Biopsy device
Disclosed is a biopsy device having a tip member with a rearward facing cutting portion for use in a biopsy procedure. The biopsy procedure involves introducing and manoeuvring the device into the tissue of a subject and obtaining a biopsy sample. The biopsy device has an elongate flexible rod member having a proximal end and a distal end that define a first longitudinal axis, and a tip member having a proximal end and a distal end that define a second longitudinal axis. The tip member is located at or towards the distal end of the elongate member and positioned or positionable so that the longitudinal axis of the tip member is angularly offset with respect to the longitudinal axis of the elongate member. The distal end of the tip member is configured to penetrate tissue and the proximal end of the tip member has a cutting portion for cutting tissue.

6 . The biopsy device according to claim 5 , wherein the blades are single blades that are facing each other, wherein the blades are spaced apart from each other so as to define a void in the cutting portion between the blades.
7 . The biopsy device according to claim 1 , wherein the elongate flexible rod member comprises a trough located at its distal end.
8 . The biopsy device according to claim 7 wherein the trough of the elongate flexible rod member is positioned opposite to and facing the cutting portion and/or a void in the cutting portion of the tip member.
9 . The biopsy device according to claim 1 , wherein the elongate flexible rod member is slidably and rotatably disposed within the lumen of a sheath member, wherein the sheath member comprises a proximal end and a distal end, with the elongate flexible rod member extending from the distal end of the sheath member.
10 . The biopsy device according to claim 9 , wherein the sheath member comprises an anvil such that it can form a blade and anvil relationship with the cutting portion of the tip member in use.
11 . The biopsy device according to claim 10 , wherein the anvil extends around at least part of the entire edge of the lumen at the distal end of the sheath member.
12 . The biopsy device according to claim 9 , wherein the sheath member comprises a collar which acts as intrusion depth limitation member located proximally of the distal end.
13 . The biopsy device according to claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the tip member is in the form of a bevelled tip at an acute angle with respect to the second longitudinal axis of the tip member for penetrating the tissue of a subject.
14 . The biopsy device according to claim 12 , wherein the collar is comprised of a metal.
15 . The biopsy device according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the tip member, the elongate flexible rod member and/or the sheath member are composed of a shape memory alloy.
16 . A kit-of-parts comprising the biopsy device according to claim 1 in the form of a sterile, pre-packaged kit-of-parts for single use.
17 . The kit-of-parts according to claim 16 , where the kit further comprises a micro-catheter and/or a guide catheter, wherein the micro-catheter and/or guide catheter is in the same pack as the biopsy device or in a separate pack.
18 . A method for obtaining a biopsy from a subject, wherein the method comprises:
delivering the device according to claim 1 to a body location within the body of the patient;
advancing the distal end of the tip member of the device into a tissue so that an entirety of the tip member advances into the tissue; and
withdrawing the tip member from the tissue.
19 . The method according to claim 18 , wherein after penetrating the tissue and prior to retraction, the tip member is rotated in the tissue.
20 . The method according to claim 18 , wherein the elongate flexible rod member is slidably and rotatably disposed within the lumen of a sheath member, wherein the sheath member comprises a proximal end and a distal end, with the elongate flexible rod member extending from the distal end of the sheath member, and wherein on advancing the tip member into the tissue, the elongate flexible rod member is retracted within the sheath member so that the proximal end of the tip member abuts the distal end of the sheath member.
