Abstract

A hybrid flute for a stalk roll may be configured with a sharp edge positioned between a first blunt edge and a second blunt edge along a length of the flute edge. The flute edge may extend radially outward from a main cylinder of the stalk roll. The flute edge may be engaged with a radius at the base of the flute edge, and a flute base may extend from the radius. A plurality of flute bases positioned adjacent to one another may be configured to form a main cylinder for the stalk roll.

Claims (32)

1 . A stalk roll flute comprising:

a flute edge comprising a first blunt edge and a first sharp edge along a length of the flute edge; and

a flute base, wherein the flute edge is substantially parallel to the flute base.

2 . The flute according to claim 1 , wherein the flute edge is attached to a portion of a cylindrical shell of a main cylinder.

3 . The flute according to claim 2 , wherein the flute edge is engaged to the main cylinder in a generally radial direction.

4 . The flute according to claim 1 , wherein the flute edge further comprises a second blunt edge.

5 . The flute according to claim 1 , wherein the flute is offset from a second flute by approximately 180 degrees.

6 . The flute according to claim 5 , wherein the second flute comprises a second flute edge and a second flute base, wherein the second flute edge comprises a second blunt edge and a second sharp edge.

7 . The flute according to claim 1 , wherein the flute base comprises an aperture passing through the flute base.

8 . The flute according to claim 1 , wherein the flute base further comprises a base bevel at a first terminal end of the flute base.

9 . A stalk roll assembly comprising:

a plurality of stalk rolls, the plurality of stalk rolls comprising a plurality of flutes, a main cylinder, and one or more support members; and

a stalk engagement gap;

wherein each of the plurality of flutes comprise:

a flute edge comprising a first blunt edge and a first sharp edge along a length of the flute edge; and

a flute base,

wherein the flute edge is substantially parallel to the flute base.

10 . The assembly according to claim 9 , wherein the main cylinder includes two separable halves, wherein each of the two separable halves are capable of connecting or separating from one another transverse to an axis of the main cylinder.

11 . The assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the one or more support members protrude radially inward from each of the two separable halves of the main cylinder.

12 . The assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the one or more support members include at least three planar surfaces completely residing within each of the two separable halves of the main cylinder, the at least three planar surfaces comprising a subset of at least two planar surfaces that are oriented perpendicular to one another.

13 . The assembly according to claim 12 , wherein a chamfered relief is located at a corner of the at least two planar surfaces that are oriented perpendicular to one another.

14 . A stalk roll comprising:

a plurality of flutes; and

a main cylinder;

wherein each of the plurality of flutes comprise:

a flute edge comprising a first blunt edge and a first sharp edge along a length of the flute edge; and

a flute base,

wherein the flute edge is substantially parallel to the flute base.

15 . The stalk roll according to claim 14 , wherein the main cylinder includes two separable halves, wherein each of the two separable halves are capable of connecting or separating from one another transverse to an axis of the main cylinder.

16 . The stalk roll according to claim 14 , further comprising one or more support members.

17 . The stalk roll according to claim 16 , wherein the one or more support members protruding radially inward from each of the two separable halves of the main cylinder.

18 . The stalk roll according to claim 14 , wherein the flute edge of a flute of the plurality of flutes extends outward from the main cylinder in a generally radial direction.
