Abstract

A wax-extender emulsion including a plurality of wax-extender complex particles suspended in water is described. A wax-extender complex includes a wax component, an organic extender component and a surfactant that stabilizes the wax component and the organic extender component collectively to form the wax-extender complex. The wax-extender emulsion comprises from 2 wt % to 30 wt % organic extender. During manufacturing, the organic extender and wax component are emulsified and homogenized together to produce the wax-extender emulsion. The wax-extender emulsion can be co-applied as a mixture with adhesive resin during wood-based composite manufacturing.

Claims (12)

1 . A process for producing an organic slurry, comprising:

introducing water to a vessel;

introducing a non-powdered lignin material to the vessel;

introducing a defoamer to the vessel; and

combining and mixing the water, the non-powdered lignin material, and the defoamer in the vessel,

wherein said slurry has a pH such that the non-powdered lignin material is insoluble in the water, and

wherein the combining and mixing comprises imparting high shear and mixing on the water, the defoamer, and the non-powdered lignin material.

2 . The process of claim 1 , wherein a homogenizer, a high-speed mixer or a rotor-stator is used to impart the high shear and mixing on the water, the defoamer, and the non-powdered lignin material.

3 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the non-powdered lignin material comprises one or more byproducts of a pulping process, wherein the pulping process is selected from the group consisting of kraft pulping, sulfite pulping, acid hydrolysis, soda pulping, Organocell pulping, Acetosolv pulping, and combinations thereof.

4 . The process of claim 1 , wherein the non-powdered lignin material comprises one or more byproducts of kraft pulping.

5 . The process of claim 1 , further comprising introducing a pH modifier to the vessel.

6 . The process of claim 5 , wherein the pH modifier is sodium carbonate.
