Systems and methods for dynamically and intelligently monitoring a host's glycemic condition after an alert is triggered
Systems and methods for providing sensitive and specific alarms indicative of glycemic condition are provided herein. In an embodiment, a method of processing sensor data by a continuous analyte sensor includes: evaluating sensor data using a first function to determine whether a real time glucose value meets a first threshold; evaluating sensor data using a second function to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets a second threshold; activating a hypoglycemic indicator if either the first threshold is met or if the second threshold is predicted to be met; and providing an output based on the activated hypoglycemic indicator.
1 . A method for activating glycemic indicators, the method comprising:
evaluating a selection of glucose sensor data using a first function to determine whether a real time glucose value meets or crosses a user settable real time threshold value;
evaluating the same selection of glucose sensor data using a second function different from the first function to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets or crosses a predictive threshold value within a fixed prediction horizon, wherein the user settable real time threshold value is different from the predictive threshold value;
providing a first output including a first glycemic indicator when the user settable real time threshold value is met or crossed; and
providing a second output including a second glycemic indicator when the predicted glucose value meets or crosses the predictive threshold value within the fixed prediction horizon.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is not settable by a user.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is preset.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein:
the selection of glucose sensor data is a value representative of one or more data points averaged over a predetermined time period.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:
the user settable real time threshold value defines an upper glucose value for a user;
the predictive threshold value defines an upper glucose value for the user; and
the first and second glycemic indicators are hyperglycemic indicators.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:
the user settable real time threshold value defines a lower glucose value for a user;
the predictive threshold value defines a lower glucose value for the user; and
the first and second glycemic indicators are hypoglycemic indicators.
7 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium for storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for activating glycemic indicators, the method comprising:
evaluating a selection of glucose sensor data using a first function to determine whether a real time glucose value meets or crosses a user settable real time threshold value;
evaluating the same selection of glucose sensor data using a second function different from the first function to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets or crosses a predictive threshold value within a fixed prediction horizon, wherein the user settable real time threshold value is different from the predictive threshold value;
providing a first output including a first glycemic indicator when the user settable real time threshold value is met or crossed; and
providing a second output including a second glycemic indicator when the predicted glucose value meets or crosses the predictive threshold value within the fixed prediction horizon.
8 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is 20 minutes or less.
9 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is not settable by a user.
10 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is preset.
11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is preset at a factory.
12 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein:
the user settable real time threshold value defines an upper glucose value for a user;
the predictive threshold value defines an upper glucose value for the user; and
the first and second glycemic indicators are hyperglycemic indicators.
13 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein:
the user settable real time threshold value defines a lower glucose value for a user;
the predictive threshold value defines a lower glucose value for the user; and
the first and second glycemic indicators are hypoglycemic indicators.
14 . A system for activating glycemic indicators, the system comprising:
a memory configured to store glucose sensor data from a transcutaneous glucose sensor; and
a processor, coupled to the memory, the processor configured to:
evaluate a selection of the glucose sensor data using a first function to determine whether a real time glucose value meets or crosses a user settable real time threshold value,
evaluate the same selection of glucose sensor data using a second function different from the first function to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets or crosses a predictive threshold value within a fixed prediction horizon, wherein the user settable real time threshold value is different from the predictive threshold value,
provide a first output including a first glycemic indicator when the user settable real time threshold value is met or crossed, and
provide a second output including a second glycemic indicator when the predicted glucose value meets or crosses the predictive threshold value within the fixed prediction horizon.
15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is 20 minutes or less.
16 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is not settable by a user.
17 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the fixed prediction horizon is preset at a factory.
18 . The system of claim 14 , wherein:
the user settable real time threshold value defines an upper glucose value for a user;
the predictive threshold value defines an upper glucose value for the user; and
the first and second glycemic indicators are hyperglycemic indicators.
19 . The system of claim 14 , wherein:
the user settable real time threshold value defines a lower glucose value for a user;
the predictive threshold value defines a lower glucose value for the user; and
the first and second glycemic indicators are hypoglycemic indicators.
20 . A method for activating glycemic indicators, the method comprising:
evaluating a selection of glucose sensor data to determine whether a real time glucose value meets or crosses a user settable real time threshold value, wherein the selection of glucose sensor data includes a value representative of one or more data points averaged over a predetermined time period;
evaluating the same selection of glucose sensor data to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets or crosses a predictive threshold value within a preset fixed prediction horizon, wherein the user settable real time threshold value is different from the predictive threshold value;
providing a first output including a first glycemic indicator when the user settable real time threshold value is met or crossed; and
providing a second output including a second glycemic indicator when the predicted glucose value meets or crosses the predictive threshold value within the preset fixed prediction horizon.
21 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium for storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for activating glycemic indicators, the method comprising:
evaluating a selection of glucose sensor data to determine whether a real time glucose value meets or crosses a user settable real time threshold value, wherein the selection of glucose sensor data includes a value representative of one or more data points averaged over a predetermined time period;
evaluating the same selection of glucose sensor data to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets or crosses a predictive threshold value within a preset fixed prediction horizon, wherein the user settable real time threshold value is different from the predictive threshold value;
providing a first output including a first glycemic indicator when the user settable real time threshold value is met or crossed; and
providing a second output including a second glycemic indicator when the predicted glucose value meets or crosses the predictive threshold value within the preset fixed prediction horizon.
22 . A system for activating glycemic indicators, the system comprising:
a memory configured to store glucose sensor data from a transcutaneous glucose sensor; and
a processor, coupled to the memory, the processor configured to:
evaluate a selection of glucose sensor data to determine whether a real time glucose value meets or crosses a user settable real time threshold value, wherein the selection of glucose sensor data includes a value representative of one or more data points averaged over a predetermined time period;
evaluate the same selection of glucose sensor data to determine whether a predicted glucose value meets or crosses a predictive threshold value within a preset fixed prediction horizon, wherein the user settable real time threshold value is different from the predictive threshold value;
provide a first output including a first glycemic indicator when the user settable real time threshold value is met or crossed; and
provide a second output including a second glycemic indicator when the predicted glucose value meets or crosses the predictive threshold value within the preset fixed prediction horizon.
