Abstract

Described is a composition derived from a portion of reclaimed synthetic turf that contains one or more performance infill materials, one or more polymers, and one or more combusted materials. The composition is suitable to be used as an infill in a synthetic turf.

Claims (40)

1 . A composition comprising:

a. from about 80 wt % to about 95 wt % of:

i. one or more performance infill materials being one or more resilient infill materials selected from the group consisting of crumb rubber, thermoplastic elastomer, thermoplastic polyurethane, neoprene, and ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber; or

ii. one or more non-resilient infill materials selected from the group consisting of coconut husk, coconut fiber, walnut shell, and cork; or

iii. a combination of i. and ii.;

b. in addition to a., from about 3 wt % to about 10 wt % of one or more polymers being polypropylene, polyethylene, or a combination thereof; and

c. from about 2 wt % to about 10 wt % of one or more combusted materials,

wherein the composition is a homogeneous composition,

wherein the composition is a particle having a size from 10 mesh to 30 mesh.

2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 80 wt % to about 90 wt % of the one or more performance infill materials.

3 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % of the one or more polymers being polypropylene, polyethylene, or a combination thereof.

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % of the one or more combusted materials.

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:

a. from about 80 wt % to about 90 wt % of the one or more performance infill materials;

b. from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % of the one or more polymers being polypropylene, polyethylene, or a combination thereof; and

c. from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % of the one or more combusted materials.

6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more resilient infill materials comprises crumb rubber.

7 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein component b. is from about 3 wt % to about 9.914.9 wt % of polyethylene and from about 0.1 wt % to about 5 wt % of polypropylene.

8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein component b. is from about 5 wt % to about 9.5 wt % of polyethylene and from about 0.5 wt % to about 1.5 wt % of polypropylene.

9 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more combusted materials comprises ash.

10 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises:

a. from about 80 wt % to about 90 wt % of crumb rubber;

b. about 5 wt % to about 9.5 wt % of polyethylene, from about 0.5 wt % to about 1.5 wt % of polypropylene; and

c. from about 5 wt % to about 10 wt % of ash.

11 . A composition comprising:

a. from about more than 10 wt % to 90 wt % of the composition of claim 1 ; and

b. about less than 90 wt % to 10 wt % of one or more additional performance infill materials being one or more resilient infill materials selected from the group consisting of crumb rubber, thermoplastic elastomer, thermoplastic polyurethane, neoprene, and ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber; or

one or more non-resilient infill materials selected from the group consisting of coconut husk, coconut fiber, walnut shell, and cork; or

a combination thereof.

12 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the composition comprises:

a. from about 30 wt % to less than 100 wt % of the composition of claim 1 ; and

b. from about 70 wt % to about more than 0 wt % of the one or more additional performance infill materials.

13 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the composition comprises:

a. from about 50 wt % to less than 100 wt % of the composition of claim 1 ; and

b. from about 50 wt % to about more than 0 wt % of the one or more additional performance infill materials.

14 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the composition comprises:

a. from about 70 wt % to less than 100 wt % of the composition of claim 1 ; and

b. from about 30 wt % to about more than 0 wt % of the one or more additional performance infill materials.

A synthetic turf installation comprising a primary backing having a face side and a backside, a plurality of yarns tufted into the primary backing and extending substantially vertically away from the face side thereof and infill disposed between the yarns, wherein the infill comprises the composition of claim 11 .

16 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises from about 85 wt % to about 90 wt % of component a.
