Abstract

A splice closure apparatus and a fiber optic distribution network are provided. The splice closure apparatus includes a housing forming a plenum and an opening. A mount plate is affixed in the plenum within the housing, A signal splitter device is affixed to the mount plate. A fiber optic cable stub is extended through the opening of the housing. The cable stub includes an input optical fiber operably connected to the signal splitter device. The cable stub includes an output optical fiber operably connected to the signal splitter device.

Claims (37)

1 . An apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a housing comprising a body, a first cap and a second cap each receivable at opposing ends of the body, the housing forming a plenum between the body and the first and second caps, wherein one or more of the first cap or the second cap forms an opening;

a mount plate affixed in the plenum to the body within the housing;

a signal splitter device affixed to the mount plate; and

a fiber optic cable stub extended through the opening of the housing, wherein the cable stub comprises an input optical fiber and an output optical fiber each operably connected to the signal splitter device.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second cap comprises a transmitter test port.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the second cap comprises a receiver test port.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cap comprises a hardened fiber optic connector.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the plenum comprises between approximately 125 square inches and approximately 704 square inches.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the signal splitter device comprises a wavelength division multiplexing device.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the signal splitter device comprises a planar lightwave circuit.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cable stub is between approximately 40 feet and approximately 1000 feet long.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , the apparatus comprising:

a clamp configured to affix the cable stub to the mount plate.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cable stub comprises:

a jacket comprising an outer surface and an inner surface, wherein the outer surface is an exterior surface of the cable and the inner surface defines an interior space of the cable stub, and wherein the input optical fiber and the output optical fiber are disposed within the interior space, and wherein the jacket is extended through the opening of the housing.

11 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first cap and the second cap are configured to receive a potting material to hermetically seal the plenum.

12 . The apparatus of claim 1 , the apparatus comprising:

a splice tray affixed to the mount plate.

13 . A fiber optic distribution network, the network comprising:

a fiber optic distribution cable;

an end user; and

a splice closure apparatus, the apparatus comprising:

a housing comprising a body, a first cap and a second cap each receivable at opposing ends of the body, the housing forming a plenum between the body and the first and second caps, wherein one or more of the first cap or the second cap forms an opening;

a mount plate affixed in the plenum to the body within the housing;

a signal splitter device affixed to the mount plate; and

a fiber optic cable stub extended through the opening of the housing,

wherein the fiber optic cable stub comprises an input optical fiber operably connected to the signal splitter device and the fiber optic distribution cable, and wherein the fiber optic cable stub comprises an output optical fiber operably connected to the signal splitter device and the end user.

14 . The network of claim 13 , wherein the first or second cap comprises one or both of a transmitter test port or a receiver test port.

15 . The network of claim 13 , wherein the fiber optic cable stub comprises:

a jacket comprising an outer surface and an inner surface, wherein the outer surface is an exterior surface of the cable and the inner surface defines an interior space of the fiber optic cable stub, and wherein the input optical fiber and the output optical fiber are disposed within the interior space, and wherein the jacket is extended through the opening of the housing.

16 . The network of claim 15 , wherein the input optical fiber is operably connected to the fiber optic distribution cable outside of the housing, and wherein the output optical fiber is operably coupled to the end user outside of the housing.

17 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body of the housing comprises a cylindrical, tube, or frusto-conical structure and an interior surface having a maximum radius between approximately 2 inches and approximately 4 inches, wherein the mount plate is affixed to the body within the plenum.

18 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the splice tray is positioned on the mount plate on a first side opposite of the signal splitter device positioned on a second side.

19 . The network of claim 13 , wherein the body of the housing comprises a cylindrical, tube, or frusto-conical structure and an interior surface having a maximum radius between approximately 2 inches and approximately 4 inches, wherein the mount plate is affixed to the body within the plenum.

20 . The network of claim 13 , the apparatus comprising:

a splice tray affixed to the mount plate, wherein the splice tray is positioned on the mount plate on a first side opposite of the signal splitter device positioned on a second side.
