Abstract

An aerosol-generating article extending from a mouth end to a distal end is provided, including: an aerosol-generating element; and a downstream section located downstream of the aerosol-generating element, the downstream section extending from a downstream end of the aerosol-generating element to the mouth end of the aerosol-generating article, a resistance to draw (RTD) of the downstream section being less than 10 mm H 2 O, between about 5 percent and about 35 percent of a length of the downstream section includes a first section defining a first empty region for air to flow, at least about 65 percent of the length of the downstream section further includes a second section defining a second empty region for air to flow, and a total cross-sectional area of the first empty region defined by the first section being less than a total cross-sectional area of the second empty region defined by the second section.

Claims (27)

1 . An aerosol-generating article extending from a mouth end to a distal end, comprising:

an aerosol-generating element; and

a downstream section located downstream of the aerosol-generating element, the downstream section extending from a downstream end of the aerosol-generating element to the mouth end of the aerosol-generating article,

wherein a resistance to draw (RTD) of the downstream section is less than 10 mm H 2 O,

wherein between about 5 percent and about 35 percent of a length of the downstream section comprises a first section defining a first empty region for air to flow,

wherein at least about 65 percent of the length of the downstream section further comprises a second section defining a second empty region for air to flow, and

wherein a total cross-sectional area of the first empty region defined by the first section is less than a total cross-sectional area of the second empty region defined by the second section.

2 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein the second empty region comprises at least one cavity, the at least one cavity providing an unrestricted air flow channel extending along a longitudinal direction of the aerosol-generating article.

3 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 ,

wherein the second section of the downstream section comprises at least one hollow tubular element, and

wherein the second empty region is defined by the at least one hollow tubular element.

4 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 3 , wherein a peripheral wall thickness of the at least one hollow tubular element is less than about 1.5 millimetres.

5 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 ,

wherein the first section comprises a first segment, the first segment defining at least one segment air flow channel extending along a longitudinal direction of the first segment, and

wherein the first empty region is defined by the at least one segment air flow channel.

6 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 ,

wherein between about 5 percent and about 25 percent of the length of the downstream section further comprises the first section defining the first empty region for air to flow, and

wherein at least about 75 percent of the length of the downstream section further comprises the second section defining the second empty region for air to flow.

7 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein the RTD per unit length of the downstream section is between about 0 mm H 2 O per mm and about 3 mm H 2 O per mm.

8 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein the RTD per unit length of the first section is between about 0 mm H 2 O per mm and about 3 mm H 2 O per mm.

9 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein a ratio of a total cross-sectional area of the second empty region to a total cross-sectional area of the first empty region is at least about 1.1.

10 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein a ratio of a total cross-sectional area of the first empty region defined by the first section to a total cross-sectional area of the downstream section is least about 5 percent.

11 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein a ratio of a total cross-sectional area of the second empty region defined by the second section to a total cross-sectional area of the downstream section is least about 25 percent.

12 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein the downstream section further comprises a ventilation zone at a location along the second section.

13 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein the aerosol-generating element comprises tobacco cut filler.

14 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein an aerosol former content in the aerosol-generating element is at least about 10 percent by weight.

15 . The aerosol-generating article according to claim 1 , wherein the second section of the downstream section has a length of at least about 25 millimetres.
