;

a first slot extending along the lateral axis and away from the central region of the first plate;

a second slot extending along the longitudinal axis and away from the central region of the first plate; and

regions that curve away from the first slot, the second slot, and the second plate, wherein the shapes of the first slot, the second slot, and the regions generate resistances against shaft movements away from the zero-force null position of the shaft.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second plate is flat.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first slot extends from proximal to distal from the central region of the first plate.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the second slot extends from proximal to distal from the central region of the first plate.

5 . A system comprising:

a shaft;

a gimbal including support bearings that hold the shaft, the gimbal configured to allow the shaft to move about a first axis and a second axis; and

a force feedback structure coupled to the gimbal, the force feedback structure comprising:

a first plate and a second plate configured to contact each other, one of the plates being coupled to the shaft and the other of the plates being coupled to a spring assembly that presses the plates together, the first plate having edges that curve away from the second plate, wherein movement of the shaft changes the location where the plates contact each other, and shapes of the plates generate resistance for movement of the shaft about the first axis and the second axis,

wherein the first plate further comprises a first slot extending along the first axis.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein shapes of the plates generate (a) a zero-force null position of the shaft and (b) a plurality of resistances against shaft movements away from the zero-force null position.

7 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the second plate is flat.

8 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first plate further comprises a depression or slot in a central region of the first plate.

9 . The system of claim 5 , wherein a width of the first slot along the first axis remains constant from proximal to distal from a central region of the first plate.

10 . The system of claim 5 , wherein a width of the first slot along the first axis narrows from proximal to distal from a central region of the first plate.

11 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first plate further comprises a second slot extending along the second axis.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein a width of the second slot along the second axis remains constant from proximal to distal from a central region of the first plate.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the first plate further comprises a region between the first slot and the second slot that curves away from the first slot and the second slot.

14 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first axis is a longitudinal axis and the second axis is a lateral axis and the first plate includes a breakout area comprising:

a central flat region that is flat along the longitudinal axis and the lateral axis;

a lateral flat region that is flat along the lateral axis; and

a longitudinal flat region that is flat along the longitudinal axis.

15 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first plate is coupled to the shaft and the second plate is coupled to the spring assembly.

16 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the first axis is a longitudinal axis and the second axis is a lateral axis.

17 . A system comprising:

a shaft;

a gimbal configured to allow the shaft to move about a first axis and a second axis; and

a first plate and a second plate configured to contact each other, one of the plates being coupled to the shaft and the other of the plates being coupled to a spring assembly that presses the plates together, the first plate having edges that curve away from the second plate, wherein movement of the shaft changes the location where the plates contact each other,

wherein the first plate further comprises a first slot extending along the first axis.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the first plate further comprises a depression or slot in a central region of the first plate.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the first plate further comprises a second slot extending along the second axis.

20 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the first axis is a longitudinal axis and the second axis is a lateral axis.
