Abstract

A portable air conditioner comprises a cooler, a first opening associated with the cooler, a second opening associated with the cooler, a heat exchanger, at least one pump, a fan, and a power supply. The portable air conditioner further comprises a control panel operable to selectively actuate the fan and the at least one pump to a) operate in a first mode of operation to intake the air through the first opening and discharge the air through the second opening without moving the liquid through the heat exchanger and b) operate in a second mode of operation to move the air across the heat exchanger and discharge the air through the second opening while moving liquid through the heat exchanger.

Claims (39)

1 . A portable air conditioner comprising:

a cooler;

a heat exchanger;

at least one pump configured to:

move liquid through the heat exchanger; and

discharge liquid through a spray nozzle;

a fan configured to:

intake air through an intake opening associated with the cooler;

move the air across the heat exchanger; and

discharge the air through a discharge opening associated with the cooler;

a control panel operable to selectively actuate the fan and the at least one pump to:

a) operate in a first mode of operation to intake the air through the intake opening and discharge the air through the discharge opening without moving the liquid through the heat exchanger; and

b) operate in a second mode of operation to move the air across the heat exchanger and discharge the air through the discharge opening while moving liquid through the heat exchanger; and

a power supply operatively coupled with and providing power to the at least one pump and the fan.

2 . The portable air conditioner of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pump comprises a pump located in a reservoir of the cooler.

3 . The portable air conditioner of claim 2 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to a) operate in the first mode of operation comprises disengaging the pump located in the reservoir of the cooler.

4 . The portable air conditioner of claim 2 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to b) operate in the second mode of operation comprises engaging the pump located in the reservoir of the cooler.

5 . The portable air conditioner of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pump comprises a variable speed pump.

6 . The portable air conditioner of claim 5 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to a) operate in the first mode of operation comprises decreasing a rate at which the at least one pump moves liquid through the heat exchanger.

7 . The portable air conditioner of claim 5 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to b) operate in the second mode of operation comprises increasing a rate at which the at least one pump moves liquid through the heat exchanger.

The portable air conditioner of claim 1 , wherein the control panel is further operable to selectively actuate the fan and the at least one pump to c) operate in a third mode of operation to discharge liquid through the spray nozzle without intaking the air through the intake opening or discharging the air through the discharge opening.

9 . The portable air conditioner of claim 8 , wherein the at least one pump comprises a spray pump located in a lid of the cooler.

10 . The portable air conditioner of claim 9 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to c) operate in the third mode of operation comprises:

disengaging the fan; and

engaging the spray pump located in the lid of the cooler.

11 . A method for operating a portable air conditioner comprising a cooler having an intake opening, a discharge opening, a heat exchanger, at least one pump, a fan, and a spray nozzle, the method comprising:

selectively actuating, via operation of a control panel, the fan and the at least one pump to a) operate in a first mode of operation to intake air through the intake opening and discharge the air through the discharge opening without moving liquid through the heat exchanger; and

selectively actuating, via operation of the control panel, the fan and the at least one pump to b) operate in a second mode of operation to move air across the heat exchanger and discharge the air through the discharge opening while moving liquid through the heat exchanger.

12 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 11 , wherein the at least one pump comprises a pump located in a reservoir of the cooler.

13 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 12 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to a) operate in the first mode of operation comprises disengaging the pump located in the reservoir of the cooler.

14 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 12 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to b) operate in the second mode of operation comprises engaging the pump located in the reservoir of the cooler.

15 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 11 , wherein the at least one pump comprises a variable speed pump.

16 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 15 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to a) operate in the first mode of operation comprises decreasing a rate at which the at least one pump moves liquid through the heat exchanger.

17 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 15 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to b) operate in the second mode of operation comprises increasing a rate at which the at least one pump moves liquid through the heat exchanger.

18 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 11 , further comprising selectively actuating, via operation of the control panel, the fan and the at least one pump to c) operate in a third mode of operation to discharge liquid through the spray nozzle without intaking the air through the intake opening or discharging the air through the discharge opening.

19 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 18 , wherein the at least one pump comprises a spray pump located in a lid of the cooler.

20 . The method for operating the portable air conditioner of claim 19 , wherein selectively actuating the fan and the at least one pump to c) operate in the third mode of operation comprises:

disengaging the fan; and

engaging the spray pump located in the lid of the cooler.
