Abstract

An electrified vehicle includes a chassis having a frame member, a tractive element, a suspension assembly having a support linkage pivotally coupled to the frame member so that the support linkage is configured to pivot about a pivot point, and an axle assembly coupled to the tractive element and supported on the support linkage. The axle assembly includes an axle and an electric motor that is oriented so that the electric motor extends in a direction toward the pivot point.

Claims (32)

1 . An electrified vehicle, comprising:

a chassis having a frame member;

a tractive element;

a suspension assembly including a support linkage pivotally coupled to the frame member so that the support linkage is configured to pivot about a pivot point; and

an axle assembly coupled to the tractive element and supported on the support linkage, wherein the axle assembly includes an axle and an electric motor that is oriented so that the electric motor extends in a direction toward the pivot point, wherein the support linkage extends from the pivot point, past the axle, and to a rear end that is arranged on a rear side of the axle, and wherein the support linkage defines a single unitary component that includes a first interface at the pivot point, a second interface at the rear end, and a unitary body that extends continuously between the first interface and the second interface.

2 . The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the axle is a rear axle.

3 . The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the axle is a front axle.

4 . The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a spring coupled between the support linkage and the frame member.

5 . The electrified vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the electric motor is arranged between the spring and the pivot point.

6 . The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein a center of mass of the electric motor is arranged between the axle and the pivot point.

7 . The electrified vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor is coupled to the axle on a side of the axle that faces the pivot point.

8 . An electrified vehicle, comprising:

a chassis having a frame member;

a tractive element;

a suspension assembly including a trailing arm pivotally coupled to the frame member so that the trailing arm is configured to pivot about a lateral axis; and

an axle assembly coupled to the tractive element and supported on the trailing arm, wherein the axle assembly includes an axle and an electric motor that is arranged between the axle and the lateral axis, wherein the trailing arm extends from the lateral axis, past the axle, to a rear end that is arranged on a rear side of the axle, wherein the trailing arm defines a single unitary component that includes a first interface at the frame member, a second interface at the rear end, and a unitary body that extends continuously between the first interface and the second interface.

9 . The electrified vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the axle is a rear axle.

10 . The electrified vehicle of claim 8 , further comprising a spring coupled between the trailing arm and the frame member.

11 . The electrified vehicle of claim 10 , wherein the electric motor is arranged between the spring and the lateral axis.

12 . The electrified vehicle of claim 8 , wherein a center of mass of the electric motor is arranged between the axle and the lateral axis.

13 . The electrified vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the electric motor is coupled to the axle on a side of the axle that faces the lateral axis.

14 . An electrified vehicle, comprising:

a chassis having a frame member;

a tractive element;

a suspension assembly including a support linkage pivotally coupled to the frame member so that the support linkage is configured to pivot about a pivot point; and

an axle assembly coupled to the tractive element and supported on the support linkage, wherein the axle assembly includes an axle and a motor that is coupled to the axle on a side of the axle that faces the pivot point and wherein the support linkage extends from the pivot point, past the axle, to a rear end that is arranged on a rear side of the axle, wherein the support linkage defines a single unitary component that includes a first interface at the pivot point, a second interface at the rear end, and a unitary body that extends continuously between the first interface and the second interface.

15 . The electrified vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the axle is a rear axle.

16 . The electrified vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the axle is a front axle.

17 . The electrified vehicle of claim 14 , further comprising a spring coupled between the support linkage and the frame member.

18 . The electrified vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the motor is arranged between the spring and the pivot point.

19 . The electrified vehicle of claim 14 , wherein a center of mass of the motor is arranged between the axle and the pivot point.

20 . The electrified vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the axle assembly is an e-axle.
