Abstract

A power tool includes a motor having a drive shaft and a transmission having an input shaft operatively coupled to the drive shaft of the motor and an output shaft operatively coupled to a tool holder. The transmission includes at least a first gear and a second gear. A gear selection key is moveable between a first position and a second position and configured to engage the first gear to the output shaft in the first position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the first gear and configured to engage the second gear to the output shaft in the second position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the second gear. The first position and the second position are separated by a distance greater than a width of the gear selection key.

Claims (42)

1 . A power tool comprising:

a motor having a drive shaft;

an output shaft operatively coupled to a tool holder, the output shaft having an axially-elongated cavity formed therein;

a transmission that operatively couples the drive shaft of the motor to the output shaft, the transmission including at least a first gear and a second gear configured to transmit torque from the motor to the tool holder, and

a gear selection key moveable between a first position and a second position within the cavity, the gear selection key configured to engage the first gear to the output shaft in the first position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the first gear and configured to engage the second gear to the output shaft in the second position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the second gear;

wherein the transmission is configured such that the gear selection key cannot simultaneously engage the first gear and the second gear to the output shaft.

2 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the gear selection key is moveable within the first gear and second gear and configured to engage an internal surface of the first gear and second gear.

3 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the first gear and the second gear are rotatably mounted on the output shaft and axially aligned with the cavity, and wherein at least part of the gear selection key is moveable within the cavity.

4 . The power tool according to claim 3 wherein the first gear and second gear are configured to rotate with respect to the output shaft when not in engagement with the gear selection key and configured to rotate together with the output shaft when in engagement with the gear selection key.

5 . The power tool according claim 1 , wherein the transmission comprises a third gear and the gear selection key is moveable between the first position, the second position and a third position, wherein the gear selection key is configured to couple the third gear to the output shaft in the third position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the third gear.

6 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the first gear and the second gear are rotatable about a common rotation axis and the gear selection key is moveable in a direction parallel with the common rotation axis.

7 . The power tool according to claim 6 wherein the common rotation axis is coaxial with a rotation axis of the output shaft and the tool holder.

8 . The power tool according to claim 1 , further comprising an intermediate shaft comprising a first idling gear and a second idling gear configured to respectively engage the first gear and the second gear and the first idling gear and the second idling gear are fixed with respect to each other.

9 . The power tool according claim 8 , wherein a rotational axis of the intermediate shaft is parallel with a rotational axis of the output shaft.

10 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the gear selection key is mounted on a movable gear selection rod.

11 . The power tool according to claim 10 , wherein the movable gear selection rod is operatively coupled to a gear selection actuator.

12 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the first gear and the second gear each comprise at least one key slot configured to receive the gear selection key.

13 . The power tool according to claim 12 , wherein the gear selection key has a rectangular cross-section.

14 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the transmission comprises a clutch.

15 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the gear selection key comprises a spring loaded locking ball configured to engage with a first recess and a second recess respectively corresponding to the gear selection key in the first position and the second position.

16 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein the gear selection key comprises a synchronization spring configured to urge the gear selection key in a direction towards the first position.

17 . The power tool according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first gear or the second gear comprises at least one weight reduction pocket between a gear periphery and a gear center.

18 . A power tool comprising:

a motor having a drive shaft;

an output shaft operatively coupled to a tool holder, the output shaft having an axial bore formed therein;

a transmission that operatively couples the drive shaft of the motor to the output shaft, the transmission including: at least a first gear and a second gear configured to transmit torque from the motor to the tool holder; and

a gear selection key moveable between a first position and a second position within the bore and configured to engage the first gear to the output shaft in the first position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the first gear and configured to engage the second gear to the output shaft in the second position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the second gear;

wherein the transmission defines a synchronization pocket that receives the gear selection key such that the gear selection key cannot simultaneously engage the first gear and the second gear to the output shaft.

19 . The power tool of claim 18 , wherein the first gear and the second gear are rotatably mounted to the output shaft and axially aligned with the bore, and wherein at least part of the gear selection key is moveable within the bore.

20 . A power tool comprising:

a motor having a drive shaft;
