Electronic document management system with a content status designation interface
The disclosure is directed to system that is configured to manage electronic content and, more specifically, provide a user interface for designating content status with respect to electronic content. The electronic content may be managed by a content collaboration system that manages and stores user-generated content in a series of related pages or documents. Content status may be designated using controls provided via a web-browser user interface and used for tracking and management of electronic content by individual users, which may allow for improved data preservation and more uniform content management.
1 . A method for operating a computer-generated interface for editing and viewing electronic page content in a content collaboration platform, the method comprising:
at a backend configured to provide page content of a page object stored in a content collaboration platform to a plurality of client devices, each client device operating a respective instance of a client application in a respective web browser, the page content of the page object accessible to each client device accessing the page object contemporaneously:
in response to a first request to view a published content of the page object at a first client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the first client device to enter into a view mode, the view mode displaying the published content and a first page status of the page object;
in response to a second request to edit the published content of the page object at a second client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the second client device to enter into an edit mode, the edit mode displaying the first page status and the published content;
receiving, from the second client device, a first selection of a content status option of the edit mode, the content status option selectable to cause a change in the first page status;
in response to the first selection of the content status option, cause display of a first window element including concurrent display of a text entry region configured to receive user-entered text and a list of selectable content item statuses;
in response to receiving the user-entered text in the text entry region, generate a new user-defined selectable content item status; and
in response to a user selection of a particular selectable content item status of the list of selectable content item statuses including the new user-defined selectable content item status, modify the first page status to obtain a second page status in accordance with the user selection of the particular selectable content item status;
in response to a third request to view the published content of the page object at the first client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the first client device to enter into the view mode, the view mode displaying the published content and the second page status;
receiving, from the first client device, a second selection of a content status control; and
in response to the second selection of the content status control, cause display of a second window element overlaying a first portion of the published content, the second window element comprising a page edit history.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the page object is a first page object and further comprising:
subsequent to receiving the user-entered text in the text entry region, updating a user-specific profile to include a new user-defined content status option corresponding to the new user-defined selectable content item status; and
in response to a user selecting a content status option of a second page object different from the first page object, cause display of the new user-defined selectable content item status.
3 . The method claim 1 , wherein:
the list of selectable content item statuses comprises:
a first set of selectable content item statuses determined in accordance with an administrator profile; and
a second set of selectable content item status determined in accordance with a user-specific profile.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first window element further comprises a selectable control configured to restrict a view of the particular selectable content item status to users outside an organization.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
in response to a hover input of the second page status, cause display of a content status window comprising a timestamp indicating a last content status change; and
in response to positioning a user cursor away from the second page status, suppress display of the content status.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:
The first window element comprises a color designation input;
in response to a user selection of the color designation input, provide a selectable color palette; and
in response to a user selection of a particular color of the selectable color palette, assign the particular color to the particular selectable content item status.
7 . A system for operating a computer-generated interface for editing and viewing electronic page content, the system comprising:
memory storing a backend application configured to provide page content of a content collaboration platform over a computer network to a plurality of client devices, each client device operating a web browser and the page content accessible to each client device accessing the page object contemporaneously; and
one or more processors operably coupled to the memory and when executing the backend application, cause the system to:
in response to a first request to view a published content of the page object at a first client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the first client device to enter into a view mode, the view mode displaying the published content and a first page status of the page object;
in response to a second request to edit a page at a first client device of the plurality of client devices:
cause the first client device to enter into an edit mode within a web browser of the first client device, the edit mode including published user-generated page content of the page;
cause display, over a designated region of the edit mode, of a first selectable graphical element configured to set a content status of the page;
in response to receiving a user selection of the first selectable graphical element, cause display of a status window, the status window including concurrent display of a list of selectable content item statuses and a text input region;
in response to a user text input comprising a user-generated status, generate a new user-defined selectable content item status;
in response to a user selection of a particular selectable content item status of the list of selectable content item statuses including the new user-defined selectable content item status, modify the status of the page to obtain a second page status in accordance with the user selection of the particular selectable content item status:
in response to a third request to view the page at a second client device of the plurality of client devices:
cause the second client device to enter into the view mode distinct from the edit mode within a web browser of the second client device, the view mode including the published user-generated page content and a second selectable graphical element comprising the second page status; and
in response to a selection of a second selectable element, cause display of a second window element overlaying a first portion of the published user-generated page content and comprising a page edit history.
8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the page edit history comprises a log of page status changes within a particular date range.
9 . The system of claim 7 , wherein
the list of selectable content statuses comprises:
a first set of selectable content item statuses determined in accordance with administrator profile; and
a second set of selectable content item statuses determined in accordance with a user-specific profile.
10 . The system of claim 7 , wherein:
the status window comprises a color designation input;
in response to a user selection of the color designation input, provide a selectable color palette; and
in response to a user selection of a particular color of the selectable color palette, assign the particular color to the user-generated status.
11 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the second selectable graphical element further comprises data for at least one user responsible for reviewing the published user-generated content of the page.
12 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:
determine that an amount of time from a previous modification of the status of the page exceeds a threshold;
identify that the status of the page corresponds to an early draft content status; and
cause display of a notification configured to cause a particular user to edit the status of the page.
13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the notification comprises selectable elements configured to automatically modify the status of the page in response to a user input.
14 . A method for displaying a content status in documents in a content collaboration platform, the method comprising:
at a backend configured to provide electronic content of a document object over a computer network to a plurality of client devices, each client device operating a respective instance of a client application via a web browser, the document object accessible contemporaneously to a plurality of users via the respective instances of the client application:
in response to a first request to view a published content of the document object at a first client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the first client device to enter into a view mode, the view mode displaying the published content and a first status of the document object;
in response to a second request to edit the published content of the document object at a second client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the second client device to enter into an edit mode of the client application, the edit mode displaying the first status and the published content;
in response to a user input at a designated region of the edit mode, the designated region associated with the first status, cause display of a window element that overlays at least a portion of the published content, the window element including concurrent display of a text entry region configured to receive user-entered text and a list of selectable content item statuses;
in response to receiving the user-entered text in the text entry region, generate a new user-defined selectable content item status;
in response to a user selection of a particular selectable content item status of the list of selectable content item statuses including the new user-defined selectable content item status, modify the first status to obtain a second status in accordance with the user selection of the particular selectable content item status;
in response to a third request to view the published content of the document object at the first client device of the plurality of client devices, causing the respective instance of the client application on the first client device to enter into the view mode, the view mode displaying the published content and the second status;
receiving, from the first client device, a second selection of a content status control; and
in response to the second selection of the content status control, cause display of a second window element overlaying a first portion of the published content, the second window element comprising a page edit history.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:
the window element further comprises a list of selectable content item statuses having:
a first set of selectable content item statuses determined in accordance with an administrator profile; and
a second set of selectable content item statuses determined in accordance with a user-specific profile.
16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein:
the window element comprises a color designation input;
in response to a user selection of the color designation input, provide a selectable color palette; and
in response to a user selection of a particular color of the selectable color palette, assign the particular color to the content status.
17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the document is a first document and further comprising:
subsequent to receiving the user-entered text in the text entry region, updating a user-specific profile to include a new user-defined content status option corresponding to the new user-defined selectable content item status; and
in response to a user selecting a content status option of a second document different from the first document, cause display of the user-defined selectable content item status.
18 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
in response to a hover input of the second status, cause display of a content status window comprising a timestamp indicating a last content status change; and
in response to positioning a user cursor away from the second status, suppress display of the timestamp indicating the last content status change.
19 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the window element further comprises prior user-generated status filtered by a time-based criteria.
