Abstract

A computer-implemented system and method for managing and visualizing financial transaction data is disclosed. Rows of financial data are managed as data objects with a reorganizable node tree hierarchy. A user interface visualization system supports an interactive user interface with a client device. In some implementations, a user may reorganize the node hierarchy, define dimension, communicate on a node-based basis, and assign directly responsible individuals to nodes.

Claims (29)

1 . A computer implemented method, comprising:

managing financial data as a set of nodes, in which each node is a data object representing at least one row of a sequence of cells of financial data in which each node has a data structure with node attributes describing a reorganizable tree hierarchy of nodes, wherein the financial data is stored as the set of nodes, wherein individual cells of the sequence of cells are not stored as separate data objects;

generating a user interface visualization representing rows of the financial data based on an initial node tree hierarchy, wherein each row comprises a temporal sequence of at least three numerical values for respective timesteps;

modifying the user interface visualization representing rows of the financial data in response to a user input and implementing a corresponding reorganization of an initial hierarchy of nodes to a reorganized node tree hierarchy including a first set of nodes for rows of financial data corresponding to income and expense and a second set of nodes for rows of financial data corresponding to a balance sheet view of cash value that includes cash balances and assets;

detecting a mouseover event corresponding to a cursor hovering over a cell value displayed within the user interface visualization;

in response to detecting the mouseover event, determining a differential contribution value indicating a differential contribution of the cell value to a derived financial metric;

automatically displaying a pop-up window within the user interface visualization, wherein the pop-up window comprises the differential contribution value, wherein the pop-up window is positioned adjacent to the cell; and

automatically removing the pop-up window from the user interface visualization when the cursor is no longer hovering over the cell value.

2 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the reorganized node tree hierarchy implements a change to an order of rows of financial data.

3 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the reorganized node tree hierarchy implements a change to a grouping of rows of financial data.

4 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the node attributes comprise node hierarchy attributes.

5 . The computer implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the node attributes further comprise node dimensions, and the method further comprises generating a custom node dimension based on a user input.

6 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising defining node access control and permissions defining which nodes in the node hierarchy are accessible by different categories of users and actions each category of users is permitted to perform on each node.

7 . A system, comprising: a processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed, cause the system to perform operations including:

managing financial data as a set of nodes, in which each node is a data object representing at least one row of a sequence of cells of financial data in which each node has a data structure with node attributes describing a reorganizable tree hierarchy of nodes comprising a first set of nodes for rows of financial data corresponding to income and expense and a second set of nodes for rows of financial data corresponding to a balance sheet view of cash value that includes cash balances and assets, wherein the financial data is stored in the memory as the set of nodes, wherein individual cells of the sequence of cells are not stored in the memory as separate data objects;

generating a user interface visualization representing rows of the financial data based on an initial node tree hierarchy, wherein each row comprises a temporal sequence of at least three numerical values for respective timesteps;

modifying the user interface visualization representing rows of the financial data in response to a user input and implementing a corresponding reorganization of an initial hierarchy of nodes to a reorganized node tree hierarchy, the visualization comprising a first set of nodes for rows of financial data corresponding to a profit based on income and expenses and a second set of nodes for rows of financial data corresponding to a balance sheet view of cash value that comprises cash balances and assets;

detecting a mouseover event corresponding to a cursor hovering over a cell value displayed within the user interface visualization;

in response to detecting the mouseover event, determining a differential contribution value indicating a differential contribution of the cell value to a derived financial metric;

automatically displaying a pop-up window within the user interface visualization, wherein the pop-up window comprises the differential contribution value, wherein the pop-up window is positioned adjacent to the cell; and

automatically removing the pop-up window from the user interface visualization when the cursor is no longer hovering over the cell value.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein modifying the user interface visualization in response to a user input comprises generating a modified visualization displaying a new grouping of rows of financial data displaying a custom dimension.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the user input comprises the user dragging and dropping rows into a new order in the visualization.

10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein node access controls and permissions define which nodes in the node hierarchy are accessible by different categories of users and actions that each category of users is permitted to perform on each node, the method further comprising customizing the node access controls and permissions.

11 . The system of claim 7 , further comprising receiving a user input to perform at least one of expanding a node, collapsing a node, or moving a node and implementing a corresponding action in the visualization.

12 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the user input to modify the visualization by a node dimension comprises at least one of grouping nodes by dimension, segmenting nodes data by dimension, filtering nodes by dimension, or pivoting rows by dimension.

13 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the assets include at least one asset based on an accounting assignment of a cell of income or expense data.

14 . The system of claim 7 , further comprising generating a visualization of a revenue, net income, and expenses.
