Intermittent catheter
An intermittent catheter, preferably a female intermittent catheter, is provided in an assembly. The assembly may include a cap which may be attachable to the base of the assembly in use, and/or a seal which misaligns with sealing surfaces of a chamber wall and a moveable insert in use. It may have a two-step deployment, and/or a sheath that pulls out a storage chamber. Internal and external housing may define the storage chamber. The housing may have a filling aperture and/or the storage chamber may comprise an insert configured to move axially in response to rotation.
1 . A catheter assembly having a longitudinal axis, the catheter assembly comprising:
a catheter; and
a wetting agent storage chamber, the wetting agent storage chamber comprising a chamber wall and a movable insert,
wherein the movable insert is configured to move axially along the longitudinal axis with respect to the chamber wall between a first position and a second position,
wherein in the first position the wetting agent storage chamber is sealed by a seal element located between the chamber wall and the movable insert;
wherein the seal element is configured to axially align with sealing surfaces of the chamber wall and the movable insert in the first position; and
wherein in the second position the seal element is configured to be axially misaligned with at least one of the sealing surfaces; and
wherein at least one of the movable insert and the chamber wall comprises a divergent portion over which the seal element passes when transitioning between the first position and the second position such that the distance between the chamber wall and the movable insert at the axial location of the seal element is increased when in the second position.
2 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a wetting agent, wherein when the movable insert is in in the second position, the wetting agent is sealed within the wetting agent storage chamber.
3 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein, when the movable insert is in the second position, the seal element maintains a seal between the chamber wall and the movable insert.
4 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein, when the movable insert is in the second position, the seal element is separated from at least one of the sealing surfaces so as to provide a flow path for the wetting agent past the seal element.
5 . The catheter assembly of claim 4 , further comprising a wetting chamber, wherein the catheter is coaxially nested within the wetting chamber, and wherein the wetting agent is provided within the wetting chamber when in the second position.
6 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the seal element is a proximal seal element which is proximate to an insertion end of the catheter, the catheter assembly further comprising: a distal seal element which is axially separated from the proximal seal element on the distal side of the proximal seal element.
7 . The catheter assembly of claim 6 , wherein the distal seal element and proximal seal element are located radially between the movable insert and the chamber wall.
8 . The catheter assembly of claim 6 , wherein the distal seal element maintains sealing contact in the first and second positions.
9 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the catheter comprises the movable insert.
10 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator operable to move the movable insert relative to the chamber wall.
11 . The catheter assembly of claim 10 , wherein the actuator comprises a rotatable actuator.
12 . The catheter assembly of claim 10 , further comprising an external housing which comprises a removable cap, wherein the actuator comprises the removable cap.
13 . The catheter assembly of claim 12 , wherein the cap is engaged with the movable insert such that rotating the cap rotates the movable insert.
14 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second position is a wetting position in which the catheter is configured to be wetted by the wetting agent.
15 . The catheter assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second position is a primed position in which the catheter is configured to be withdrawn from the storage chamber.
16 . A catheter assembly having a longitudinal axis, the catheter assembly comprising:
a catheter;
a wetting agent storage chamber, the wetting agent storage chamber defined at least in part by a chamber wall and a movable insert, the movable insert comprising a sealing surface and a divergent portion; and
a seal element located between the chamber wall and the movable insert;
wherein the movable insert is configured to move axially along the longitudinal axis with respect to the chamber wall between a first position and a second position;
wherein the seal element is configured to axially align with the sealing surface when the movable insert is in the first position to thereby seal the wetting agent storage chamber when the movable insert is in the first position;
wherein the seal element is configured to be axially misaligned with the sealing surface when the movable insert is in the second position; and
wherein the seal element is configured to pass over the divergent portion as the movable insert moves between the first position and the second position such that a distance between the chamber wall and the movable insert at the axial location of the seal element is increased when the movable insert is in the second position.
