Abstract

Base station antennas include an externally accessible active antenna module releasably coupled to a recessed segment that is over a chamber in the base station antenna and that is longitudinally and laterally extending along and across a rear of a base station antenna housing. The base station antenna housing has a passive antenna assembly that cooperates with the active antenna module.

Claims (15)

1 . A base station antenna comprising:

a base station antenna housing with a passive antenna assembly therein; and

an active antenna module positioned adjacent the base station antenna housing,

wherein the active antenna module comprises a frequency selective surface and/or substrate.

2 . The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the frequency selective surface and/or substrate is configured to allow radio frequency (RF) energy to pass through at a first frequency range and is configured to reflect and/or absorb RF energy at a different second frequency range.

3 . The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the active antenna module comprises a massive multiple input multiple output (mMIMO) array of radiating elements.

4 . The base station antenna of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first array comprising a first column of radiating elements in the base station antenna housing and mounted to be forward of a primary reflector and the frequency selective surface and/or substrate on a right side portion of the base station antenna housing;

a second array comprising a second column of radiating elements in the base station antenna housing and mounted to be forward of the primary reflector and the frequency selective surface and/or substrate on a left side portion of the base station antenna; and

a multiple column array of radiating elements that is at least partly positioned laterally between the first array and the second array of radiating elements.

5 . The base station antenna of claim 1 , wherein the base station antenna housing comprises a primary reflector in the base station antenna housing and a frequency selective surface and/or substrate in the base station antenna housing coupled to the primary reflector or provided as an extension of the primary reflector at an upper portion of the base station antenna housing.

6 . The base station antenna of claim 5 , wherein the frequency selective surface and/or substrate in the base station antenna housing has a pattern configured to reflect radio frequency energy in some frequencies and to propagate radio frequency energy in other frequencies, and wherein the pattern changes in different areas of the frequency selective surface and/or substrate.

7 . The base station antenna of claim 5 , wherein the frequency selective surface and/or substrate of the active antenna module and/or in the base station antenna housing comprises different size and/or shape metal patches in the different areas.

8 . The base station antenna of claim 5 , wherein the base station antenna housing comprising the passive antenna assembly has a rear wall with a recess that extends laterally across at least 30% of a width of the rear wall, wherein the base station antenna further comprises a mounting structure bracket coupled to the housing and to a pole, and wherein the active antenna module is positioned between the pole and the base station antenna housing, aligned with the recess.

9 . The base station antenna of claim 5 , wherein the frequency selective surface and/or substrate in the base station antenna housing comprising the passive antenna assembly comprises one or more respective cutouts aligned with a corresponding feed stalk behind a corresponding radiating element of respective first and second linear arrays.
