Abstract

A vessel is configured to tow a marine seismic source, a spread of standard-offset streamers, and a long-offset streamer in a manner such that: a standard streamer maximum offset, measured from the at least one source to an aft-most receiver in the standard-offset streamers, is not more than 20 km; and a long-offset streamer maximum offset, measured between the at least one source and an aft-most receiver in the long-offset streamer, is longer than the standard streamer maximum offset and is between 12 km and 40 km. In some embodiments, the long-offset streamer and the standard-offset streamers are coupled to a same spreader line. In other embodiments, the long-offset streamer is coupled to the vessel by a long-offset lead-in line. In still other embodiments, the standard-offset streamers are coupled to a first spreader line, and the long-offset streamer is coupled to a second spreader line disposed aft of the first spreader line.

Claims (48)

1 . A marine seismic survey system, comprising:

a vessel configured to tow at least one marine seismic source, a spread of standard-offset streamers, and at least one long-offset streamer in a manner such that:

a standard streamer maximum offset, measured from the at least one source to an aft-most receiver in the standard-offset streamers, is not more than 20 km; and

a long-offset streamer maximum offset, measured between the at least one source and an aft-most receiver in the long-offset streamer, is longer than the standard streamer maximum offset and is between 12 km and 40 km.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the vessel is further configured to tow the at least one marine seismic source, the spread of standard-offset streamers, and the at least one long-offset streamer in a manner such that:

the standard-offset streamers and the long-offset streamer are coupled to a spreader line stretched in a cross-line direction between two paravanes; and

lead-in lines extend from the vessel to respective points on the spreader line to which the standard-offset streamers and the long-offset streamer are coupled.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the vessel is further configured to tow the at least one marine seismic source, the spread of standard-offset streamers, and the at least one long-offset streamer in a manner such that:

the standard-offset streamers are coupled to a spreader line stretched in a cross-line direction between two paravanes;

standard lead-in lines extend from the vessel to respective points on the spreader line to which the standard-offset streamers are coupled, wherein the standard lead-in lines have lengths between 750 m and 1500 m; and

a long-offset lead-in line extends from the vessel to the long-offset streamer, wherein the long-offset lead-in line has a length between 750 m and 1500 m plus a length of the standard-offset streamers.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein:

the long-offset streamer and the standard-offset streamers have the same length.

5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein:

the long-offset lead-in line is not coupled to the spreader line and is disposed at a different depth than the spreader line.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the standard-offset streamers are coupled to a first spreader line stretched in a cross-line direction between first and second paravanes;

the at least one long-offset streamer comprises two or more long-offset streamers coupled to a second spreader line stretched in the cross-line direction between third and fourth paravanes; and

the second spreader line is disposed aft of the first spreader line.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein:

the second spreader line is disposed aft of the spread of standard-offset streamers.

8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein:

the two or more long-offset streamers are towed at a different depth than the standard-offset streamers.

9 . A method of manufacturing a geophysical data product, comprising:

towing at least one marine seismic source, a spread of standard-offset streamers, and at least one long-offset streamer behind a vessel in a manner such that:

a standard streamer maximum offset, measured from the at least one source to an aft-most receiver in the standard-offset streamers, is not more than 20 km; and

a long-offset streamer maximum offset, measured between the at least one source and an aft-most receiver in the long-offset streamer, is longer than the standard streamer maximum offset and is between 12 km and 40 km;

activating the at least one marine seismic source; and

recording signals registered by receivers in the standard-offset streamers and signals registered by receivers in the long-offset streamer in a non-transitory computer-readable, thereby completing the manufacture of the geophysical data product.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the towing is performed in a manner such that:

the standard-offset streamers and the long-offset streamer are coupled to a spreader line stretched in a cross-line direction between two paravanes; and

lead-in lines extend from the vessel to respective points on the spreader line to which the standard-offset streamers and the long-offset streamer are coupled.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the towing is performed in a manner such that:

the standard-offset streamers are coupled to a spreader line stretched in a cross-line direction between two paravanes;

standard lead-in lines extend from the vessel to respective points on the spreader line to which the standard-offset streamers are coupled, wherein the standard lead-in lines have lengths between 750 m and 1500 m; and

a long-offset lead-in line extends from the vessel to the long-offset streamer, wherein the long-offset lead-in line has a length between 750 m and 1500 m plus a length of the standard-offset streamers.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the long-offset streamer and the standard-offset streamers have the same length.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the long-offset lead-in line is not coupled to the spreader line and is disposed at a different depth than the spreader line.

14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the towing is performed in a manner such that:

the standard-offset streamers are coupled to a first spreader line stretched in a cross-line direction between first and second paravanes;

the at least one long-offset streamer comprises two or more long-offset streamers coupled to a second spreader line stretched in the cross-line direction between third and fourth paravanes; and

the second spreader line is disposed aft of the first spreader line.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:

the second spreader line is disposed aft of the spread of standard-offset streamers.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:

the two or more long-offset streamers are towed at a different depth than the standard-offset streamers.
