Abstract

A method includes an initial trailer health assessment and real-time trailer health monitoring. The initial trailer health assessment includes autonomous pre-trip maneuvers of the autonomous vehicle during a first time period, and detecting a pre-trip vehicle health condition. A vehicle health score is calculated based on the pre-trip vehicle health condition. If the vehicle health score is at least a threshold value, real-time trailer health monitoring is performed during a trip of the autonomous vehicle during a second time period, by actively monitoring vehicle dynamics data and/or image data associated with the autonomous vehicle, to determine a fault condition of the autonomous vehicle. If the fault condition meets a first criteria, a control parameter and/or a travel plan of the autonomous vehicle is adjusted. If the fault condition meets a second criteria different from the first criteria, a signal is sent to cause the autonomous vehicle to cease movement.

Claims (46)

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

performing, by a computing system, an initial health assessment for a vehicle prior to a trip based on a plurality of pre-trip maneuvers, wherein

the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers comprises maneuvers associated with actions performed by the vehicle automatically or through a driver, and

a pre-trip maneuver to be performed is selected from the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers based on at least one of a type of the vehicle, health history of the vehicle, vehicle age, current loading, current cargo type, trip length, trip profile, and trip terrain;

detecting, by the computing system, a pre-trip vehicle health condition during the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers;

determining, by the computing system, that a vehicle health score based on the pre-trip vehicle health condition does not satisfy a predefined threshold; and

in response to the vehicle health score,

generating, by the computing system, an alert for provision to a remote compute device, and

displaying, by the computing system, the alert through an interface of the vehicle.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to the vehicle health score, generating a report associated with the pre-trip vehicle health condition.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the report associated with the pre-trip vehicle health condition is at least one of provided from the vehicle to the remote compute device and displayed through the interface of the vehicle.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the report includes information associated with at least one of the vehicle health score, a representation of the pre-trip vehicle health condition, and results of the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to the vehicle health score based on the pre-trip vehicle health condition not satisfying the predefined threshold, aborting the trip.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising, in response to the vehicle health score based on the pre-trip vehicle health condition not satisfying the predefined threshold, at least one of scheduling a repair of the vehicle, modifying the trip, and delaying the trip.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers comprises at least one of brake cycling without moving the vehicle, gradually increasing brake pressure while moving the vehicle, and turning the vehicle at a selected speed and with a selected turn radius.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers comprises at least one of applying pressure to an accelerator of the vehicle while the vehicle is not moving, increasing pressure to the accelerator while the vehicle is moving, and increasing pressure to the accelerator while the vehicle is moving in a selected gear.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the pre-trip vehicle health condition comprises at least one of brake system hysteresis, brake pressure offset, loading condition, and wheel balance condition.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle includes a tractor and a trailer.

11 . A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to perform operations comprising:

performing an initial health assessment for a vehicle prior to a trip based on a plurality of pre-trip maneuvers, wherein

the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers comprises maneuvers associated with actions performed by the vehicle automatically or through a driver, and

a pre-trip maneuver to be performed is selected from the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers based on at least one of a type of the vehicle, health history of the vehicle, vehicle age, current loading, current cargo type, trip length, trip profile, and trip terrain;

detecting a pre-trip vehicle health condition during the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers;

determining that a vehicle health score based on the pre-trip vehicle health condition does not satisfy a predefined threshold; and

in response to the vehicle health score,

generating an alert for provision to a remote compute device, and

displaying the alert through an interface of the vehicle.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise, in response to the vehicle health score, generating a report associated with the pre-trip vehicle health condition.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the report associated with the pre-trip vehicle health condition is at least one of provided from the vehicle to the remote compute device and displayed through the interface of the vehicle.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the report includes information associated with at least one of the vehicle health score, a representation of the pre-trip vehicle health condition, and results of the plurality of pre-trip maneuvers.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise, in response to the vehicle health score based on the pre-trip vehicle health condition not satisfying the predefined threshold, aborting the trip.
