Abstract

Disclosed are compositions and methods of making and using asphalt roofing materials. The asphalt roofing materials include sterols. The sterols improve various rheological and aging properties of the asphalt roofing materials.

Claims (20)

1 . A method for retarding the rate of aging of an asphalt-based roofing material comprising

air blowing a virgin asphalt binder composition to provide an oxidized, virgin asphalt binder composition,

adding sterol to the oxidized, virgin asphalt binder composition, and,

after adding the sterol, using the oxidized, virgin asphalt binder composition to make the asphalt-based roofing material.

2 . A method of making roofing materials comprising; treating a virgin asphalt binder to provide an oxidized virgin asphalt binder;

adding sterol to the oxidized virgin asphalt binder composition to form a coating asphalt composition; and

coating a roofing material substrate with the coating asphalt binder composition.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the roofing materials comprise a roofing shingles, a roofing rolls, or a built-up roofing material.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol includes a reclaimed sterol.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol comprises reclaimed sterol, fresh sterol, or combinations thereof.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol is a plant sterol.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol is a cholesterol.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol is a pure sterol.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol is a crude sterol.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the crude sterol is bio-derived or distilled residue of the bio-derived source.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the crude sterol comprises a tall oil pitch.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol is a combination of pure sterol and crude sterol.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the combination contains 10:90 to 90:10 weight ratio of pure sterol to crude sterol.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol is about 1 to 10 wt. % or about 1 to 3 wt. % of the asphalt binder weight.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sterol a crude sterol comprises an amount effective to provide a less negative ΔTc value after aging.
