Coupling device for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element and bone anchoring device with such a coupling device
A coupling device for coupling a rod to a bone anchoring element includes a receiving part having a first end, a second end, a central axis extending through the first end and the second end, and a channel for receiving a rod. The receiving part defines an accommodation space for accommodating a head of a bone anchoring element and an opening for inserting the head. The coupling device further includes a pressure element arranged at least partially in the accommodation space, the pressure element having a flexible portion to clamp an inserted head, and a clamping element extending at least partially around the flexible portion of the pressure element. The clamping element is configured to move from a first position to a second position in which the clamping element exerts a clamping force onto the pressure element.
1 . A bone anchoring device for coupling a rod to a bone, the bone anchoring device comprising:
a bone anchoring element comprising a shank and a head;
a receiving part having a first end, a second end below the first end, a central axis extending through the first end and the second end, a channel at the first end for receiving the rod, and an accommodation space at the second end for accommodating the head of the bone anchoring element;
a compressible element defining a seat that is positionable in the accommodation space to directly engage the head to hold the head in the receiving part; and
a separate ring-shaped element positionable in the receiving part;
wherein when the bone anchoring element, the compressible element, and the ring-shaped element are assembled to the receiving part, the ring-shaped element is directly engageable with the compressible element with at least part of the ring-shaped element positioned axially lower than a bottom of the channel, and is rotatable around the central axis to adjust a force exerted by the compressible element on the head.
2 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the ring-shaped element is rotatable around the central axis to urge the compressible element towards the head.
3 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the ring-shaped element is rotatable around the central axis to adjust a clamping force exerted on the head.

The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the receiving part further defines an opening at the second end through which the head of the bone anchoring element is insertable, and wherein the compressible element is expandable to facilitate insertion of the head through the opening into the accommodation space.
5 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the compressible element is further configured to extend into the channel of the receiving part to engage the rod.
6 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the ring-shaped element is configured to extend around at least part of the expandable element.
7 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein an advancement structure is formed on at least one of the receiving part or the ring-shaped element to facilitate axial advancement of the ring-shaped element when the ring-shaped element is rotated.
8 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the advancement structure comprises a thread.
9 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the ring-shaped element forms a slotted ring.
10 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the ring-shaped element forms a closed ring.
11 . A bone anchoring device for coupling a rod to a bone, the bone anchoring device comprising:
a bone anchoring element comprising a shank and a head;
a receiving part having a first end, a second end, a central axis extending through the first end and the second end, a channel at the first end for receiving the rod, and an accommodation space at the second end for accommodating the head of the bone anchoring element; and
a clamping element comprising an unthreaded surface and at least one recess that is formed on the unthreaded surface, wherein at least part of the clamping element is configured to extend into the accommodation space;
wherein when the bone anchoring element and the clamping element are assembled to the receiving part, the clamping element is rotatable relative to another part of the bone anchoring device between a first position where the at least one recess of the clamping element is out of engagement with a corresponding projection of the bone anchoring device, and a second position where the at least one recess engages the corresponding projection, wherein a radial position of the corresponding projection is configured to remain substantially constant between the first and second positions, and wherein rotation of the clamping element relative to the another part of the bone anchoring device facilitates holding of the head in the accommodation space.
12 . The bone anchoring device of claim 11 , wherein rotation of the clamping element relative to the another part of the bone anchoring device adjusts a clamping force exerted on the head.
13 . The bone anchoring device of claim 12 , wherein rotation of the clamping element relative to the another part of the bone anchoring device from the second position to the first position increases the clamping force exerted on the head.
14 . The bone anchoring device of claim 11 , wherein the another part of the bone anchoring device comprises a separate pressure element that is movable relative to the receiving part.
15 . The bone anchoring device of claim 11 , wherein when the bone anchoring element and the clamping element are assembled to the receiving part, the receiving part and the bone anchoring element are configured to be spaced apart from one another with the clamping element positioned between them.
16 . The bone anchoring device of claim 11 , wherein the receiving part further defines an opening at the second end through which the head of the bone anchoring element is insertable to reach the accommodation space.
17 . The bone anchoring device of claim 11 , wherein the clamping element is configured to remain spaced apart from the head in the receiving part.
18 . A bone anchoring device for coupling a rod to a bone, the bone anchoring device comprising:
a bone anchoring element comprising a shank and a head;
a receiving part having a first end, a second end, a central axis extending through the first end and the second end, a channel at the first end for receiving the rod, and an accommodation space at the second end for accommodating the head of the bone anchoring element; and
an unthreaded clamping element that is positionable in the receiving part;
wherein when the bone anchoring element and the clamping element are assembled to the receiving part, the entire clamping element is adjustable relative to the receiving part in a direction that is angled relative to the central axis from a first position to a second position to increase a clamping force on the head, wherein the clamping force on the head continuously increases as the clamping element moves from the first position to the second position, and wherein the clamping element is configured to be held at the first position, at the second position, and at a plurality of intermediate positions between the first position and the second position.
19 . The bone anchoring device of claim 18 , wherein the clamping element is rotatable around the central axis from the first position to the second position.
20 . The bone anchoring device of claim 18 , wherein the receiving part further defines an opening at the second end through which the head of the bone anchoring element is insertable to reach the accommodation space.
