Doped fiber amplifier having pass-through pump laser with integrated optical isolator
An amplifier operable with an electrical drive signal can amplify signal light having a signal wavelength. A laser diode has an active section with input and output facets. An optical isolator is integrated with a package that includes the laser diode. The active section is configured to generate pump light in response to injection of the electrical drive signal into the active section. The pump light has a pump wavelength different from the signal wavelength. A doped fiber doped with an active dopant is in optical communication with the signal light and is in optical communication with at least a portion of the pump light from the laser diode. The pump wavelength of the pump light is configured to interact with the active dopant of the fiber and thereby amplify the signal light.
1 . A fiber amplifier operable with an electrical drive signal for amplifying signal light having a signal wavelength, the fiber amplifier comprising:
a laser diode having an active section and having an input facet and an output facet arranged in a package of the laser diode, the input and output facets in optical communication with the signal light and configured to pass the signal light through the laser diode from the input facet to the output facet, the active section being configured to generate pump light;
an optical isolator integrated within the package of the laser diode; and
an output fiber doped with an active dopant, the output fiber being in optical communication with the signal light and being in optical communication with at least a portion of the pump light from the laser diode;
wherein the active section generates pump light in response to injection of the electrical drive signal into the active section, the pump light having a pump wavelength different from the signal wavelength; and
wherein the pump wavelength of the pump light is configured to interact with the active dopant of the output fiber and thereby amplify the signal light.
2 . The fiber amplifier of claim 1 , wherein the optical isolator is arranged between an input fiber and the input facet of the active section.
3 . The fiber amplifier of claim 1 , wherein the optical isolator comprises a plurality of optical elements.
4 . The fiber amplifier of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of optical elements includes a collimator, an optical filter, a volume Bragg grating, or a focusing lens.
5 . The fiber amplifier of claim 1 , wherein the optical isolator is arranged between the output facet of the active section and the output fiber.
6 . The fiber amplifier of claim 1 , wherein the signal wavelength is in a 1550-nm range, and wherein the pump wavelength is in a 980-nm and/or 1480-nm range.
7 . The fiber amplifier of claim 1 , wherein the dopant of the output fiber comprises erbium, neodymium, ytterbium, praseodymium, bismuth, holium, or thulium.
8 . A method used with signal light having a signal wavelength, the method comprising:
receiving the signal light at an optical isolator integrated in a package of a laser diode;
passing the signal light from the optical isolator to an input facet of the laser diode;
passing the signal light from the input facet through the laser diode to an output facet;
generating pump light in an active section of the laser diode by injecting an electrical drive signal into the active section of the laser diode, the pump light having a pump wavelength different from the signal wavelength;
transmitting the signal light and at least a portion of the pump light to a doped fiber amplifier in optical communication with the laser diode; and
amplifying the signal light by interacting the pump light with the doped fiber amplifier; and
wherein injecting the electrical drive signal into the active section comprises:
injecting a first of the electrical drive signal into a first portion of the active section;
injecting a second of the electrical drive signal into a second portion of the active section; and
optically isolating at least a portion of the pump light generated with one of the first and second portions of the active section from the other of the first and second portions of the active section by a reflective structure.
9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising arranging the optical isolator between an input fiber and the input facet.
10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the optical isolator comprises a plurality of optical elements.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of optical elements includes a collimator, an optical filter, a volume Bragg grating, or a focusing lens.
12 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising arranging the optical isolator between the output facet and the doped fiber amplifier.
13 . The method of claim 8 , the signal wavelength being in a 1550-nm range, wherein the pump wavelength is in a 980-nm and/or 1480-nm range; and wherein the doped fiber amplifier comprises an active dopant of erbium.
14 . A fiber amplifier operable with an electrical drive signal for amplifying signal light having a signal wavelength, the fiber amplifier comprising:
a laser diode having an active section and having an input facet and an output facet arranged in a package of the laser diode, the input and output facets in optical communication with the signal light and configured to pass the signal light through the laser diode from the input facet to the output facet, the active section being configured to generate pump light;
an optical isolator integrated within the package of the laser diode;
an output fiber doped with an active dopant, the output fiber being in optical communication with the signal light and being in optical communication with at least a portion of the pump light from the laser diode; and
at least one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) configured to lock the pump light from at least one of the input and output facets to the pump wavelength.
15 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the optical isolator is arranged between an input fiber and the input facet of the active section.
16 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the optical isolator comprises a plurality of optical elements.
17 . The fiber amplifier of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of optical elements includes a collimator, an optical filter, a volume Bragg grating, or a focusing lens.
18 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the optical isolator is arranged between the output facet of the active section and the output fiber.
19 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the active section generates pump light in response to injection of the electrical drive signal into the active section, the pump light having a pump wavelength different from the signal wavelength.
20 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the dopant of the output fiber comprises erbium, neodymium, ytterbium, praseodymium, bismuth, holium, or thulium.
21 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the FBG is arranged on the output fiber to receive the signal light and at least a portion of the pump light from the output facet.
22 . The fiber amplifier of claim 14 , wherein the FBG is arranged within the package of the laser diode.
23 . A fiber amplifier operable with an electrical drive signal for amplifying signal light having a signal wavelength, the fiber amplifier comprising:
a laser diode having an active section and having an input facet and an output facet arranged in a package of the laser diode, the input and output facets in optical communication with the signal light and configured to pass the signal light through the laser diode from the input facet to the output facet, the active section being configured to generate pump light;
an optical isolator integrated within the package of the laser diode; and
an output fiber doped with an active dopant, the output fiber being in optical communication with the signal light and being in optical communication with at least a portion of the pump light from the laser diode;
wherein:
the active section comprises a waveguide extending between the input and output facets;
a first portion of the waveguide near the input facet has a first transmissivity at least at the pump wavelength;
a second portion of the waveguide near the output facet has a second transmissivity at least at the pump wavelength; and
the first transmissivity is different from the second transmissivity.
24 . The fiber amplifier of claim 23 , wherein the optical isolator is arranged between an input fiber and the input facet of the active section.
25 . The fiber amplifier of claim 23 , wherein the optical isolator comprises a plurality of optical elements.
26 . The fiber amplifier of claim 25 , wherein the plurality of optical elements includes a collimator, an optical filter, a volume Bragg grating, or a focusing lens.
27 . The fiber amplifier of claim 23 , wherein the optical isolator is arranged between the output facet of the active section and the output fiber.
28 . The fiber amplifier of claim 23 , wherein the active section generates pump light in response to injection of the electrical drive signal into the active section, the pump light having a pump wavelength different from the signal wavelength.
29 . The fiber amplifier of claim 23 , wherein the dopant of the output fiber comprises erbium, neodymium, ytterbium, praseodymium, bismuth, holium, or thulium.
